• Americans gave more than $390.05 billion in 2016, making it the most generous year on record

• From 2015 to 2016, total giving increased by 2.7% in current dollars and 1.4% when adjusted for inflation

• Since 1976, the average annual adjusted growth has been 2.9%

• Individuals continue to be the single largest source

of charitable donations

• 48.7% of foundation giving came from family

foundations, representing 7.3% of total charitable

giving

• When individual gifts are combined with bequests

and family foundation giving, individuals

contributed 87.3% of all philanthropic dollars in

2016
