Each session consists of:

» Warm-up and cool-down exercises.» Six basic core movements and six

advanced extension movements.

The one-hour sessions meet one to two times per week for eight weeks.

Experience Tai Chi

Tai Chi for Arthritis is an evidenced-based program developed by Dr. Paul Lam to reduce pain and improve your mental and physical well-being. The program uses Sun-style Tai Chi — one of the four major recognized ancient Chinese styles of Tai Chi. Sun-style may be particularly effective for people with arthritis because it includes agile steps and exercises that improve mobility, breathing and relaxation. In addition, the movements have higher stances, making it easier and more comfortable to learn.

What Is Tai Chi for Arthritis?

Tai Chi will help you achieve:

» Reduced pain and stiffness.» Reduced stress and depression.» Improved concentration and memory.» Improved balance and coordination.» Improved muscle strength and stamina.» Improved posture and body awareness.» Increased circulation, heart and

lung function.

What Are the Benefits?UT Extension educators who have successfully completed the Tai Chi for Arthritis Instructor Training Program are certified and approved by the Tai Chi for Health Institute to teach this program. Certified instructors demonstrate joint-safe exercises that help participants improve muscle strength, mobility, coordination and relaxation.

Who Leads the Program?

Tai Chi is beneficial for all individuals who want to begin a joint-safe exercise program, but targets individuals who experience mild to moderate impaired joint motion and/or strength.
