DeKalb Medical at North Decatur

DeKalb Medical at North Decatur is a 451-licensed bed, full service not-for-profit hospital. The campus features the latest in diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Axial Tomography (CT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), da Vinci robotic surgery, Computerized Physician Order Entry system (CPOE), Diagnostic Cardiac Catherterization Laboratory, Digital Mamography, Linear Accelerator for cancer treatment, and lithotripsy. DeKalb Medical at North Decatur’s emergency department serves over 75,000 patients each year.

DeKalb Medical’s Dr.Bobbie Bailey Tower opened in 2007 and contains the maternity services for the DeKalb system and delivers approximately 6,000 babies each year. The tower also contains the pre-and post surgical services for the North Decatur campus.

DeKalb Medical at North Decatur also provides Joint Replacement Center for hip and knee replacement surgery and recovery. The Heart and Vascular Center in the hospital provides an Endovascular Surgery Laboratory as well as the Cardiac Catherterization Laboratory.

The Charles B. Eberhart Cancer Center is a American College of Surgeons Center of Excellence and provides diagnostic and therapeutic services including spiritual and family support groups. The Cancer Center also incorporates a Nurse Navigator to help breast cancer patients preview options and begin treatment in a timely manner.

DeKalb Medical Long Term Acute Care at Downtown Decatur (LTAC)

This 40-bed hospital is designed for medically complex patients who are diagnosed with respiratory conditions, severe wounds, infections and more. Specializing in ventilator and tracheostomy weaning, the LTAC team is led by board-certified pulmonologists and provides intensive nursing and respiratory care that produces effective outcomes for high acuity patients. LTAC’s return to home rate is 40%- twice the national average according to Joint Commission ORYX indicators. We are also the only U.S. hospital to ever receive Joint Commission Disease Specific certification for the treatment of patients who are diagnosed with respiratory failure and ventilator dependence.

A nurse specialist who, working directly with referring physicians, can answer patients’ questions and guide them from initial diagnosis of a breast problem through treatment.

Free services include assessment of eligibility for genetic testing, insurance precertification for lab costs, education to obtain written informed consent and oncology referral services. Genetic testing lab costs do apply. Patients are sent back to referring physician for follow up.

Participation in national cancer trials as well as access to the latest scientific advances in cancer treatment.

Certified oncology nurses administer chemotherapy, osteoporosis treatments and blood products, monitor lab values. Oncologists, hematologists and pulmonologists available.

External beam radiotherapy, 3-D conformal therapy, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), brachytherapy, radioimmunotherapy and MammoSite®. Coming in April 2010: Rapid ARC and On Board Imaging (OBI) with Image Guided Radiation Therapy.

Free class available to any individual with a cancer diagnosis who has completed all treatment; designed to help patients regain strength, flexibility and stamina and to help them cope with lingering side effects of treatment; led by a specially trained physical therapist and geared towards patients’ individual needs.
