The Crystal Club Foundation

• The Crystal Club Foundation is a non-profit watershed group

dedicated to improving water quality in Crystal Lake, a tributary of the

Eastern Branch of the Lynnhaven River.

• The club was founded in 2008 by James Reidy and Jason Barney, long

time residents of Virginia Beach who live in the watershed and are

active in local environmental issues.

• The club is working on numerous projects in the watershed; including

partnership with the city of Virginia Beach on several initiatives,

promoting community education in the watershed, and conducting

environmental restoration projects.

Oyster Reef Restoration

• A primary goal of the Club is to conduct oyster reef restoration within

Crystal Lake and Rainey’s Gut.

• We are building reefs made of oyster shell in order to promote native

oyster growth. Our objective is to restore a healthy oyster population

in the lake, which will help to improve water quality and aquatic

habitat in the lake and surrounding waters.

• The Club partnered with James Wesson, Director of Conservation and

Replenishment for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, to

acquire the oyster shell for the reef.

• Barney Environmental, Inc., a Virginia Beach environmental

consulting firm, conducted the design and permitting for the project.

Hydraulic pressure was used to wash the shells off of the barge and

into place.

Future Reef Restoration

• We will expand the Rainey’s Gut reef next year.

• We are partnering with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to seed our new reefs with live oysters.

• We will conduct monitoring of the reefs to measure oyster growth and other environmental parameters.

• Our goal is to promote and facilitate future reef restoration and construction projects along other waterfront areas of Crystal Lake and surrounding waters.

Thank you for your time,
