How to Engage Millennials at Work: Understanding Where They Are Coming From and What It Means for ManagementBy 2025, a majority of working-aged people will be from the millennial generation (those born between 1980 and 2000).

As millennials become a larger part of the workforce, their values, approach to work, and experiences are disrupting workplaces in all sectors of the economy causing inter-generational conflict that lowers productivity and weakens organizational culture. David Coletto, a leading expert on generational change and the millennial generation shares insights from his more than six years of research trying to understand where his own generation is coming from. David takes his audience on a journey to understand why millennials are the way they are, what makes them different, and how managers can better engage and empower their teams to be more productive employees.

Luncheon Keynote 12:30 – 1:30 pmKevin Rempel  Author | Paralympian

Be the Hero of Your Own Movie Paralyzed after a motocross crash in 2006, Kevin had to face unsurmountable odds while learning to walk again at the age of 23. Adding to this, Kevin had to deal with his father, Gerry, who also was living in a wheelchair, after a fall that left him a complete paraplegic one year from retirement. Unfortunately

Gerry couldn’t deal with living with his circumstances and took his own life in July 2007. That following year, “Remps” as he likes to be called by his friends, found sledge hockey and set his sights

on making Team Canada and playing in the Paralympics. Since then he has travelled the world, inspired thousands of people, and has published his biography titled Still Standing – When You Have Every Reason To Give Up, Keep Going. Kevin’s story has been featured around the world on TSN, BBC Sport, and CTV. Kevin is an ambassador for RBC’s Wings for Life, and Movember. To this day Kevin still loves to ride his motorcycle and is focused on helping grow the sport of sledge hockey through his newest venture, the Sledge Hockey Experience.

10:30–11:45 am Choose OneChanges to the Employment Standards Act: What Does it Mean to You?Steve Lauzon, Project and Policy Advisor, Ministry of Labour (MOL) Employment Practices Branch

Workers in Ontario have the right to strong protections at work. Fairness and decency must continue to be the defining values of our workplaces. These legislative changes seek to create more opportunity and security for workers across Ontario. This session will focus on the changes made to the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA) as a result of Bill 148, such as: Equal Pay for Equal Work Provisions: Casual, Part-time, Temporary & Seasonal Employees, Overtime Pay, Employee Misclassification, Joint Liability, Paid Leaves, and Penalties for Non-Compliance of the ESA.

Chronic Mental StressLina Bava, Manager, Claims, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB)

Lui Tassone, Manager, RTW, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB)

Good mental health is key to having productive workplaces in Ontario. Effective January 1, 2018, people with work-related chronic mental stress may be eligible for Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) benefits. Officials from the WSIB will describe the recent legislative and policy changes related to chronic mental stress, as well as the WSIB's service delivery approach.

Smartphones and the Pursuit of Workplace WellnessJim Lees, MSW, RSW, Human Resource Consultant

Smartphones have been blamed for everything from shorter attention spans, depression, the Trump presidency and global warming; leaving many to wonder where the truth ends and hysteria begins. This session will examine the impact smartphone technology has had on the workforce and consider the challenge of balancing the increasing demands for productivity and efficiency with the mental health and wellness of employees.

Imminent Threats of Violence in the Workplace or at HomeJim Rovers, Senior Vice President, AFIMAC Global

This session will give your organization suggestions to help you minimize an active shooter situation, it's not just a Big City issue. We begin with the most critical element of the plan — effective and timely communication to local public emergency services and all facility/property occupants. We will then outline the deployment guidelines for on-site security forces and their cooperation with public emergency service personnel, the establishment of a command post to coordinate the lock down procedures, the apprehension of the shooter, and finally the incident documentation and evaluation.

Positive Reinforcement of Safe BehavioursTerry Bochko, CRSP, President/Owner, Paramount Safety Management Services

Caught doing something right! The benefits of recognizing and reinforcing safe behaviours will have a positive impact on your organization’s safety program. It is a natural human reaction to look for and/or focus on the negative. The challenge in today’s workforce is to have a positive presence and be proactive while utilizing your leading indicators to drive your safety program. Positive reinforcement of observed safe behaviours will have a direct impact on safety performance.

Chemical Eye Injuries Ina Chomyshyn, CIH, ROH, Regional Occupational Hygienist Ontario Ministry of Labour (MOL)

It is up to the employer to assess the risk of chemical eye injuries, which depends on two things: 1) the nature of chemicals used in the workplace and 2) the work tasks involving these chemicals (could they be splashed into a worker’s eyes?). Then the employer must take every reasonable precaution to prevent eye injuries and to mitigate damage should an eye injury occur. This introductory session provides information on the eye hazards of common chemicals, desirable design features of eye first aid equipment and typical regulatory requirements.

Part 1 Walk this Way and Protect Your Workers by Having a Pedestrian Traffic PlanDavid Roberts, CRSP, Environmental Health & Safety Specialist, Coca-Cola®

Norm Kramer, Consultant, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS)

Vehicles moving in and around a workplace, reversing, loading and unloading are too often linked to serious injuries to workers and the public. It has become clear that a traffic flow risk plan is critical to the operational plan for a workplace in order to prevent injuries and fatalities. In this interactive session we review proposed amendments to the Industrial Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), including the requirement to develop and maintain a written traffic management control program. Hear how Coca-Cola® has successfully developed and implemented a plan to protect pedestrians in their facility and develop a plan to identify and control traffic hazards specific to your workplace.

Asbestos, Legal Changes and RequirementsJacquie Elvish, B.Sc., CRSP, Corporate Health & Safety Officer True Grit Engineering

Do you own a building constructed prior to 1995? Are you a contractor or employee (e.g. trades people or maintenance/custodial staff) doing work in buildings? Are you part of a Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) in a building constructed before 1995? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, attend this session to find out what your obligations are under Ontario Regulation 278/05.

The Benefits of Exercise: Mental Health DaysSabrina Francescut, R. Kin, CRSP President, Ontario Kinesiology Association

Regular exercise is one of the most powerful health-promoting practices that physicians and other health care professionals can prescribe to their patients. The benefits of exercise are more than just cardiovascular help and muscular strength. Approximately 63% of Ontarians are affected by one or more chronic conditions and exercise can help with some of these conditions. One study showed that for every dollar spent on promoting exercise and good diet it can save $6 in the cost of caring for people with chronic diseases. For some people exercise can decrease depression as effectively as pharmacological care. Let's have a discussion about the benefits of exercise and how they can help you with your health and safety program and employees.

The Calm After the Storm: Violence Incident InvestigationsKaren McKissick, CRSP, Safety Officer Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board (TBCDSB)

On October 4th, 2011, Laura Darby was attacked by a predatory black bear in a remote forested area north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. After five hours, three helicopters and with the assistance of numerous individuals, Laura escaped the deadly grip of the bear and was evacuated to the care of the nearby hospital. Laura had lost a significant amount of blood and yet continued to narrowly cling on to life. Every minute counted. Every helping hand tipped the scale in her favour. She sustained life threatening injuries requiring several surgeries, months of treatment and ongoing recovery. Today, Laura lives to share her experience, and advocates for the importance of safety training and preparedness in the wilderness.

Workplace Violence and Harassment: Beyond Bills 132 and 168Brad Smith, Partner LLP, Weiler, Maloney, Nelson

We have all heard about Bill 132 and 168, but now what? Ministry of Labour (MOL) Inspectors have powers that can be exercised in respect of workplace harassment. Employers are likely to face challenges in managing these new requirements and powers as they can give rise to some complex and thorny issues. This session will provide assistance to employers in understanding compliance expectations and managing the impact of the new requirements and expanded powers of the MOL.
