Other Rebar Continuity SystemsAncon manufactures other reinforcement continuitysystems for use when bar diameters exceed 16mm,lap lengths do not fit within an Eazistrip box and on-site bar straightening is keen to be avoided.

KSN Anchor SystemHere, Ancon KSN threaded anchors are suppliedfixed to a timber carrier and used in conjunctionwith Bartec parallel threaded reinforcing bars. There is no on site bar straightening and virtuallyno restriction on bar length, so EC2 lap lengths areeasily accommodated.

Starter Bar SystemThis system consists of a Starter Bar which issupplied fixed to an Ancon tapered thread couplerto accept a tapered threaded continuation bar.The Starter Bar can also be supplied with anAncon Parallel Thread Adaptor which accepts astandard metric bolt or studding. The standardrange suits bar diameters up to 32mm.

Ancon designs and manufactures high integrity steel products for

the construction industry. Through continuous programmes of

new product development, inward investment and employee

advancement, the company is committed to maintaining the

highest level of customer service within a dynamic and

challenging industry.

The use of reinforcement continuity systemsis a widely accepted means of providingcontinuity of reinforcement across constructionjoints in concrete. The Eazistrip systemcomprises a galvanised steel casing whichhouses pre-bent bars. The unit is cast into theface of a concrete wall and the bars arestraightened, ready for lapping when required.

EAZISTRIP REINFORCEMENTCONTINUITY SYSTEMS

The Eazistrip Reinforcement Continuity Systemis a quick and easy to install method ofmaintaining continuity of reinforcement atconstruction joints in concrete. It consists ofa galvanised steel casing with a dimpledsurface to provide an effective concrete bond.Pre-bent bars are housed within the casingand are enclosed by a protective cover. Each end of the unit is sealed with apolystyrene block in order to prevent theingress of concrete.

The complete unit is nailed to the formwork.Alternatively it can be wired back to the mainreinforcement cage. The concrete is then cast. After striking the formwork, the cover isremoved and the bars are straightened, readyfor lapping onto the main reinforcement, usingan Eazistrip re-bending tool.

The steel casing remains embedded in the walland is filled with concrete when the nextsection is poured, the dimpled surfaceproviding an efficient key.

Use of the Eazistrip system offers manybenefits over conventional joint construction, including the simplification of formwork designand removal of the need to drill shuttering. This contributes to the acceleration of theconstruction process. As the bars remainenclosed within the casing until required, theyare protected and the risk of injury fromprojecting bars is minimised. Easy to use, thesystem requires little on site training in order tocarry out installation.

Ancon Eazistrip is approved by UK CARES.

The Eazistrip system is potentially suitable foruse in any construction joint in concrete, butthe most commonly found applications include:

• Floor slabs

• Walls

• Stairwells

• Corbels

• Diaphragm walls

• Jumpforms

• Brick support ledges

EAZISTRIP COVERSAncon is phasing out the use of steelcovers on Eazistrip systems, replacingthem with a heavy duty plasticisedcardboard alternative. User feedbacksuggests these covers are quicker andsafer to remove than those manufacturedfrom steel.

Currently all 10mm and 12mm systemsare supplied with a cardboard cover. The16mm system will be supplied with steelcovers in the short term, however shouldyou require this system with a cardboardcover please advise Ancon at the time ofordering.

QUALITY ASSURANCEEazistrip Reinforcement Continuity Systems aremanufactured using CARES approved bar. Thetype of reinforcement is selected by AnconBuilding Products to provide a suitable degreeof ductility, ensuring that it complies with thetensile requirements of BS4449: 2005 GradeB500C after prefabrication and re-bending onsite. The bars are bent in accordance withBS8666: 2005.

It is the designer’s responsibility to ensurereinforcement is adequately designed inaccordance with the code and detailed toensure anchorages and bearing stresses areappropriate. Ancon Building Products is a BSEN ISO 9001 registered company.

Eazistrip Reinforcement Continuity Systems aresuitable for use with designs undertaken inaccordance with BS EN 1992-1-1: 2004(Eurocode 2) and BS 8110-1: 1997.

Nail the Eazistrip through the casing to theformwork or alternatively securely tie theprojecting anchorage reinforcing bars back tothe main reinforcement. In both cases theEazistrip box should be securely fixed to avoiddisplacement during concreting. The casingshould be tight against the formwork. Pourconcrete.

Strike the formwork to reveal the cover.

Remove the cover to expose thepre-bent bars.

Straighten the bars using the appropriate sizedAncon Eazistrip re-bending tool for the size ofbar. The bars should be straightened onlyonce. To avoid damage to adjacent concrete,it is prudent to allow a concrete curing periodof seven days. See ‘Bar Straightening’ formore information.

Once the bars are straightened and alignedthey are ready for lapping with the concreteelement reinforcement, provided by others.

INSTALLATION BAR STRAIGHTENINGThe bars in the Eazistrip box must bestraightened using the appropriate sizedAncon Eazistrip re-bending tool. This is a steeltube designed to fit over the bar, the internaldiameter being slightly larger than themaximum dimension over the ribs of the bar.One end of the tube has a section cut away;this provides support to the outside of thebend during straightening of the bar and limitsthe point contact of the tube on the bar.

Use of the tool allows the re-bending processto be carried out in a smooth continuousaction (avoiding jerky action), the tube beingmoved along the bar and around the bend asit is straightened. Scaffold tubes or similarmust not be used to straighten bar.

To enable the re-bending tool to be fitted ontothe bar, the bar should be pulled the minimumdistance from the Eazistrip steel casing toenable this. The re-bending tool should thenbe slid along the bar to the start of the bendradius.

The bar straightening process should besmooth and progressive with the tube allowedto move along the bend towards the metalcasing as it is straightened. The tool shouldcontact the Eazistrip steel casing at thecompletion of the straightening process.

The tube is then removed and the straightenedbar checked for alignment and cover with theadjoining reinforcement.

The Eazistrip reinforcing bars should not bestraightened when the temperature of the steelis below 5°C. Where straightening is necessarybelow 5°C, indirect warming of the steel to atemperature not exceeding 100°C is permitted.

The use of scaffold tubes, or otherinappropriate tools will result in excessive kinksin the region of the bar bend and result inundesirable work hardening which maydamage the bar and affect the strength of thebar. Re-bending must be undertaken usingonly the Ancon Eazistrip re-bending tool.Bending the bar in excess of therecommendations will also result in workhardening of the rebar and should therefore beavoided.

Identify the location of the intended cut.

ON-SITE CUTTING

1

Slide the protective cover from the box and remove the bars which pass over the cut location.

2

Cut through the steel casing using a disc cutter.

3

Replace the bars to face the opposite direction to their original position. Cut the cover to the samelengths as the steel casing and replace to protect the bars. The ends of the boxes must besealed, using polystyrene blocks, to prevent the ingress of concrete.

Note: Protective gloves should be worn when removing covers, straightening bars, cutting boxes and duringgeneral handling of Eazistrip.

OTHER ANCON PRODUCTS

Reinforcing Bar CouplersThe use of reinforcing bar couplers canprovide significant advantages over lappedjoints. Design and construction of the concretecan be simplified and the amount ofreinforcement required can be reduced. The Ancon range includes parallel-threaded,tapered-threaded and mechanically boltedcouplers.

Shear Load ConnectorsAncon DSD Shear Load Connectors are usedto transfer shear across expansion andcontraction joints in concrete. They are moreeffective at transferring load and allowingmovement to take place than plain dowels, andcan be used to eliminate double columns atstructural movement joints in buildings.

Channel and Bolt FixingsAncon offers a wide range of channels andbolts in order to fix stainless steel masonrysupport, restraints and windposts to structuralframes. Cast-in channels and expansion boltsare used for fixing to the edges of concretefloors and beams.

Insulated Balcony ConnectionsAncon Isolan connectors join external concretebalconies to internal concrete floor slabs.Used to minimise cold bridging, they providecontinuity to the thermal insulation. Standardsystems, comprising rigid CFC-free polystyreneinsulation and duplex stainless steel shearreinforcement, suit most depths of cantileveredand simply supported balconies. Conventionalreinforcing bars are used to provide the tensionand compression reinforcement.

Punching Shear ReinforcementAncon Shearfix is used within a slab to provideadditional reinforcement from punching sheararound columns. The system consists ofdouble-headed steel studs welded to flat railsand is designed to suit the load conditions andslab depth at each column using freecalculation software from Ancon.

Special Stainless Steel FabricationsAncon has a wealth of experience in workingwith different types and grades of stainlesssteel. Advanced manufacturing facilities enableone-off or volume orders to be fabricated toindividual project requirements and to exactingquality standards. Considerable materialstocks are maintained in order to meet urgentdelivery deadlines.

EAZISTRIP WATER STOP

Where the potential for water ingress throughthe construction joint is a major concern,Eazistrip can be supplied with a Pentaflexhydrostatic seal. The seal is factory fitted insideand outside the box to provide double-sidedprotection against water or moisturepermeation along the joint face.

As Pentaflex is a hydrostatic seal, it is notreliant on expansion, unlike hydrophilic typeseals, and it provides a continuous elastic sealby means of the bond between the Pentaflexand the fresh concrete. Resistant to organicwaste water, Pentaflex has been tested by theHygiene-Institut, Geisenkirchen, Germany foruse with potable water.

A protective film on the Pentaflex preventscontamination by dust or dirt during storage, handling and installation. The film must beremoved prior to concreting. When installingand abutting boxes, joints are achieved bypressing together a 50mm overlap of thePentaflex material, to ensure continuousprotection against water permeation.
