In 1602, the Dutchconstructed a fort here. In 1857, the British conquered the Dutch. They converted it intoa jail in 1864 and elevated it into a central jail in 1870. The jail is spread over 196 acres(79 ha) out of which the buildings occupy 37.24 acres (15.07 ha).In the Madras Presidency, the District of Rajahmundry was created in 1823.It wasreorganised in 1859 and was bifurcated into Godavari and Krishna districts. DuringBritish rule, Rajahmundry was the headquarters of Godavari district, which was furtherbifurcated into East Godavari and West Godavari districts in 1925. When the Godavaridistrict was split, Kakinada became the headquarters of East Godavari.Rajahmundrywas the hotbed of several movements during India's freedom struggle and acted as abase for many key leaders. When the Indian National Congress had its first meeting inBombay (Mumbai), two leaders from Rajahmundry, Nyapathi Subba Rao and KandukuriVeeresalingam, participated in it. Subba Rao, founder of Hindu Samaj in Rajahmundry, was also one of the six founders of India's noted English daily, The Hindu. The Renaissance of Andhra Pradesh started in Rajahmundry. KandukuriVeeresalingam is known as the Father of reforms in Andhra Pradesh. He started amonthly magazine Vivekavardhini, and a school for girls at Dowleswaram in 1874. Thefirst widow remarriage took place on 11 December 1881. A society with 16 memberswas started on 22 June 1884, which used to look after widow remarriages inRajahmundry. The town hall was established in 1890 by Veeresalingam. Bipin ChandraPal visited Rajahmundry in April 1905 during the Vandemataram Movement. During hisvisits, he used to address the public in "Pal Chowk" (the present-day Kotipalli Bus

The place is now the Ayakar Bhavan.Rajahmundry is acclaimed as the birthplace of the Telugu language – its grammar andscript evolved from the pen of the city-born poet Nannayya. Also known as 'Ādi Kavi'(the first poet) of Telugu, Nannayya, along with Tikkana and Yerrana, translatedthe Sanskrit version of Mahabharata into Telugu. 3.Draksharama (Swayambhu) :

Draksharama is a town in East Godavari district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The Bhimeswara Swamy temple in this town is one of the five temples of Shiva knownas Pancharama Kshetras. The Manikyamba temple in this town is one of the eighteentemples of Maha Shakti Pithas in India.Daksha prajapati is son of Lord Brahma and grandson of Lord Vishnu. He rises to powerand becomes the head of all prajapatis with the help of trimurtis(Brahma, Vishnu andShiva). After rising to power and attaining powers from Creator, Preserver andDestroyers he starts getting arrogant. Daksha asks Chandra(Moon God) to marry his 27adopted daughters (Stars Ashwini, Bharani,....). Chandra accepts the proposal andmarries all 27 stars but loves Rohini a lot and neglects all other 26 stars. Due to hisnegligence remaining 26 daughters of Daksha goes to Daksha and complains about thebad behavior of Chandra. After getting furious by deeds of Chandra, Daksha gives him acurse to get infected by tuberculosis and die. Chandra goes to Lord Siva and begs hismercy. Siva being a kind god accepts his request and promises Chandra to save him.Daksha comes to Siva asking not to save Chandra. Siva rejects Daksha's appeal and tellshim that he will not break his promise of saving Chandra. This makes Daksha angry onShiva. Lord Vishnu then comes to rescue and makes Chandra undergo two transitionsSukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. Chandra prays Siva to accept his living at Siva's feet.Siva lifts Chandra from the feet and places him on his head thus becoming "ChandraMouleesawara". This ego spat between Siva and Daksha worsens meanwhile. Dakshawants his Daughter Sati to get married and announces Swayamvara in the thought ofinsulting Siva, Daksha keeps a statue of Shiva at the gate as a gate keeper. Sati chosesthat Siva statue as her husband. Siva comes and takes Sati with him to kailasa aftermarrying her. Daksha goes furious about this and grows enmity with Siva. After fewyears, Daksha announces yagna where he avoids inviting Siva and calls it "Nireeswarayagna". All devas warn him against the odds of not inviting and insulting Siva. Dakshagives them a cold shoulder and starts doing "Nireeswara Yagna".After knowing that her father is doing a great sin, Dakshayani/Sati wants to stop hisfather from doing that. She asks Siva to permit her to attend the "Nireeswara Yagna"and stop it. Siva warns her not to go as they were not invited. Sati wants to go at anycost and Siva accepts her request about going there. Sati reaches Daksha vaatika, asksher mother and sisters to stop yagna but they don't speak to her. She goes to all inviteesand asks them to stop the yagna but they won't help her. Finally she goes to her fatherand asks him to stop "Nireeswara yagna". Instead of stopping yagna Daksha startsabusing Siva and Sati humiliating her from every side. Due to the great insult happenedto her and her husband Sati immolates herself at "Daksha aaraama".Knowing about the immolation of Sati, Siva goes into deep pain and anger. He danceslike a maniac in grief and anger. Then plucks one of his matted dread locks and hits it tothe ground from which a great warrior emerges. Siva names him "Vira Bhadra" the onewho gives safety with bravery and asks him to go to "Daksha aaraama" and killeveryone. Vira Bhadra goes to "Daksha aaraama" defeats everyone in the battle andbeheads "Daksha". Later by the request of Daksha's wife, Siva makes Daksha live againby fixing goats head to his body. With great grief Siva lifts the body of Sati and startsdancing. To control Siva's grief Vishnu cuts Sati's body into 18 parts and those parts getsfallen at different places in India. The place where Sati's body parts were fallen are

called Shakti Peetas. Here at Draksharamam Navel area of Sati devi was fallen hence theconsort of Siva(Bheemeswara) was called "Maanikyaamba". Where Mani means navel inSanksrit, goddess was named "Maanikyaamba". Thus becoming "Bheemeswara andMaanikyaamba" of Drakshaarama.

4.Antarvedi :Also known as "Dakshina Kashi (Kashi of the South), Antarvedi, is an important pilgrimcentre in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh state in India, situated at theinterior part at East coast. Lord Brahma, in order to get freed from the sins he hadcommitted against Lord Sankara, had performed Rudrayaga and installed Lord Neelakantheswara there. As that place was made a stage or "Vedik" to perform the Yagam, itwas named as "ANTARVEDI" It is a small village in Sakhinetipalle Mandal which islocated close to Narsapur near the Bay of Bengal Coast and Vashishtha River. This riveris said to have been brought by Maharishi Vashishtha, one of the Sapthrishis(sevengreat sages) of Hindu Mythology. It draws people from far off places throughout theyear because of its unique rarity: the confluence or mergence of Bay of Bengal andVashishtha River, a tributary of River Godavari. The place of confluence where themighty ocean Bay of Bengal meets the Vashishtha River is called the "Sapta SagaraSangam Pradesam" and also as "Anna Chelli Gattu". One can even taste the water here asit is not salty but quite sweet!!!! Unbelievable but true!!! This place is the last and themost important of the seven sacred bathing places. It is popularly believed that theTretha Yugam episode of Ksheera Sagara Mathanam took place here.

5.Indra Keeladri Hill – Shri Kanakadurga (Swayambhu)Temple

Kanaka Durga Temple is a famous hindu Temple of Goddess Durga locatedin Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The temple is located on the Indrakeeladri hill, on thebanks of Krishna River. Kaalika puraana, Durgaa sapthashati and other vedic literaturehave mentioned about Goddess Kanaka Durga on the Indrakeelaadri and have describedthe deity as Swayambhu, (self-manifested) in Triteeya kalpa.According to a legend, the now verdant Vijayawada was once a rocky region strewnwith hills that obstructed the flow of River Krishna. The land was thus rendered unfitfor habitation or cultivation. Invocation to Lord Shiva for His intervention directed thehills to make way for the river. And the river started flowing unimpeded with all itsmight, through the tunnels or "Bejjam" bored into the hills by Lord Shiva. That is howthe place got its name BezawadaOne of the many mythologies associated with this place is that Arjuna prayed to LordShiva on top of Indrakeela hill to win His blessings and the city derived its name"Vijayawada" after this victory. Another popular legend is about the triumph of goddessKanakadurga over the demon King Mahishasura. It is said that the growing menace ofdemons became unbearable for the natives. Sage Indrakila practiced severe penance, and when the goddess appeared the sage pleaded Her to reside on his head and keepvigil on the wicked demons. As per his wishes of killing the demons, Goddess Durgamade Indrakila Her permanent abode. Later, She also slayed the demon kingMahishasura freeing the people of Vijayawada from evilAt the Kanakadurga temple, the enchanting 4-foot-high (1.2 m) icon of the deity isbedecked in glittering ornaments and bright flowers. Her icon here depicts Her eight-armed form -each holding a powerful weapon- in a standing posture over the demonMahishashura and piercing him with Her trident. The goddess is the epitome of beautyAdjacent to the Kanakadurga temple is the shrine of Malleswara Swamy on theIndrakeeladri. By ascending the steps on the hill, one comes across little images ofdifferent deities, prominent among them are Kanaka Durga, Malleswara andKrishna(River).

6.Amaravati :Amaravati is the de facto capital city of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The plannedcity is located on the southern banks of the Krishna river in Guntur district, withinthe Andhra Pradesh Capital Region, being built on a 217 sq km riverfront designed tohave 51% of green spaces and 10% of water bodies. The word "Amaravati" derives fromthe historical Amaravathi village, the ancient capital of the Satavahanadynasty. The foundation stone was laid on 22 October 2015,at Uddandarayunipalem area by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The metropolitanarea of Guntur and Vijayawada are the major conurbations of Amaravati.Amaravati isbeing constructed to serve as the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh, after Telangana was split off as a separate state in 2014. The former capitalcity, Hyderabad, is now located inside Telangana. A new capital city had to be eitherassigned or constructed on the remaining territory of Andhra Pradesh and Amaravatiwas finally chosen as that. For a transitional period of no more than 10 years,Hyderabad could continue to serve as the residence of Andhra Pradesh's official stateinstitutions; thus, they are required to move to the newly constructed capital ofAmaravati by 2024.As per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act (2014), Hyderabad became the capital ofthe then newly formed state of Telangana, post bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. However, Hyderabad would remain as the joint capital of both states for a period oftime not exceeding ten years. Hence, Amaravati is being built to serve as the capital ofAndhra Pradesh
