About WALLAThe mission of the Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association, Inc. (WALLA) is to offer intellectual, cultural, and social opportunities for individuals 50 years of age and older. Classes have been offered since the spring of 1993. There are no educational prerequisites to participate. WALLA volunteers plan and coordinate classes, seminars, tours, and social events. WALLA is a long-time member of the Road Scholar Institute Network (Elderhostel.)

Classes are offered in a variety of subjects for a period of four weeks each spring and fall. Participation in WALLA is open to anyone in Tippecanoe County and the surrounding counties.

WALLA, incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation, is governed by an area-wide, twenty member, volunteer Board of Directors. The Curriculum Committee plans each session of classes. Presenters, drawn from Purdue University and the surrounding communities, volunteer their time and expertise. Several classes are peer-led.

Purdue University coordinates the WALLA program through the Office of Engagement.

The 2019 Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association, Inc. (WALLA) fall classes will be October 14-November 7.

Most of the WALLA classes will be held at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 4703 N 50 W, West Lafayette. This site is easily reached by driving north on Salisbury in West Lafayette to the Church entrance on the east side of the road.

An additional late afternoon class will be held at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation Building, 638 North Street in Lafayette.

Please do not hesitate to ask questions. Those should be addressed to the WALLA office or to Mary Gardner, NOT to the Church office.

Course Descriptions

Monday/Wednesday 9-10:15 a.m.From L’Encyclopédie to Wikipedia: A Brief History

Kristine Anderson, coordinator and presenter

The dream of putting all of the world’s knowledge into a single container for everyone to use is as old as the written word. Yet the task turns out to be harder than anyone expected. This course will examine historically the efforts to fulfill this dream between the publication of Diderot’s L’Encyclopédie, which helped spark the French Revolution, and today’s Wikipedia, which has freed itself from the confines of the codex for the internet and also calls itself a revolution. Along the way we will look at the Encyclopedia Britannica and other national encyclopedias as well as subject encyclopedias which seek to lay out the parameters of a narrow field of study. Topics to be covered are the utopian impulses motivating such works, the world views that emerge from them, their purposes, both overt and covert, and the best tactics for using and writing for them if one so chooses.Kristine, professor emerita from Purdue’s Libraries, also has a background in comparative literature and brings many diverse classes to WALLA.

Monday/Wednesday 9-10:15 a.m.The Impressionists

Mary Quinn, coordinator and presenter

Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement originating with a group of Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870’s and 1880’s. The Impressionists loosened their brushwork and lightened their palettes to include pure, intense colors. Their emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), and inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience set them apart from previous schools of painting.Learn about the Impressionist movement through some of the painters and their works: from Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies, Giverny” and Edgar Degas’ “Prima Ballerina” to George Seurat’s “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” or Mary Cassatt’s “Mother and Child,” and much more.

Changed AmericaJim Garland, coordinator and presenter

“My office renders me so completely insignificant that all Parties can afford to treat me with a decent respect which accordingly they do, as far as I observe, or hear or suspect. They all know that I can do them neither much good nor much harm.” John Adams when first vice president.John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson: Eight times, a vice president has become president upon the death of his predecessor—history altered by a heartbeat. Epic Journeys: Purdue’s Big ReadElizabeth Boyle and Daniel Froid, co-coordinators and

presenters

Homer’s The Odyssey has long been considered a foundational text in the Western literary canon. Emily Wilson’s 2017 translation of The Odyssey, which is the focus of Purdue’s 2019 Big Read, marks the first time a woman has translated Homer’s epic into English. Wilson’s translation has been widely celebrated for its clarity, freshness and beauty. Elizabeth, visiting professor in English, and Daniel, graduate research assistant, return to lead registrants through discussions of Wilson’s translation, focusing on the following questions (and much more): Why does Homer’s epic poem continue to capture readers’ imaginations? How does this translation make anew this classical text and ensure that it appeals to modern readers?Registrants may sign out the book at the WALLA office prior to the start of class.10/14 Books 1-610/16 Books 7-1210/21 Books 13-1810/23 Books 19-24

Monday/Wednesday 10:30-11:45 a.m.Gregg Toland’s Movie Photography in 1941

Marshall Deutelbaum, coordinator and presenter

Arguably the most innovative cinematographer of his generation, Gregg Toland (1904-1948) photographed three movies in 1941: Ball of Fire, directed by Howard Hawks; The Little Foxes, directed by William Wyler; and Citizen Kane, directed by Orson Welles. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1942 for his work on Citizen Kane, but lost to Arthur Miller who photographed How Green Was My Valley, which received four other Academy Awards including Best Picture. Many think that the Hollywood community’s dislike of Orson Welles cost Toland the award for cinematography. (Ironically, Toland had wanted to photograph How Green Was My Valley, but was prevented from doing so by his commitment to film The Little Foxes.)Here’s a chance to make up our minds about Toland’s loss for ourselves. We will familiarize ourselves with Toland’s photographic style in Ball of Fire and The Little Foxes, then see how he

photographed Citizen Kane, and bring what we’ve learned to judge Arthur Miller’s comparative achievement in How Green Was My Valley. In the process of learning a little about what cinematography can add to storytelling, we’ll have the pleasure of enjoying four worthwhile movies. Marshall, emeritus professor of English, returns to share his knowledge of films and to help us create a critical eye.

Tuesday/Thursday 9-10:15 a.m.MINI-COURSE: October 15, 17, 22, 24

Murder and Magic in 1893 ChicagoDonna Stonehill, coordinator and presenter

Large cities in 1893 were dirty, disgusting hovels and the contrast with gleaming white architectural marvels of the Columbian Exposition of 1893, nicknamed the “White City,” attracted an estimated 26 million visitors to the city of Chicago. The existence of the World’s Fair also drew many young women who came to work during the fair, creating a pool of victims for the charming serial killer, H. H. Holmes. He was the first documented serial killer in the United States, and his World’s Fair Hotel, later to be nicknamed the “murder castle,” was an easy walk from the “White City.” We’ll compare and contrast the men, innovations and trivia which made 1893 a year like no other. Although not required, your experience will be enhanced if you read “The Devil and the White City” by Erik Larson. Some books will be available to be checked out at the WALLA office.Donna has an interest in many areas and willingly shares them with WALLA.

Tuesday/Thursday 10:30-11:45 a.m.Music of Our Lives

Gail Beck, coordinator and presenter

One of life’s greatest joys is reminiscing over past pleasures, and music is a great way to remember. There is an actual physical reaction when you hear the melodies of old favorites. Many of the songs we cherish date back to the 1930’s; therefore, this class will start there and wander through the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Recorded music, video and live music will be used. Quizzes, sing-a-longs and perhaps a chance to dance will be included. Biographies of composers and performers as well as the origins of bands will be pursued.Come on out and renew your memories with Gail, who is another of our history buffs and researchers.

Tuesday/Thursday 10:30-11:45 a.m.Mahabharata – The Principle Story

Kristine Anderson, coordinator

At about ten times longer than the Iliad and The Odyssey combined, Mahabharata is one of the two great epics of Hindu India. This course will introduce the registrants to the epic’s core narrative about the two sets of paternal first cousins who fight bitterly over the possession of ancestral lands. We will also explore a few of the frame tales within the greater epic.Reva Chandrasekaran, former librarian and Peace Corp volunteer, returns to teach us more about India.

Life in MiniaturesDonna Stonehill, coordinator and presenter

We’ll examine the history of miniatures, originally housed in glass-fronted “cabinet rooms” and flaunted as a sign of wealth. These were not toys, but collector items. These look-but-don’t touch miniatures evolved into expensive dollhouses used for teaching girls about the specifics of managing a home. Ultimately these houses began being mass-produced, putting them within the reach of all children. We’ll look at dollhouses through the decades, and the return to the artisan

The victorious Western Allies of WWI met at the Versailles Peace Conference (1919) to settle the fate of all of Europe, but various contentious national groups in Central and Eastern Europe had their own, often conflicting, agendas. Resurgent Baltic states, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Balkan peoples struggled to establish their long-suppressed identities. What followed was Communist control of Central and Eastern Europe for more than forty years.
