North East Regional Badminton Coach Appointed The five North East Community Badminton Networks (CBNs) are de-lighted to announce that they have issued a self employed contract to Sam Moore. Sam was selected for contract after demonstrating his enthusiasm and passion for the sport. A graduate from Northumbria University in Applied Sport and Exercise Science, and a current Sports Marketing Masters student, Sam has experience delivering in schools, clubs and has also assisted at Newcastle Badminton Per-formance Centre. Sam has good knowledge of the CBN structure in the North East and the CBNs are looking forward to working closely with Sam to get more people playing badminton in clubs, No Strings sessions and projects.

Durham City Community Badminton Network

Durham Swifts formed in January 2012, with coaching sessions for juniors and seniors. Since being estab-lished Durham Swifts have gone from strength to strength. Operating at capacity in it’s junior sections and now with a full working committee, they are looking to secure a permanent venue and enter the local leagues for the coming seasons.

With the appointment of the Regional Coach, Durham Swifts will now be launching it’s school programme with Sam delivering in schools on Tuesdays during term time. Sam will in total deliver 4 hours in 25 prima-ries, 6 hours in 8 secondary schools and 6 hours in 4 sixth forms and college insti-tutions across the academic year. Durham Swifts are now working towards Premier Club status which is hoped to be achieve by the start of the new season, and are looking to initiate Durham’s first junior club league between junior clubs across the County.

Gateshead Community Badminton Network

Gateshead Community Badminton Network is proud of the work that is be-ing carried out by Gateshead Badminton Club. Establishing themselves swiftly, they have gone from strength to strength and have ignited the devel-opment of badminton across the borough. Through up to date marketing and social media, the club have a extremely well attended club night, aver-aging 30 people each week and now have a 10 man strong committee who are working hard to cater for the demand the club has generated. Gateshead BC are looking to enter the local league competitions next year. Through the success of Gateshead Badminton Club, Gateshead CBN has applied for £10,000 from Sport England to launch a junior club connected with the senior club called Gateshead Geckos. As well using the funding to establish a junior club, the funding also allows for an extensive school programme as well to allow for good coverage across the Borough.

Hartlepool Community Badminton Network Hartlepool Community Badminton Network successfully applied for a £10,000 grant from the Hartlepool Community Activity Network to deliver a extensive Badminton for Better Health programme, alongside partners Age UK, MIND and Parkinson UK. This programme will now be delivered in September 2012

by our newly appointed Regional Coach . Hartlepool Sixth Form College, in partnership with Hartlepool Community Badmin-ton Network is launching a new Rackets Academy. Integrating coaching into stu-dent’s timetable, strength and conditioning training, and pathways to Teesside Performance Centre, this is a fantastic development for the young people in Hartle-pool.

Strengthening the formation of a Rackets Academy at H6FC, is the move of Brierton Community Badminton Club to be based within the Sixth Form, and to be renamed Hartlepool Badminton Club. The Premier Club’s decision to move should ensure that they receive a steady flow of players into the club, ensuring sustainability in the coming years. With stu-dents entering the clubs environment, they will benefit by not only having access to a Premier Club but also access to the pathway to Teesside Performance Centre.

Stockton on Tees Community Badminton Network Teesside University has been a successful partner of the CBN, with Higher Education Officer Emily having an impact of increasing partici-pation through the Universities various programmes. We are pleased to announce that Emily will remain in her position for 2012/2013 with a focus on engaging the community to use the facilities and programmes at Teesside further.

Tees Valley School Games have run successfully throughout the year, culminating in the final School Games festivals last week. This was a fantastic display of the talent and breadth of sport that is delivered in schools across the Tees Valley.

Queen’s Campus Sports Centre are adopting an unusual badminton programme: Raveminton. Taking place on Thursday 26th July 6pm—8pm at Queen’s Campus, this event is eagerly anticipation. Lights Off, Music On—this UV badminton event will hopefully bring new people to playing our sport in the most unusual of ways. So if you can head down, grab your glow sticks and come play some badminton. If successful this programme may be-coming to a leisure centre near you!
