What is the GII Initiative?
“Developing global acumen through problem solving on world issues.” In our global economy, it is becoming increasingly important for students to learn about the world and to think in a global context. This cutting edge program provides students with the tools, knowledge, and guidance to develop innovative solutions to complex world issues. Over the course of the year, students gain exposure to leading global experts, develop complex problem-‐solving skills and deliver pitches to a panel of distinguished experts. Students receive guidance from University of Toronto experts, community and graduate-‐level mentors during this year long learning process. . Now entering its sixth year, the Global Ideas Institute (GII) is an initiative of the Munk School of Global Affairs. The GII was conceived in the Asian Institute at the Munk School and led by Professor Joseph Wong to provide intensive research and learning opportunities for secondary students. Starting this year, the Global Ideas Institute will be an ongoing collaborative program between the Munk School of Global Affairs, the Learning Partnership Canada, the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, and the University of Toronto Schools. Participating Grade 11 and 12 secondary student teams of 4-‐6 students, tackle a global challenge, a real-‐world problem without a current solution. U of T professors and expert practitioners will present monthly lectures that provide context to the issue. Each student team will also have U of T student mentors to guide and help them to develop innovative ideas to address the problem. Mentoring will take place each month following the expert lecture. Each lecture is supplemented with a package of articles, current research, and additional videos to provide students with context and knowledge. Faculty expertise combined with the support and guidance from U of T mentors will prepare secondary students for a day-‐long symposium to present their ideas at the Munk School of Global Affairs in April 2016. Previous GII Challenges In the past five years the Challenge Topics have been: Financial Inclusion in India; Scaling the Aravind Eye Institute program; broadening distribution of Sprinkles micronutrient packets; and reinventing the toilet. 2015-‐2016 Challenge Topic: Addressing the Issue of Child Birth Registration This year, the GII challenge focuses on the issue of birth registration. UNICEF reports; “The births of nearly one third of the global population of children under five have never been registered.” In their 2013 report, UNICEF estimates that over 230 million children are born without any official registration and formal recognition which in effect means that they have no official identity and they ‘do not exist’. This results in a lack of access to health care, education, state benefits and protections and other critical human rights for these children. Students are challenged to develop technical, policy, education and/or development interventions to improve birth registration rates in the global south. Participation Schools who choose to participate require the following:
• Each school must have a teacher champion and a team of 4-‐6 Grade 11 and 12 students; • Complete program surveys distributed in October and April for feedback and program assessment; • Attend monthly U of T presentations by renowned experts in brief “TED style” lectures; • Review distributed content-‐ including academic articles, videos and news articles prior to sessions; • Meet U of T student mentors, who will guide the teams through the problem-‐solving process; • Attend a day-‐long Final Symposium in April where students will present their strategy/solution; • Team Registration fee: $300.00
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, October 2nd, 2015
