The Swiss Tunnelling Society (STS/FGU) welcomes you cordially to the 16th Swiss Tunnel Congress (STC) in the impressive concert hall of the KKL (Culture and Congress Centre, Lucerne).
We can be proud! On 1 June 2016, on the occasion of the open-ing of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, «Europe» gave due recog-nition to Switzerland’s monumental achievement. The name «Gotthard» has become synonymous with competence, know-how, capability, precision and vision. In the book «Tunnelling the Gotthard», published by the STS, with the contributions of
over a hundred professionals directly involved in the construction, the facts of the Gotthard Base Tunnel are brought together in over 700 pages and are thoroughly documented for future generations of tunnelling engineers. There was constant development during construction of this hundred-year project. As a result, the STC has established itself today as one of the leading congresses in Europe. It is an important platform for owners, planners, engineers, suppliers, service providers, contractors and industry, allowing one to experience first-hand new developments in tunnel projects in Switzerland and abroad as well as providing an opportunity to meet friends and acquaintances. Therefore, it is a «must» for all tunnelling experts.
Currently, many new tunnels are being built or are in the planning phase in Switzerland. Another important topic is the maintenance of the fabric of exis-ting underground structures. We decided therefore to consider this topic in this year’s Swiss Tunnel Colloquium with the title «Maintenance and Renewal of Traffic Tunnels», with which the STC commences on Tuesday afternoon. For everyone involved in projects concerning rehabilitation under operational conditions it is challenging from the operational, technical, logistical and economics standpoints.
For the day of the actual congress we were able once more to put together an interesting programme. Water power projects provide further «tasty morsels» for a technically exciting exchange of experiences. This year again the STC reports on specifically selected international tunnelling projects, mainly those with the use of Swiss know-how.
The exhibition, the dinner and the excursions provide the congress with an excel-lent framework for fostering personal contacts.
It is 44 years since the present Swiss Tunnelling Society (STS) was founded as the «FGU – Fachgruppe für Untertagbau». Following the example of other countries and with the support of the STS, in 2016 young professionals in underground con-struction have launched the «STS young members» (STSym). The STSym is open to young engineers below the age of 35. I have much pleasure in this development.
At this point I would like to thank the organisers, the lecturers, the exhibitors and above all our faithful sponsors for their dedication and support. Without them there would be no Swiss Tunnel Congress.
I wish you an interesting time and enriching encounters and enjoy your time in Lucerne.

Topic «Maintenance and Renewal of Traffic Tunnels»Many of our traffic tunnels are subjected to high loads, which accelerates their aging. Often, they no longer conform to today’s user requirements. Outer and inner linings, drainage, operating equipment and accessory traffic structures have to be renewed under operational conditions. Tunnels with an inadequate mini-mum clearance outline have to be enlarged, and this with the least possible inter-ference with the flow of traffic. The theme of the Colloquium is more relevant than ever. The Rhaetian Railway Company has developed the concept of a new standard construction type, which is discussed thoroughly as the main topic in the first part of the Colloquium. The enlargement of the Stalvedro road tunnel illust-rates the challenges of a construction site under traffic conditions. The construc-tion material must be readily available and the cramped working conditions require a slender construction method. The inner lining consisting of shotcrete with a sprayed water seal together with precast elements consisting of polymer concrete are excellent solutions to meet these requirements. FEDRO launched an initial research project, which should regulate the processes required to maintain traditional drill-and-blast tunnels. This shows how important and controversial the topic “Maintenance and Renewal” is. Lecturers from the sectors of owner, planning, contractors, industry and research will report on the topic from a prac-tical standpoint. As always, the Colloquium is directed towards students and young engineers as well as experienced practitioners, who construct or operate tunnel works.

A) A9-Construction Site Riedberg Tunnel
The Riedberg Tunnel is part of the motorway A9. More than ten years ago the tunnel advance was halted due to the displacements measured at the ground surface. Demanding technical measures help to minimise the effects of the ground movements during the whole lifetime of the tunnel, allowing the resumption of the tunnelling works to start early in 2017.

B) Belchen Tunnel (SO/BL)
The 3.2 km rehabilitation work for the Belchen tunnel of the motorway A2 between Basel and Egerkingen involves the construction of a third tunnel tube Belchen (STB). The section to be excavated has a large amount of swelling rocks such as Gypsum Keuper Marl and Opalinus Clay. Rehabilitation of the two exis-ting, directionally separated, two-lane tubes from the year 1970 is urgent. In order to keep the resulting traffic restrictions as small as possible a third tube was necessary. The drive for the STB with the largest TBM in Switzerland with a diameter of 14 m was begun in February 2016 and will be completed in mid 2017. At the same time, behind the TBM work on the final structure of the inner lining is being carried out, including the intermediate floor.

D) Schlossberg-Parking in Thun (BE)
Inside the Schlossberg in Thun, work is ongoing until autumn 2018 on the new underground parking facility “Parking City East Schlossberg”. Using the method of underground construction, in eight column-free semi-floors around 300 parking places will be constructed. The excavation works in the cavern’s heading as well as the installation of the final vault have been completed. Since early 2017 the remaining excavation work for the benches is being carri-ed out using a roadheader.
