There are over 20 million performers in almost 300 member festivals across the UK, Ireland and beyond including France, Gibraltar, Italy, Hong Kong, Malta, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka and Trinidad & Tobago. Some festivals have a wide range of music, speech and dance classes, whilst others are more specialist. Festivals offer a platform for performance, the opportunity to hear the work of others and the chance to receive feedback from a professional adjudicator.The Federation of Festivals is the membership body for all festivals that provide opportunities for amateur performers and to the professional adjudicators / accompanists that work with our festivals. We support the festival movement by providing information, support, advice and essential services to our members.

A Federation festival provides many things: the stimulus of preparing for a public occasion: the opportunity to hear the work of others; the chance to receive advice from a professional perfomer that a young amateur may never meet in any other way. Here, the size of our festival movement is of paramount importance: most performers have at least six festivals within their reach and this brings the added stimulus of preparing for deadlines and the necessity to greatly increase repertoire.

Festivals bring forward the specially gifted: many famous names found their first platform at their local festival and, happily, some have never forgotten that and give the festival movement staunch support year on year. But, even more importantly, festivals develop transferable skills that performers will use throughout their lives from their job interview onwards. Most will not make their career in the arts but will become that educated audience who will keep the arts alive in the 21st century.

We've had three very successful Festivals for Dance, Speech and Music and I thank everyone concerned for their efforts to make it so. Although this year we've changed the Music and Dance months to enable more performers to compete, I believe we've provided everyone a great opportunity to participate in such a wonderful event. God bless all these exciting young people and may the Festival movement grow not only in Sri Lanka but in the UK and in all the places of the world where the BIFF members hold their annual programmes .

There is always a frisson of excitement when your aircraft alights at Bandaranaike Aiport, Colombo and the realization that you are about to spend several weeks on this enchanting island dawns. Even after thirty eight visits the feeling is ever present.The British Lanka Festival for the Performing Arts,under the guidance of Kamini Perara has contributed much to the cultural climate of the country .Since its inauguration it has fostered not only performance skills,but it has built confidence, poise and further appreciation of language and literature. It is both a privilege and pleasure to assess and adjudicate the very creative work of the young participants and to travel the length and breadth of this lovely country to which I always hope to return. I consider myself very lucky to have been invited back to the Finals in 2018 and I had a very good time in Colombo alongside my fellow adjudicators Mr Thrupp and Mr Prince. I saw some excellent work from all over the Island and, yet again, I am left wondering where those teachers find the time and energy to train all their students to participate in this Festival. The support from the families and friends is amazing with some very long arduous journeys being made. But we must always remember that the performers themselves have also made a long journey to reach the finals, and I hope that they do not view this achievement as the end of the journey but as a "breathing space" before they continue, because, these skills that they are acquiring will serve them well when they enter their workplace. Good luck to you all in 2019 and thank you to the organizers who make this all possible.

The British Lanka Festival for the Performing Arts is a very well established performance opportunity for all the musicians, dancers and speakers of Sri Lanka.

The festival affords everyone the opportunity to develop not only their specific performance skills but also their personal confidence when working under pressure. The greatest benefit a festival offers is the immediate feedback – both written and verbal - given to every performer. The highly experienced and independent adjudicators who are engaged are there to listen attentively, kindly and critically to every performance, be it from a novice or experienced performer.

It takes many years of experience in performance to maximise the ability to work under pressure. Each performance we give teaches us something new about ourselves. It might be about becoming more self-critical about our own levels of preparation, reacting to new performance conditions, accepting sincerely given advice from an independent professional, or hearing another performer doing the very things you aspire to! These can all be inspirational lessons if accepted in the right spirit.

REGULATIONS & CONDITIONS

Submission of an Entry implies agreement by the Teacher/ Performer/ Parent to abide by ALL THE RULES & REGULATIONS OF THIS FESTIVAL. The decision of the Adjudicator and the Organising Director shall in all cases be FINAL. No correspondence will be entertained thereafter. Any form of communication by or on behalf of the competitor with an Adjudicator will render the competitor liable to disqualification.

Any breach of these rules and regulations will render the Performer liable to disqualification or to forfeit the award.

In the event the Festival is cancelled due to circumstances beyond the control of the organizers, the Entry Fee will be retained for the next year. Once paid and entered a performer’s entry fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.

The organizers reserve the right to substitute or appoint another adjudicator if any unforeseen contingency arises.

1. ENTRIES 1.1. Entries should be written on the official Entry Forms. All information in

the entry form should be written/typed clearly in BLOCK LETTERS with the correct spelling of the names of the candidates.

1.2. Full Entry Fees should be paid to the bank.The Bank Slip together with theentry form(s) for each catergory must be posted or delivered to the BLFPA before the specified closing date.

1.3. A minimum courier charge of 250/- must be paid together with the total entry.

MONEY ORDERS/POSTAL ORDERS/CHEQUES OR CASH WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

THE BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER AND ACCOUNT NAME AS WELL AS THE NAME OF THE TEACHER MUST BE CLEARLY WRITTEN ON THE BANK SLIP.

1.4. Separate entry forms should be filled in respect of each category. Entry forms may be photocopied.Only the official BLFPA entry form will be accepted. Teacher’s/ Participant’s/ Parent’s e-mail address must be included in the entry form.

1.5. Enter students to represent one centre only.

Do not enter a student for the same catergory e.g: In VERSE SPEAKING OWN CHOICE – SOLO under same class from the same or different centre. Do not enter a student for different classes in the same category or from different centres.

1.6. A participant may enter for a higher age group than his/her age but

not for a lower age group.

1.7. Photocopies of entries MUST be taken by the teacher before handing the entries to the office. Any errors or omissions may in this way be checked or corrected.

1.8. The Teacher/ Parent/ Participant MUST BE CONTACTABLE AT ALL TIMES. Please make sure that relevant telephone numbers – residence, office, mobile, relative’s or friend’s, should be given. The Organisers cannot take the responsibility of communicating any urgent/unforeseen changes to the participants without them.

1.9. No changes will be accepted over the phone or verbally. Only written or fax/e-mail instructions addressed to the Organizing Director will be attended to.

1.10. A fee will be charged for any alteration in the name(s) of a

candidate(s), AFTER the certificate(s) has/have been printed. This should be done within two weeks from the date of receiving the certificate.

1.11. Refunds: Entry Fees will not be refunded nor held to the credit of the Participant for the following year.

1.12. Substitution: For any reason is not allowed. The new candidate must enter as a new entry with FULL PAYMENT.

2. AGE LIMITS Will be calculated as at 31st December, 2019

3. CENTRES 3.1 A minimum number of 60 items must be entred for the centre to be held in the same area. Any number less than 60 would be recognised as a seperate centre but must perform at the closest venue in which the competition will be held.

4. NUMBER CARDS & LETTERS

4.1. Please call office on or after 16thApril 2019 with regard to the collection of number cards for the Speech Festival.

4.2. Please call office on or after 15th August 2018, with regard to the collection of number cards for the Music Festival.

4.3. Please call office on or after 15th October 2018, with regard to the

collection of number cards for the Dance Festival.

4.4. Number Cards and letters must be collected from the office by producing the receipt of payment.

4.5. If a written request is made on submission of the entries the Number cards & letters will be couriered. Courier charges must be paid by the teacher/parent/participant.

4.6. Please double check the entries onreceiving the number cards. Any omissions or errors in the number card should be brought to the notice of the organisers as soon as possible. No changes will be made at the centre or two weeks prior to the scheduled date.

4.7. A Duplicate Number Card will be issued only on a written request by

the teacher stating the reason for the loss, before the commencement of the Festival. These will be issued from the BLFPA office only and must be collected, they will not be sent through post or courier.

5. ABSENCE / LATE / SCHEDULING

Performers must be present 30 MINUTES before the scheduled time with the NUMBER CARD pinned to her/his dress/suit. Sessions start on time and performers may miss their chance if they are not ready to perform.

Preliminary - Latecomers may perform but lose the chance to compete at the finals once the judging for a class has been completed Finals - latecomers will not be able to compete once the judging for a class has been completed. There will be NO RESCHEDULING of performers who are absent or late. Dates for festival Performance cannot be requested or changed. Dates set by the BLFPA will be final.

6. COSTUMES / DRESS CODE / PROPS

6.1 Suitable costumes are allowed for Drama – solo/duo/group. For MIME it is necessary for the performer to be in FULL BLACK (not costume) without makeup. White gloves are not allowed.

6.2 Western & Oriental, National & Folk dance costumes are neded. (essential)

6.3 Slippers, Shorts & Caps are not allowed in performance other than those requiring costumes. Smart Casual clothing is appropriate.

6.4 Flame (fire/candle light),water – liquid of any types, Rigiform Confetti, Confetti, Real Food, Sharp Instruments can not be use for Speech & Drama / Music / Dance Festivals.

6.5 Assistants/ Parents setting up props on stage must be dressed in black.

6. MUSIC & BACKING TRACKS FOR SPEECH FESTIVAL Music & backing tracks will only be allowed for Group Drama & Group Verse Speaking in Speech Festival. It is not allowed for Mime, Solo/Duo/Trio items of ANY OTHER CLASS.

7. INSTRUMENTS

During the Music Festival there will only be a PIANO at certain venues. The performer must bring any other instrument/necessary.

8. RECORDED MUSIC/ ACCOMPANIST

Performers must bring their own Tape or CD player with the music, set at the correct place. A responsible person able to operate the Player must accompany the performer as the Organisers will not undertake this responsibility.Tapes/CD’s must be set and tested before a performance and cannot be tested or set up once the performance is due to start on stage. The person in charge of the music or the accompanist will not receive a certificate or medal but he/she may enter the hall free of charge.

9. All vocals must be sung from memory. Microphones cannot be used.

If any own choice Piece of music requires accompaniment the performer must have an accompanist with him/her for the performance.Backing tracks used as accompaniment for vocals should NOT have any singing.

10. FINALS All performers will perform the same piece as presented at preliminaries if chosen for the finals for Speech & Drama, Music & Dance. A printout for the Adjudicator is not needed at the finals.

11. TIME LIMITS Time Limits will be strictly adhered to. The performer’s marks will be deducted if the performance is over the time limit specified in the syllabus. Timing will be done from the first note or word spoken or played or movement of the dance. Timing will be checked at preliminaries and finals.

12. SET WORK Set work for Verse Speaking, Prose Reading, Piano &Vocals are available at the office.

13. MUSIC/SPEECH OWN CHOICE CLASSES A neatly printed copy of the own choice poem/ prose, drama or music and the words & music of the song must be given to the adjudicator at the venue for the Preliminaries. NOTE: It will not be returned to the participant. The performer’s name, class (eg: VSO 1) and index number must be printed on the top of the print out.

DO NOT USE SET WORK PIECES FOR OWN CHOICE. The performer is automatically disqualified if SET WORK is used for OWN CHOICE or vice versa.

DONOT bring a printout of the SET WORK for POEMS/ MUSIC/VOCALS

All Eastern music should be provided with Western Music Notations for the Adjudicator. Any problem with this should be notified in advance to the BLFPA. A short introduction to an Eastern performance must be given before the commencement of the program. The meaning/ mood or words of the Eastern song in English must be submitted to the Adjudicator.

14. MARKING SCHEME Adjudicators will mark according to the International Descriptors provided by the British & International Federation of Festivals for Music Dance & Speech UK.

All candidates will receive a certificate awarded as follows.

90 & over - HONOURS

An exceptional performance, both technically &

Artistically

87 - 89 - DISTINCTION

An Excellent performance, technically & artistically

84 – 86 - COMMENDATION

A convincing performance, technically & artistically

81 – 83 - MERIT

A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation

and/ or technical ability

78 – 80 - CREDIT

A performance showing development of technique and/

or communication

75 – 77 - PARTICIPATION

A limited performance in its communication.

15. AWARDS

a. PERFORMER’S AWARDS i. AT THE PRELIMINARY ROUNDS

Special Gold, Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals will be awarded at each centre in every age group and discipline. Certificates will be awarded to all performers receiving above 75 marks.

AT THE FINALS

The All Island Winner in every class will receive a Special Medal & Certificate at the Finals in Colombo.

The other performers will receive a Finalist certificate.

The most outstanding will be chosen by the adjudicators at the All Island Finals to compete for the Best Performance Competition in Colombo.

ii. AT THE BEST PERFORMANCE

The Best Performance Winner will receive a Cash Award for the Speech & Drama, Music Festival.

Special Awards of Trophies and Shields will be awarded.

The Best Performance Outstation Winner will receive a Cash Award for the Speech & Drama, Music Festival.

All Island Special Awards of Trophies & Shields won at the Festival each year must be returned to the office, in Perferct condition.

b. TEACHER`S AWARDS

i. Highest Number of Entries The Highest number of entries given by a single teacher in each centre will receive a certificate (Minimum 20 entries)

ii. Highest Number of Gold Medalists Ateacher receiving the highest number of Gold medalists in each centre will receive a certificate. A combination of two or more participants in a performance will be considered as one medal. (Minimum 5 Gold medalists)

iii. Highest Number of All Island Finalists The teacher receiving the highest number of All Island Finalists will receive a certificate. A combination of two or more participants in a performance will be considered as one Finalist.

iv. Highest Number of All Island Winners The teacher receiving the highest number of All Island Winners will receive a certificate. A combination of two or more participants in a performance will be considered as one Winner.

16. PHOTOGRAPHY/ VIDEO/ AUDIO RECORDING

In all Centres is NOT ALLOWED! NO ONE is allowed to photograph performers while they are on stage. This is in compliance with the International Child Protection Law.

No individual Photographs will be taken for groups with the Adjudicator. Please note no extra photographs will be taken other than the award winners with the Chief Guest at the Best Performance Ceremony.

17. ENTRANCE a. PARENTS & WELLWISHERS

Should obtain entry to the auditorium by paying Rs. 200/- per head which is valid for that particular day for all sessions.

No Free pass will be issued for Finals. Admission will be by programme at Rs. 250/- per head.

Free entrance for all at the Best Performance.

b. ACCOMPANISTS

An entry fee will not be charged for accompanists, but they must enter the auditorium with the participant.

c. TEACHERS

A special pass will be issued to teachers which can be used for preliminary, final, and best performance. Without a pass a programme will have to be purchased. It is essential to wear this pass to enter the auditorium and when inside the auditorium.

We will be grateful if this rule is adhered to as entrance will not be allowed only on recognition of a person.

Request for an Extra Teacher’s Pass should be made in writing along with the submission of Entries. Failing which no extra pass will be issued under any circumstances.

The STSD, Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama, is the UK’s professional membership organisation for qualified and trainee teachers of Speech and Drama, supporting and representing our members around the world.

As a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 1914, we were formed to encourage and promote the highest standards of teaching within the Speech and Drama field, to connect teachers of communication, performance and life skills and to act as a voice of the profession.

Soon after the Second World War the STSD became what it is today, from the amalgamation of two much earlier Associations formed to protect the professional interests of qualified, specialist teachers of Speech and Drama, to encourage the highest standards of teaching and to promote the study and knowledge of Speech and Dramatic Art in every form.

European Piano Teachers Association – is one of the most prestigious

Organizations with 38 National Associations in Europe. Every Association

organises its own congresses, workshops, seminars, recitals, masterclasses and is

committed to present Young Artists Platforms, Competitions and European

Young Artists festivals. An Annual Conference of all EPTA ASSOCIATIONS

is held every year in a different country under the Presidency of the Host

Association.

EPTA’s AIMS are:
