Welcome to the first RELAX magazine. We are proud of what we have to offer inside our book and look forward to welcoming you at the club to try our New American Night on Tuesday nights or joining you for a beer at one of our raffles. Please enjoy our articles in the magazine and lets all get behind our Commonwealth Games athlete Natasha Scott as she aims for gold at the coming 2018 Gold Coast games (Pg 7).

We have just ended our financial year and we are pleased with the results thus far. Like all businesses and homes, we have increased costs for electricity and cost of goods but we are holding firm and looking strong for the future.

On the bowls front, we have started the year with gusto. Our ladies have once again won the No 1 pennant, that makes it 9 years in a row and as I write this, our No 2 grade have also just won the pennant. We wish them luck at the Group Playoffs.

The men have dominated the Local scene. Titles include: • Winners of the District Pairs (Matt Baus and myself)• Runner up in the District Triples (Adrian Solomons, Shaun Richards and Haydn Bojkowski)• Winners of the Zone fours (Ian Lean, myself, Lennon Scott and Matt Baus)• Runner up in the district fours (Sean Cairns, Gary Randall, Haydn Bojkowski and Eric Ryan)• Winners of the District Junior Pairs (Zach Nicholls and Connor Freeman)• Runner up District Junior Pairs (Brendan Stokes)• Winners of the District Under 25 Pairs (Shaun Richards and Haydn Bojkowski)• Runner Up District under 25 Pairs (Kate Matthews and Lachlan Freeman)We wish them luck as they now compete at the State Championships in September.

If you have not had breakfast at The Rectory on a Saturday morning, let me recommend you get over there. Simone, Chris and the team will ensure that your morning is stress free and relaxing. I highly suggest you have a coffee and try the special. We are opening on a Sunday shortly, so keep your eyes out for that. If you can’t make it for breakfast, book in a High Tea or come try our new “High Coffee”.

If you think the club needs something new or you’re not happy with something we are doing, please feel free to pop me a line or come in and see me.

Chief Executive Officer Report

Your Board

Get to know your Director - Brad ReedWhat is the proudest moment in your life?Becoming a father to my 3 beautiful children. What are your goals on becoming a Board member of RTBC? To help the Club succeed. Some of my goals as a Board member are to help keep the Club financial, assist in strategic planning and being on track to achieve our goals that would be beneficial to our members.

What is your favourite drink?Depending on my preference at the time, either Tooheys Old or Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. What is your favourite meal? Mongolian Beef from the Club is the best anywhere or lobster mornay when I can get it. Who, growing up, did you see as a mentor and how did they impact your life?My father Norman Reed. Dad was very firm but fair and was always there for advice when required. Respect and earn respect will get you a long way in life. This is something that I have passed onto my kids. Tell us a bit about your working career up to this moment?I left school in 1975 and started work as an apprentice mechanic for Warrawong Tenpin Bowling Alley. It was by chance that I came across an Army display in the local shopping centre 2yrs later and decided that this was something I could see myself doing. A week after turning 17 I enlisted and became an APC driver in Armoured Corp. Following this I became interested in military law and after 3 months training became a Military Policeman until my discharge in 1983. Since then I’ve had numerous jobs: Lighting Technician for a band, Australia Post, Limo Driver, Plumbing Industry, Motorcycle Riding Instructor and then Manager of a Self Storage Facility. I retired in Feb 2017. Where would you like to see the Club in 40 years? To still being successful in lawn bowls and a Club where the community are proud to call their own and proud of its history and development over the years. Do you play Bowls?I’ve been playing bowls now for 6 years and love it. Who is your favourite player you play with and against and why? This is a hard one due to the small amount of time I’ve been playing. I would have to say my son Josh with whom I had won the Club Minor pairs and against would have to be Lee Such as he has never beaten me...

Who is your favourite band and song?Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood & Pink Floyd - Wish you were here. What is your favourite type of food? I love my seafood. Lobster, Mud Crabs and Prawns. Where in the world would you like to travel and why?I would love to finish seeing the rest of Australia then Northern England and Scotland to look at where our family history had started. How did you meet your beautiful wife?Would you believe on an end of season footy trip to Nelson Bay. She walked into the Seabreeze Hotel with her sister. I passed on my details and told her she was the most beautiful woman to walk into the place then left. I was back to see her again the following week.

What made you start playing lawn bowls?I started when I was 15 from school sport. I never was an academic and would rather be at home so I come to an agreement with my parents that I would attend school sport and they would pick me up from there. I chose Raymond Terrace Bowling Club because it had the best hot chips in town and Lawn Bowls was the least strenuous out of all the sports on offer. I decided to play a couple of ends one day and I guess you could say the rest is history.

What is you biggest achievement in the game?Winning the 2017 Grand Slam at State level (Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours) and winning 3 World titles in the 1 year (World Champion of Champion Singles, World Championship Triples and World Championship Fours).

After the disappointment at the last 2 Commonwealth Games, what are your goals for the 2018 Games?I have always been one for setting realistic goals. As easy as it is to say I would like 2 Gold Medals in the disciplines I have been selected in, I would prefer to say I would be stoked with any colour Medal as long as I can look at my team mates in the eyes at the end of the tournament and say I did everything possible.

What position/discipline are you playing in at the Games?During the first week I will be competing in the Women’s Fours alongside Kelsey Cottrell, Carla Krizanic and Rebecca Van Asch and during the second week it will be the Women’s Triples alongside Carla Krizanic and Rebecca Van Asch. I will Skip the Fours and play Second in the Triples.

How are preparations for you and the rest of the team going? The preparations are in full swing for myself and the Jackaroos with a full squad camp scheduled for every month and plenty of practice at our own Clubs. We have also organised to play in as many local tournaments as possible in our desired disciplines to get as much practice as possible. We would love to have a little more time on the green at Broadbeach but this is restricted due to the closing of the Greens 3 weeks prior to the Games starting. But as they say any practice is better than no practice.

With the Games taking place on the Gold Coast what advantages do you think that offers you and the Jackaroos? The advantages certainly outweigh the disadvantages. Being able to practice for the months prior to the Games on the Greens is the biggest advantage. By the time the Games come around we should know the greens and the individual rinks like the back of our hands BUT the disadvantage is the high pressure from the locals. Another advantage is plenty of training with our team mates so we get to know their style of play well and are able to play with them confident on the day.

What was it like participating in Delhi and Glasgow? Both Games were completely different to each other. Delhi was played on a carpet style Green which was very heavy due to the humidity. The village in Delhi was like living in a cement box.

Natasha Scott and the Commonwealth Games

A lot of stadiums were incomplete and the security was extremely high with guards holding AK47 guns on buses and routes to every venue. Glasgow was a great experience especially getting to play at the most picturesque venue. The village was very well prepared and all the venues were complete. Glasgow saw a lot of spectators compared to Delhi so it was certainly a different atmosphere.

This will be your 3rd Commonwealth Games. What does it take to make it a great Games for the Athletes and especially the Bowlers? The main aspect that will make it a great games for the Athletes is it being in our own country as well as the crowds. I really think the crowds will be huge which will be great for the Australians. We play to a crowd.

What advice do you have for any aspiring Bowlers?Believe in yourself and if you have any dreams make sure you chase them. Nothing is impossible! Also remember practice makes perfect.

What does it mean to be representing your country at such a prestigious event? The Commonwealth Games is the highest representative competition in Bowls, so to represent Australia in a sport I love means the world. If somebody had’ve asked me when I first started what I wanted to achieve it was definitely a Gold Medal at a Commonwealth Games and to have 3 opportunities is a dream come true, let’s just hope that 3rd time is lucky and I would be happy with any medal.Tash xo

Well it is that time of the year again!! I hope that every one of you had a Merry Christmas and I wish you all best in this New Year. Welcome to another season of Bowls at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club. Our success in the Junior, Men’s and Ladies ranks in recent times certainly bodes well for further success on the greens in 2018. Men’s and Ladies Club Championships are in full swing and the Ladies Pennant Competition started on the 30th January. The Ladies have yet again fielded 2 Grades consisting of some well-known members as well as some friendly new faces. We have Grades 1 and 2 and are looking forward to defending our 1 Grade Flag from 2017 and hopefully adding a 2 Grade Flag to the Club’s list of Pennant achievements. With the number of participating Clubs dropping, we will only see a short season for the 1’s with 6 games to be played. This season sees some strong, competitive Clubs contesting the 1 Grade. Kotara, Stockton and a well-oiled team from Soldiers Point will all be seeking 1 Grade glory. In the 2’s there are 2 sections with Raymond Terrace battling it out against Soldiers Point Yellow, Alder Park and 2017 Runners Up New Lambton.

The Men’s Pennant season is quickly approaching. Due to the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, this year will see a move away from the dates that Pennants and NDBA Championships have traditionally been played. Saturday Pennants will start on the 28th April while Midweek will start on the 4th April. You will also find that most NDBA Championships are scheduled for play on the weekends between the Australia Day weekend and the weekend that Pennants starts. I am sure that you will agree that this is quite a significant change, and if my little birds are chirping any truth, I can just about assure you all, that it is set to remain this way into the foreseeable future. There are positives and negatives on each side of the argument, the main negative being the ability to schedule Pennant

Trials. Consequently most trials will be in-house and any trials organised between Clubs will most likely be midweek. However one major positive is that the days of yawning chasms of time between District Pennants concluding and State Pennants commencing appears to be a thing of the past. There is now only 3 weeks between the two which means that any team lucky enough to reach the State Pennant Finals should be well prepared.

Which brings me to preparing for this year at our Club. Over recent years we have been very successful in both Midweek and Saturday Pennants having won a number of Flags across varying Grades. I put this down to preparation. The teams that have been lucky enough to claim the ultimate prize have largely been made up of people that made the extra effort in their preparation. The Bowls Team have been running Pre-Season Training/Coaching arvos for a number of years leading into the Pennant Season, and I can tell you right now, the players that have attended and actually taken something away from these sessions are the very same players getting their photo taken with a Flag at the end of the season. Keep your eye on the Bowls Board for this year’s dates!

I would like to welcome some new and returning faces to Raymond Terrace Bowling Club for the upcoming season. I am sure that they will make a worthy contribution to our Club’s Pennant prospects and hope they enjoy their year at the “HANGAR”. However, I encourage all of our Bowling Members to make themselves available for Pennants. Last year we had 7 Grades competing on Saturdays, 4 Grades Midweek and 3 Pennant Flags at the end of the season. Whether it is as a spare or a fulltime player we should all try to play our part to see this great Club of ours continue its success and strive for dominance. GO THE JETS!
