Af-ter Caesar’s Helvetian victoryhe remains in Gaul to defeat aGerman king encroaching onCeltic lands. Yet asGallic tribesresent the presence of Romanlegions, talk of rebellion flaresandculminates in amassacreofRomanmerchants. A rebel lea-der emerges in the person ofVercingetorix.With ten legionsin Gaul, Caesar establishes achain of camps, pacifies sometribes, and defeats others, butan attack on Vercingetorix’sstronghold of Gergovia fails.Rather than follow up his vic-tory, the king retreats to a fort-ress atAlesia. Caesar surroundsthe stronghold with deadlyground obstacles and twin de-fensive walls. In a brutal siege,Roman tactics defeatVercinge-torix.He surrenders and is sentto Rome for execution. InfatuatedwithApsa, she kills Arvos in a rapeattempt. Triccos tries the slavewoman for murder, but she isexonerated. When Alberix re-fuses to join the rebellion, Ver-cingetorixmutilates andexpelshim from his camp. The kingrepulses Caesar’s attack onGergovia, yet retreats toAlesia,After a month-long Romansiege, Vercingetorix surren-ders. Assigned to escort theking to Rome with Lucius, Al-berix rescues his mother andaunt fromWermaros. AtRome,Briga andApsa are abducted ina failed plot to free Vercingeto-rix.WhileAlberix is away,Ger-manic warriors raid a settle-ment rising on the site of hisfather’s destroyed village. A ri-val candidate accuses him ofcollusion with the enemy, buthe is cleared and elected a ma-gistrate realizing his dream asforetold, fifteenyears earlier, onthe CelticWheel of Life.

Sometimes the clearest exitfromabuse is exile. It’s away tomake a new start. Fleeing thecomforts of home in the hopesof a safer life abroad is not a fre-quently publicized theme, be-cause, initially, at least, it’s amatterof survival. For awomanto gather together whateverthings she can carry anddisap-pear into the night for fear ofbodilyharmshould she tell herspouse she’s leaving is a doublebind at best. On the one hand,she must behave like a thief inthe night for her own protec-tion. On the other hand, she isdenied the natural impulse tobehave like amature adult andtalk about what’s going on toclear the air, because experi-ence has taught her that withsome people, there can be nodiscussion. Well-intentionedattempts atnegotiationend in aone-sided escalation thatstrikes fear in the heart.
The Write to Heal Abuse Anthology is currently opening a Call For Submissions for

finding new freedom after decisively ending the pattern of abusive relationships. One of
the greatest gifts of taking the initiative to leave abusive patterns behind is learning to

Cambridge Science Festival
Mid-April means it’s carnivaltime in Cambridge, with the
annual Science Festival. As thehomeofbothMITandHarvard,as well as many other worldclass research institutions,Cambridge is the perfect place
tohost sucha fascinating event.Naturally, swissnex Boston
– the world’s first science con-sulate –didn’tmiss out and fea-tured a true highlight at thisyear’s Cambridge Science Fes-tival. Together with University
of Basel, swissnex Boston pre-sented thegianthumancell, aninflatable model of a humanwhite blood cell magnified300’000 times larger than a
normal sized cell to childrenandadults of all ages.Hundredsof people from the communitycame to experience the attrac-tion, on what was a beautifulspring day. Visitors could walkinto the Giant Cell and explorethe details of its interior – andthat’s not somethingyoucandoevery day!
The cell was jointly produ-ced by Interpharma and theUniversity of Basel (which cele-brated its 555th anniversarythis year!). WisconsinMummenschanzA sellout crowd at the Sharon Lynn Wilson Center for the Arts gave a standingovation to Switzerland based art troupe “Mummenschanz”.FlorianaFrassetto (founder),GiovanniColombo,RaffaelaMattioli andJakob Benson gave a superb collection of performances onMarch 21,2015 at this prestigious andwonderful gemof a theatre in Brookfield,Wisconsin.
Itwas adazzling80minute show full of unexpectedvisual effects;in flight and flickering illuminated objects and imaginative beingsmoving throughblack space.Disembodiedneon limbsdancing in airfollowed by the playful, clever and compassionate, earth bound“slinky man” contrasted famously to the plump, stage dominating“silkies”. Bold geometric colors,morph-able silk spheres andundula-ting shapes punctuatedwithhuman like personalities surprised, de-lighted and thrilled the audience (especially the young ones).
The troupe “Mummenschanz” have been on tour through theNorth American Continent since October 2014, their first time backin the Midwest since 2002. Unique for combining classical and newideas in their performance art, the dynamics of “push-pull”, surrea-listic “I-love you-neither” and “who loseswins” is as enduring as ever.In a push button world that is ever more hooked in with electronicmedia, live performance is asmagical as ever! Next, they travel toMi-

Washington DCSwiss Benevolent SocietyTheSwissBenevolent SocietyofWashington (SBS) is celebratingits 150thAnniversary this year.Founded in 1865, it is the oldestSwiss organization inWashing-ton.
The Washington SBS’s solemission was, and continues tobe, to help Swiss in need. Itwasestablished as a membershiporganizationwith yearly dues of$3.00 (45 in today’s Dollars). In some cases travel assistance was ex-tended to individuals who for various reasons had to return to Swit-zerland without having sufficient funds. Others needed short-termfinancial assistance,while someelderly and sickwerehelpedwithme-dical anddental expenses, aswell as grocery gift cards. Inmany casesa loanwas given, with the expectation that themoneywould be paidback, but at times some loanswere forgiven.
In 1980 the membership, of around 100, voted to change from amembership organization to an entity managed by a Board of Trus-tees. This has been the structure ever since. Boardmembers are cho-sen from other Washington-based Swiss organizations. That sameyear a scholarship program was initiated to help Swiss and de-scendants of Swisswith the ever-increasing cost of college education.Applicants must be residents of the Washington, DC MetropolitanArea, be a Swiss national or have at least one grandparent who is orwas a Swiss citizen.
The2014award recipientswere:NoelleBrahimi, The2014MoniqueFürst-Price Honorary Scholarship (Virginia Tech Graduate School);EmilyBiggs (WestVirginiaWesleyanCollege); JoelCox, ShannonHalland Andrea Zemp (allUniversity of Mary-land).
For the secondyear in a row, in a jointeffort by the SwissClub of Washingtonand the SBS, silent andlive auctions tookplace at the traditionalSwiss Club Raclettedinner, held at theSwiss Embassy. Many Swiss items were auctioned, including 2 SwissRail passesdonatedby the Swiss TouristOffice, vacation rentals, pain-tings, goodies donated by the Swiss Bakery andmuchmore. The verylively support by the attendees made for a fun, as well as profitableeveningbenefiting the SBS scholarshipprogram.TheSBSBoardofDi-rectors extends its sincerest appreciation to the Swiss Club of Wa-shington, the Stauffacherin and their members for their continuedsupport.

The cooperation ofDonald Tritt,who accompanied andadvised the team for days, and the input of Leo Schelbert, both of theSwiss American Historical Society, are gratefully acknowledged.
A re-activated “Swiss Picnic” ofAugust First 2015, Switzerland’s na-tional holiday, follows next. Furthersteps are planned such asmutual vi-sits that aim to strengthen ties bet-ween descendants of Louisville im-migrants andEinsiedeln, the townoftheir origin.
