Clube de Tavira
Tavira is one of the architecturally most attractive towns in ththe Algarve. Its origin dates back 8 century BC, and during
th ththe Moorish occupation, between the 8 and 13 centuries
AD, agriculture and fishing were of great importance. Tavira
was under Arab rule until its conquest by the Knights of the
Order of Santiago, D. Paio Peres Correia, in 1242. It was
elevated to a city in 1520 by King Manuel I and it was the
main trading port, in Algarve, exporting salted fish, as well
as dried fruits (almonds and figs), wine and other products, threaching distant ports of Italy and Flanders, during the 16 ,
th th17 and 18 centuries.
After the earthquake in 1755 the town has been rebuilt with thmany fine 18 Century buildings. The surroundings of
Tavira are still very rural but slowly changing due to the
demands of tourist industry with three golf courses, where
the tourists can play all the year, with wonderful weather.
The beach can only be reached by a ferryboat that takes the
visitor to “Ilha de Tavira”. It lies 25 Km from the Spanish
border and 180Km from Seville (Spain).
