DThe Newfoundland Health Group invites you to the inaugural UKNewfoundland Speciality. This exciting weekend event features fourfantastic health seminars, presented by nationally and internationallyrecognized experts. There are seminars on cardiology, skin complaints,orthopaedic problems and cancer. Whether you breed, show, work or simplyhave a newf for a family pet, this is a unique opportunity to learn about themajor health problems affecting Newfoundlands and other giant breeds.

An echo Doppler clinic will be held on both days so there is an opportunityfor you to have your dog screened by one of our registered veterinarycardiologists.

There will be the chance to have some fun as well. On Saturday you canhave a try at the Kennel Club Bronze Good Citizen award. After coffee therewill be a match, and hopefully a super match. Then it's off across the road tothe sailing club for an evening buffet, quiz and bingo.Early risers on Sunday are invited to join the Sunday ramble, with your cartsif you wish, before returning for breakfast.

There's a free goody bag for everyone. Stalls and refreshments will be onsite. Caravans and tents are welcome, or there are hotels near by.

"Scratch that itch! - Skin problems in the Newfoundland"and a Q & A session

Guest Speaker: Dr Neil McEwanUniversity of Liverpool

Neil qualified from the Edinburgh veterinary School in 1979. After a short time inpractice he took up a clinical position in the Glasgow veterinary School. Neil has aMasters degree in Veterinary cardiology but for the last twenty years he has concentratedon veterinary dermatology. He holds both the British and European diplomas inveterinary dermatology and is a Royal College and European recognised specialist inVeterinary Dermatology. In 2001 Neil was awarded a doctorate degree (DVM) forstudies into Canine dermatology. His clinical interests cover all aspects of veterinarydermatology and his main area of research is bacterial adherence.

Guest Speaker: Dr Jo Dukes-McEwanUniversity of Liverpool

Jo is from Herefordshire but graduated as a vet from the University ofGlasgow. She has worked in both general veterinary practice (Hereford, Canterbury andGlasgow) and in University Teaching Hospitals. She did an internship and residency atthe University of Glasgow, where she concentrated on cardiology and was awarded herRCVS certificate, and diploma in veterinary cardiology. She did her PhD and postdoctoral research at the University of Edinburgh, on Newfoundland DCM. She became aEuropean cardiology Diplomate in 2003. She has been a lecturer in cardiology at theUniversities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and is currently senior lecturer in cardiology atthe University of Liverpool small animal teaching hospital at Leahurst, and is head of thecardiology service. She is a European and RCVS recognised specialist in VeterinaryCardiology. She received the BSAVA Blaine award for services to cardiology andteaching cardiology in 2008.

"Cancer in Dogs - a growing problemGuest Speaker: Gerry Polton.

MA VetMB MSc (CHn One) MRCVSNorth Downs Referrals, Bletchingley Surrey.

Gerry Polton graduated from Cambridge Veterinary School in 1997 after which heinitially worked in first opinion practice. He entered specialist practice as a clinicaloncologist in 2002. Gerry was awarded a Master of Science degree in clinical oncologyby the Institute of Cancer Research at Birmingham University in 2003 having presented athesis on the subject of canine anal sac tumours, a subject area which, for better or worse,he appears to have made his own. Other oncological interests include lymphoma andleukaemia, canine lung tumours and canine insulinoma specifically, and canineprognostics generally. Gerry is a familiar feature as a speaker at a national andinternational meetings; he maintains special interests in infection control andcollaborative clinical research having coordinated professional groups in both fields.

During the seminar Gerry will present information about the prevalence of cancer amongdogs and what we know about the causes of canine cancer. Specific cancer types that areknown to be a higher risk for large and giant breeds will be presented in more detail withinformation about diagnostic and therapeutic options.

"Common Orthopaedic Problems"Guest Speaker: Malcolm McKee

RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Orthopaedics.The Willows Veterinary Referral Centre, Solihull.

Malcolm is a partner in Willows referral Service in Solihull, West Midlands. He has beena RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Orthopaedics since 1992. Malcolm received theBSAVA Simon award in 1995 for outstanding contributions in the field of veterinarysurgery. He is past chairman of the British Veterinary Orthopaedic Association. Malcolmhas a particular interest in joint replacement surgery, complex fracture management andspinal surgery in the dog.He has reviewed over 100 Newfoundlands, so is extremely well placed to talk about thebig three - hips, cruciates and elbows!

THE SPECIALITY DOPPLER CLINIC

The Doppler clinic will run on both days of the Speciality. Ms Sarah Smithwill be examining on Saturday the 26th September and Ms Vicki Ironside onSunday 27th September. These vets are both registered veterinarycardiologists.

The fee for the examination is £200.

The first appointment each day will be at 10am and each test takes about 60minutes depending on the dog. A small amount of coat may need to beclipped away to allow the scanner to make a good contact.

For the examination you will need to bring you Kennel Club registrationpapers.

You MUST register for the Speciality in order to take advantage of theDoppler clinic. One dog / person.

The Match and Super Match

Saturday 26th September at 4pm.

The Match:

Entries for the match will be taken throughout the day and the entry fee is£2.50. The judge is Jane Keeves.Classes for the match will be:

1. Puppy Roll (4-6months) Not judged. Free entry.2. Puppy match (6-12months)3. Open match dogs and bitches.4. Best puppy against best adult winner

5. Sep class - Veteran*6. Sep class - Welfare / Rehome**these final two classes will be judged as a group at the end of the match.

The Super Match:

A special license has been applied for from the Kennel Club for a supermatch. Entry to this exciting event will be by invitation ONLY to championsand CC winners. Mystery judge!

ACCOMMODATION

On Site: Caravans and tents are welcome on site at £8 per night. There areshowers and toilet blocks available close by, but no electrical hook ups. Wewould appreciate your co-operation by not using generators after 11pm. ASpeciality camping form is included in the back of this pack. Pleasecomplete this form and return it with your payment.

1. The Premier Inn Norton CanesThis Premier Inn is situated at the Norton Canes Services on the M6 toll,but can be accessed from Betty's Lane to the car park at the rear(avoiding the toll). The room rate is £50 per night, and rooms canaccommodate a family of 2+2 under 16 or made up into a twin with adouble and a single bed. Dogs are not allowed in the rooms. Jan Mercer,the deputy manager, has recommended reservations are made direct withthe hotel, and please mention the Speciality and she will try an allocaterooms overlooking the car park. 2. Express By Holiday Inn Lichfield: Wall Island, BirminghamRoad, Lichfield, WS 14 OQP. Reservations: 0871 423 4876This hotel is about 15 mins drive from Chasewater. The room rate is£69.00 per room per night inclusive of VAT and continental breakfast.Children under 18 stay free when sharing their parents' room. Dogs arepermitted in the rooms, but must be caged if they are left in the roomswhen guests are absent.

From North & South via M6

Exit at Junction 1 and head for Cannock onA460. At the first roundabout take the 3rd exit.After a short distance go over the secondroundabout, take the 1st Exit, follow road to thirdroundabout and take the 4th exit. Continue tofourth roundabout and take the 3rd exit leading tothe fifth roundabout. Take 1st exit onto ASgoing eastwards.

Keep travelling straight along AS eastwards andafter second roundabout road will become a dualcarriageway (be careful of 40mph speedcameras). Follow road through 2 sets of trafficlights, at the third set of traffic lights turn leftonto AS 195 to Burntwood (there is a Caravanstorage park on the left as you turn at this set oflights). At the first roundabout take the 1st exitand at the second roundabout take the 1st exit.After about a 1000 yards take a left turn intoPool Road, follow single track road to the end -Chasewater Activities Centre is on the right.

M6 Toll - Exit at T6. Proceed through toll booth; continueto the roundabout (approx 200m). Turn Right, A5195, afterapprox 1000 m turn Left, sign posted Sailing Club, andfollow the road to the end. Chasewater Outdoor ActivitiesCentre is on your right. Expensive but very easy!

From North & South via A38

•.nilTake AS westwards.At Muckley Corner roundabout take 2nQ exit thenonto second roundabout, take 2nd exit (A5intersection with A461). Stay on AS headingtowards Brownhills, the road becomes a dualcarriageway (be careful of 40mph speed cameras).Turn right at traffic lights onto AS 195 toBurntwood (there is a Caravan storage park on theleft as you turn at this set of lights). At the firstroundabout take the 1st exit, at the secondroundabout take the 1st exit.
