Executive Summary

This report summarizes the five events staged by five of the Project Partners until

30.06.2017. Due to strategical reasons and to avoid overlapping of events, the other

partners decided to host those events at a later stage of the project.

The participants were mainly SMEs due to the objective to inform them about the Smart

Space project and Industry 4.0 generally and further to support them in their digitalization

process. In total, 154 SME’s around France, Germany, Italy and Slovenia participated.

The general aim to raise awareness by presenting technologies, ideas and concepts of

Industry 4.0 was successful. Companies were able to learn about next steps as well as see

demonstrations and best practice examples of Industry 4.0 to see the impact and benefit of

the implementation.

Contacts for next steps in Smart Space as well as cooperation possibilities with institutions

were created to support the implementation of Digital Technologies.

In general the hosting of regional events can be seen as a success to help SME’s with their

digitalization process. Smart Space has been able to raise awareness as well as an interest in

technologies and their implementation.

1. Introduction

The superior aim is to improve the competitiveness of SMEs in the Alpine Space with the

help of Smart Technologies.

There for, as one of the first activities both an analysis of SMEs’ needs and awareness

campaigns with regional events opened to all SMEs are developed. These increase the

companies’ knowledge on digital technology potentialities, the added value for their

innovation processes and the entrepreneurial opportunities from their application. The

online survey collects information on SMEs’ needs, checks SMEs’ attitude to smart

technologies and the involvement within the project with a special focus on the selected

industrial sectors.

2. Objective of investigation/objective of the deliverable

As part of the activity on “Smart Technologies to improve AS SMEs competitiveness”

(A.T1.2), the objective of this delivery is to

- Summarize awareness events

- Promote Smart Space in Public

3. Applied approach/methodology adopted

Regional events addressed to SMEs to promote the opportunities from digital technologies

With the support of Clusters and Intermediaries, SMEs will be invited to awareness events

on smart technologies with special focus on the manufacturing sectors, in view to increase

the overall knowledge on digital technologies by SMEs.

4. Results

Until the 30th of June 2017 the Project Partners organized and staged five events in their

respective regions. In this way, they were able to provide substantial support for numerous

companies in the Alpine Space.

The following subchapters are each designated to one of the events and are arranged

according to the responsible PPs.

4.1 PP01: Enterprise and Digital Revolution (27.04.2017)

The Chamber of Commerce of Venice Rovigo Delta Lagunare staged the event “Enterprises

and Digital Revolution: national roadmap and comparing experiences”. The 10 attending

participants were representatives of SMEs of the region.

The main content were parallel thematic sessions of round tables with the three topics:

creative industry, innovation tools for the agrifood sector and smart manufacturing.

After a general introduction of Industry 4.0 and the Smart Space project, the potential of

digital technologies was shown with the aid of concrete examples. The thematic workshop

was held by three speakers with the dual objective to enhance the awareness about the

impact of Industry 4.0 on enterprises. It was demonstrated by means of benchmarking

activities, the presentation of success cases, storytelling and informing enterprises on

international opportunities and services.

The three speakers were:

• Stefano Miotto, Politecnico della Calzatura of Creative Industry

• Roberto Santolamazza, T2i Technology transfer and innovation, subsidiary company

of Venetians CCIAA, Digital innovation Hub.

• Prof. Paolo Bariani, Te. Si. Laboratory of Padua University Venice Confindustria

Metrolpolitan Area of Venice and Rovigo, Smart Manufacturing & Industry 4.0

Feedback on the event was obtained by a questionnaire. It was predominantly positive:

The competence of the speakers, the clear exposition of facts and the subject interest of the

speakers were received favourably. The presentation of the Smart Space Project and the

4.2 PP03: SEPEM (26.04.2017)

The 23 participants of this event on Industry 4.0 and digitalisation in PACA (Provence Alpes

Cote D’Azur) in Avignon were SMEs as well as intermediaries and authorities.

Discussed contents were:

• What is Industry 4.0?

• Presentation of the “tools” available for SMEs to have a diagnosis and to help them

to understand and implement their process steps towards Industry 4.0

• Presentation of solution providers to implement some technological bricks

• Explanation of the next steps to identify some solution providers for Industry 4.0

• Discussion about SME needs

The result of the discussed points and sharing good practices is a better understanding of

the contents of Industry 4.0. This makes it easier for SMEs to take action, follow the steps

and start into a future along the lines of digitalisation.

21 SMEs participated in the Business Dialogue: “Digital Revolution – Opportunities and

Risks” hosted by bwcon.

The contents were thematic lectures on raising awareness of digitalization and Industry 4.0.

Internet of Things, Cloud Computing and Industry 4.0 - the age of digitization. This change is

accompanied by daily changes. This creates opportunities and risks for the society and the

economy. In order to sensitize SMEs to the topics of digitalization three speakers exclusively

gave a lecture to the invited SMEs:

• Valentina Grillea, bwcon GmbH, presentation of the EU project “Smart Space”

• Thomas Firnkorn, T&T Cloud Crowding Solutions GmbH, „Business as a Service –

Chances for the Baden-Wuerttemberg region”

• Thomas Widmann, WidasConcepts IT Consulting GmbH, „IoT erodes the Identity of

the End User”

The feedback from the participants was positive. The participants showed great interest in

the project Smart Space and the selected speakers and their lectures.

The interest in this topic is huge and further events are welcome.

The next Step is to connect with interested participants. The interest in further topics on the

subject of industry 4.0 results in the planning of further events and the creation of synergies

with other projects at European level on this topic.

The contact with interested SMEs can be used for further steps in the Smart Space project.

They are eager to participate in activities like the online survey or to gain additional

knowledge about technologies and services and to push their individual development.

The aim of the event is to show some of the real concrete success case of digitization and to

provide companies with some of the available opportunities to support their digitization

process.

Small and Medium Enterprises showed their interest in being informed about existing

opportunities to support the implementation of digital technologies in their processes and

products. Therefore, the next step will be to discuss available solutions and applications to

support the transition to an intelligent factory.

Giving SMEs an overview of I4.0 and introducing an AS DIH platform is of great use for the

Smart Space project.

4.5 PP08: University Labs

and Digitalisation (26.06.2017)

This event took place at the UAS Rosenheim. The participants were primarily SMEs and

partially intermediaries, 22 of them were external and about 10 internal.

The aim was to show actions towards digitalization at the University Rosenheim.

The participants were very interested in technologies, cooperation possibilities and

networking with professors. The feedback of the companies was in overall positive. Many

ideas were generated and exchange possibilities between SMEs were used. Additionally, the

SMEs did also realize the University as a cooperation partner.

The aim is to open up the University each semester in a similar format and provide

possibilities of cooperation and generate new ideas for SMEs. So the next step for the

individual SMEs is to start cooperation projects with the University.

The event can be seen as a successful sensibility and awareness rising action because a

demonstration of technologies on neutral ground is very useful and a helpful input for SMEs.

Furthermore, ideas and implementation possibilities of Digital Technologies were generated

and discussed.

5. Evaluation transnational added value

Such regional events are of great value for the respective SMEs. But also other regions can

benefit from these actions by getting an overview of the covered topics and the results.

Further, successfully arranged events with delighted and encouraged participants in turn

incite other organisations to host similar events on I4.0 to push the development in their

region.
