What do we mean by “Groups”?
Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature (IB English; two years required at Higher Level; new IBO curriculum and courses! two course options!)
Group 2: Language Acquisition (Spanish, French, Chinese)
Group 3: Individuals and Societies (IB History; one year required; for HL or SL it’s a two-year commitment)
Group 4: Sciences
Group 5: Mathematics (new IBO curriculum and courses!)
Group 6: The Arts ORComputer Science* ORa second Group 2, 3, or 4
* In order to HL or SL in Computer Science, the student must be enrolled in the computer science trajectory starting in the 9th grade
What is the Diploma Programme?
Six subjects or “groups”
○ Three Higher Level and Three Standard Level OR○ Four Higher Level and Two Standard Level

Extended Essay
The IB Diploma will be awarded if...● CAS completed● Candidates total points are 24 or more● No “N” or “E” for TOK, the EE, or any other subject● No grade of 1 (out of 7) awarded for any subject/ level● No more than two 2’s (HL or SL)● No more than three 3’s or below (HL or SL)● 12 points or more on HL (if student takes 4 HL’s, the highest three count)● 9 points or more on SL subjects (if student takes 2 SL’s, combined must be at least 5)● The student has not received a penalty for academic misconduct from Final Award Committee
What role do TOK and the EE play?
How are students assessed for IB Diploma?
Internal Assessments: graded internally; externally moderated
External Assessments: graded externally
EXAMS take place in May and are required for MOST courses.
IBO charges fees for exams: about $950; can be split into two payments--one junior year and one senior year; waivers available for those who qualify
What does junior year look like?
1. Start Theory of Knowledge - one full year (no longer an 8th period option)2. Choose which classes you will take based on…
a. The classes you are in now, sophomore yearb. The Higher Level exams you anticipate taking in May of 2022c. The Standard Level exams you will take in May of 2021 (2 maximum)
i. Complete coursework for MCPS and IBO assessments
3. Begin Extended Essay - lottery; complete first draft by June, 20214. Begin CAS entries; six complete by June, 20215. Begin college search, prepare for standardized tests, etc.
What does senior year look like?
1. Finish Theory of Knowledge (first semester, 2021-2022)2. Complete coursework for MCPS and IB assessments based on junior year
selections3. Complete Extended Essay (by October, 2021)4. Complete CAS entries; four more completed by January 20225. Apply to colleges, write essays, complete testing, etc.

How to get a Bilingual IB diplomaStudents must take IB Language and Literature course SL or HL (our IB 7) after IB 6. In May of their senior year, they take the IB Language A: Language and Literature exam and if they earn a qualifying score, they will earn their International Baccalaureate Bilingual Diploma.How to get the State of Maryland Seal of Biliteracy ● Earn a 4 or a 5 in any of the AP Language and Culture exams ( Chinese, French,

IB MATH APPLICATIONS STATISTICS CALCULUS 1 (344400/344500)This course is designed for students who enjoy describing the real world and solving practical problems using mathematics, those who are interested in harnessing the power of technology alongside exploring mathematical models and enjoy the more practical side of mathematics.
IB MATH ANALYSIS STATISTICS CALCULUS 1 (344000/344100)This course is intended for students who wish to pursue studies in mathematics at university or subjects that have a large mathematical content; it is for students who enjoy developing mathematical arguments, problem solving and exploring real and abstract applications, with and without technology. With some supplemental review students will be prepared for the AP BC Calculus exam.
Science Choices
Rising juniors need 3 NGSS science courses for graduation. IB and AP courses count as NGSS aligned, thus students are not required to take physics. However, the MISA test has Bio, Chem and Physics on it. Review of some physics topics will be necessary.
