E ducation is defined as the process involving
gaining of knowledge and becoming educated.
Years ago in ancient Greece, Sokotis said education
is about expressing what is already within the
student. Likewise, this parallels Swami’s definition
of Educare which dates back in time to the Latin
word Educere (pronounced educaré) to bring out
from within. Spiritual
education originates from
our heart and can be shared
with others. Educare is
latent and pertains to the
human heart.
Bhagawan Baba did not
have a mission statement
when He declared himself as
an Avatar. Instead, He
began the new role with a
melodious bhajan titled
Manasa Bhajare Guru
Charanam. Since Atma
equals God and the whole of
creation came from the
Atma, then both God and
nature are within each one of us. Spiritual
knowledge and knowledge about nature is already
latent within us waiting to be expressed.
We can see
that babies
learn by
absorbing
and
observing.
Nature is
observed by using senses. Assisted informal
learning is seen by a child who accompanies the
mother. Education is imparted by the mother. The
mother assists the child in order to bring out the
latent capabilities required for the child to
blossom.
In early life, Swami says, every child learns first
from the mother. Later, the
father enrols the child in
school where the teacher
takes over. The knowledge
you gain from nature must
be connected to the creator
or the Atma within so that
the knowledge is put to
proper use. God’s presence
within each one of us means
that spiritual knowledge is
already within the individual.
Spiritual ignorance (Agyana)
can prevent wisdom from
manifesting itself. Thus, the
Guru enlightens the student
or disciple on spiritual
cleansing procedures.
The duty of the Guru is to help the student or
disciple remove Agyana. God as Guru is different
from all worldly Gurus. The presence of the avatar
enables man to purify himself and also light the
lamp within. Swami’s divine presence, proximity
and genuine smile fills many hearts with love that
no Guru on earth can accomplish. Only the Avatar
can light the lamp of love within us. The Avatar
motivates us to engage in bhajans and above all,
express pure love.
Help Ever Hurt Never
THE END OF WISDOM IS
FREEDOM.
THE END OF CULTURE IS
PERFECTION.
THE END OF KNOWLEDGE IS
LOVE.
THE END OF EDUCATION IS
CHARACTER

Love All Serve All
I t was my 6th visit to Puttaparthi and 2nd family trip. It was already planned as I had to attend the
convocation ceremony of my elder daughter, Pooja Ghoora at Prashanti Nilayam. I reached there on the
18th of November and the crowd was overwhelming as if when Baba was physically present. All went
smoothly and I really enjoyed the spiritual atmosphere prevailing there. Staying at Prasanthi, I didn’t
realise about time, date and day. I totally forgot about the routine chores which I usually do in Mauritius.
It’s really Heaven on Earth. I was so engrossed in the blissful atmosphere of Prasanthi that it was hard to
leave it and go. I was somewhat disappointed when I had to leave for Mumbai then Shirdi after the 2
weeks spent there. Usually when I go to Puttaparthi , it would be my last destination but this time it was
not the case. After Darshan at Shirdi , I had to join a Mauritian group which was on a tour in India then
eventually home. The day I had to leave for Mumbai, I prayed to Swami to just take care of my trip
because as usual I wanted to go home straight away from Puttaparthi fully recharged .
After 3 days spent at Shirdi and Mumbai, I really don’t know how I landed in Puttaparthi again. May be
Swami wanted it this way. I stayed 10 more days there. I really thank Swami for giving me another
opportunity to come to His abode. And again it was so blissful. As usual, before leaving, I asked Swami to
give us permission to do so and in my mind I was wondering how would I know if Swami is responding?
That day, after lunch I went in the
room for packing and rested for a
while with this thought still in my
mind. When I got up, I went
downstairs and I generally do
pranams to Swami before leaving
our accommodation block. To my
surprise, on Swami's picture kept on
the ground floor altar, vibhuti was
manifested! So my doubt was
cleared that Baba does respond to
our prayers. Swami knows what’s in
our mind. If we ask Him with a pure heart, He will eventually listen to us.

Service to Man is Service to GOD
A painter by profession, Ali was a very religious man. He could
miss out on anything, but not his Namaaz. He was at the mosque
each day at the appointed hour. He always said that his life was
devoted to Allah and it would not be completed until he had offered
his prayers. Everyone could miss their prayers sometimes, but not Ali.
In fact since he was always in time, he would get the same place to sit
and pray. Those who visited the mosque frequently considered the
place ‘reserved for Ali’. Even if they came early, they would leave it
for him. This went on from day to day and month to month. Twenty years went by. Everyone was impressed
with Ali’s regularity and dedication. When they spoke of Ali, they always said that he was a true son of Allah.
Nobody could be as devoted as he was.
One day as he sat down in the mosque ready to pray along with hundreds of devotees, suddenly a celestial
voice spoke: “Ali, you have been offering prayers for twenty years. None of them
have been accepted by Allah”. The voice was loud and clear and everybody heard
it. People were shocked. Here was a man so dedicated to Allah, yet after twenty
long years all his prayers were rebuffed. Where did they, who offered prayers
occasionally, stand? If Ali’s prayers were rejected, surely they stood no chance. All
the devotees felt sorry for Ali. If he had heard the celestial voice, he would die of
shock.
Everybody’s gaze was now shifted to Ali. They felt he would be weeping in
remorse. But much to their surprise, Ali was dancing with happiness and
repeatedly saying: “Thank you, Allah! Thank you, Allah!” Surely he had gone mad because of the shock,
everybody thought. Not wanting to disturb him, they let him dance. In a few minutes when he stopped, they
were shocked to see great happiness on his face. There was not the slightest resentment that his prayers
were not accepted.
“Aren’t you sorry that your prayers were rejected Ali?” one of them asked. “What are you so happy about?”.
“So what if my prayers have not been accepted?” Ali said humbly. “I never asked for anything in particular. I
am happy that my prayers reached heaven. At least there is somebody who is recording my prayers for the
past twenty years”.
“Ali is a true devotee”, an elderly devotee said. “He is a content man. He does not pray to ask God for
anything. His prayers are in gratitude. He is grateful for the happiness God has given him. It is this happiness
that sustains his devotion to God. The celestial voice
simply tried to test his devotion and Ali has passed
most honourably”.

Learn to Adapt, Adjust & Accommodate
I n 2012, when I was at
His Divine Lotus Feet, I never
imagine that in His formless
state, the Omniscient Lord
will be more Loving and
Compassionate. Granting admission to Manjula in His
University has crystallized our being in His Darbar for the
graduation ceremony. Thus, we were invited to His 90th
birthday, alongside to be part and parcel of this big event:
World Conference, which is held every five years.
A dedicated team led by our brothers and sisters from South
Africa together with their Mauritian counterparts completed
the Registration formalities, distributing accommodation and
the Conference pack. In the first instance, the invisible
Director of the events gave His blessings for the event by
vibhuti materializing on a calendar in room A 22 of N7. The
good planning spared the delegates the hassle of wasting
time. As usual, the Holy Father has taken care of His children
by providing free food as from 15th of Nov till the 24th, from
breakfast to dinner. His Love for His children is boundless.
On 24th of Nov 2015, the Mauritian team which was ascribed
the responsibility of registering the attendance using the same
methodology of the PWC, had a last fine tuning exercise led
by Brother Sham under the scrutiny of Brother Nitish Mankoo.
A palpable tension was there due to the importance of the
event and the divine personalities attending. But when you
surrender at His Lotus Feet, He does it all finely to give joy to
His Beloved children.
On 25th Dec, we were up on our feet at 5 am and left North 7
block by bus to the Auditorium of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute
of Higher Learning. The day started with auspiciousness with
surrender prayer to the Lord to make us worthy instruments.
As from 7 am, the delegates stated to converge to the venue.
The registration process started well and some of the
delegates were flabbergasted by the use to such a technology
to monitor attendance. Some even envisaged to take back
home this method to improve the professional image of the
Organisation. However, everything didn’t unfold as per plan.
Brother Nitish Mankoo had to attend these petty mishaps and
mended things accordingly.
The first exercise instilled confidence in the whole team and
was much appreciated. After lunch the same exercise was
carried out and was pursued on the following two days.
Out of 900 registered delegates, about 750 were in
attendance on the first day. Several high calibres speakers
addressed the delegates, just to mention a few: Revered Br N.
Reddy, International Chairman, Brother Suresh Govind,
National Youth Coordinators of UK, Australia ….
After the introductory addresses in the morning, workshops
were held in the International Indoor Stadium, which is a
masterpiece of architecture for a spiritual based service
Organisation. Every minute detail was taken into
consideration to make the event memorable. The breakfast
and lunch were nice and tasty. The Conference concluded
with expose of personal experiences from devotees
worldwide. From this exercise, we can gauged the impact and
influence Swami had o a global level to raise man to the
Divine.
The broad lines of the Resolutions were spelt out in the Sai
Koolwant Hall during evening Darshan on the 27th of Dec.
Once more, the Loving Father gave us dinner for the three
days of the conference at the Western canteen. What a
heavenly time in His Darbar.
Dear Lord, words cannot express our Gratitude to showering
so much Love on all of us. On their behalf and all our Brothers
and Sisters in Mauritius, we tell you in unison a big: THANK
YOU SWAMI – WE LOVE YOU VERY MUCH.
Awaiting to be at your Darbar for YOUTH FESTIVAL in July
2016.

P ractice of Yoga helps for the slow and regulated
respiration. To achieve this, the sages of earlier years
lived in the forests. They went to forests for no other
reason than to achieve purity of speech and control of
senses. How was their practice of meditation? The first
component is Dharana (keeping the mind steady,
concentrating the mind on a particular object). Twelve
Dharanas constitute a Dhyana (contemplation). Twelve
such Dhyanas constitute Samadhi (meditation). What is
Dharana? Looking at an object continuously with
concentration for 12 seconds with the mind focused on
it is called Dharana. Practice looking at
a photo or an object or an idol for 12
seconds. Without a wavering mind,
concentrate only on that object. This
is only for 12 seconds, not a very long
duration. Such practice (Dharana)
forms the basis for Dhyana. Holding
the vision on an object for 12 seconds
is called Dharana.
After Dharana comes Dhyana. Twelve
such Dharanas make a Dhyana. This is
12 x 12 = 144 seconds. That means 2
minutes and 24 seconds. When Dharana is practiced
properly, you can reach the state of Dhyana within the
duration of 2 minutes and 24 seconds. Twelve such
Dhyanas make a Samadhi. This is 12 x 144 = 28 minutes
and 48 seconds. This is not one hour or one day or
months together. This period of 28 minutes and 48
seconds is Samadhi. Such discipline was followed by the
sages of those days. This discipline was not mentioned
either in the scriptures or by any scholar. To attain this,
you have to first start with Dharana. Practice this
Dharana for 12 seconds daily. This is essential for the
students. Godly men like Aurobindo and Ramana
Maharshi practiced this kind of meditation. Ramana
Maharshi used to concentrate on a dot. He used to look
at it steadily for 12 seconds. If you practice the Dharana
12 times, it becomes one Dhyana. That is for 2 minutes
and 24 seconds. You put the thermometer inside the
mouth for 2 minutes to measure the temperature. Can’t
you concentrate on an object for 2 minutes? If you keep
on practicing this for more and more time, you attain
the state of Samadhi. What is the meaning of Samadhi?
People think that the Samadhi is something like a state
of unconsciousness or super-consciousness. This is not
consciousness of any kind. What people have is
hysteria. What does true Samadhi mean? That state
where there is equanimity between dualities is called
Samadhi. To accept with equal mindedness happiness
and pain, gain and loss, praise and abuse, heat and cold
is true Samadhi. This is the result of
true Dhyana.
Students! Today being an auspicious
day, start practicing this right away.
With this you develop sharpness in
what you study and what you think. I
too did not disclose this to any one
earlier. There are various other
procedures in this practice. There are
procedures for concentrating the
mind and the posture in which one
has to sit to concentrate for 12
seconds. I shall tell those separately to all those who are
interested in all that. Meditation is simple. To attain the
state of Samadhi is still simpler. But because of lack of
knowledge about the procedure, people are facing
troubles in following that path. You are under the
impression that meditation is all about sitting in the
lotus posture. That is not true meditation. You sit steady.
But mind wanders all around. People get diverted when
a mosquito flies in front of the nose. Meditation gets
disturbed. When the man sits steady these mosquitoes
also become sharp. Even if you drive them away, they
come back and keep disturbing you. You drive them
away once again, with much force the second time, third
time you get angry, fourth time you try killing them! This
happens often in Dhyana of these days. All this is not
Dhyana.
Truth is God, Speak The Truth

There is a subtle principle in meditation. That is the power. That is Yoga. As said by the earlier student speaker, it is
that state of mind where you are not excited; you are at peace and calmness. You have to achieve peace only
through patience and forbearance. You can attain peace only through Dharana. You gain control over the senses.
You develop pure thoughts and feelings. With pure thoughts you attain Godliness. Hence it is said in Bhagavad
Gita:
Shreyohi Jnanamabhyasaat, Jnanaat Dhyanam Vishishyate
Dhyanaat Karma Phala Tyagaha, Tyagaat Shanti Nirantaram
Better indeed is knowledge than practice.
Better than knowledge is meditation on God.
But better than meditation is renunciation of the desire for the fruits of action.
For thereafter follows peace unendingly.
What we want is peace. Today our meditation is confined to our room of worship. The moment we step out of that
room, we start abusing and arguing with people. ‘Satatam Yoginaha’, you have to be in the state of Yoga all the
time. This does not mean abstaining from worldly activities. You should study well. You should discharge your
responsibilities. Spirituality is no obstacle to all this. In all your worldly pursuits, concentration (Dharana) is
essential. Only then, such practice transforms into true meditation. Contemplating on something is meditation.
We see often in day-to-day activities, when something is being said, a few people pay no attention to it. We ask
them as to what they are contemplating on. What is meant by meditation? Contemplating on something is
meditation. We have to think only of the same thing or person. That is what is called Saalokya (being in the world
of something else), living in one’s own world of thoughts.
Saalokyam means thinking about one’s own aspirations, thinking about whatever you want, thinking about the
person whom you want. That is Saalokyam. In the word Saalokyam, ‘Saa’ means true nature. That is Brahman. That
is God. This pertains to omnipotence of God. But out of ignorance, you believe that this is yours and that is his. But
in reality, nothing is yours in the universe. Nothing on this earth is yours. Only one that exists is yours and that is
the Atma. That alone is you. You can’t say
that the Atma is yours. In fact, the Atma is
you yourself. This authority and
experience comes to you only through
Dhyana. But today, there are various
practices observed in the name of Dhyana.
All these are to achieve mean ends.
Divinity can’t be attained through these
practices. First of all, the turbulence of the
mind has to be subdued. Sitting in the
lotus posture and closing the eyes is being
considered as Dhyana these days. This is
not Dhyana. This is a disease.

Students! First of all you have to develop the grasping
power, concentration (Dharana). Select an object of your
choice or a form of your interest or take a material
object of your liking. Look at that object without
wavering mind for 12 seconds continuously. As I told you
earlier, there is another method of meditation by
turning your vision inside. As you close your eyes, you
can observe a black dot which is stable between your
eyebrows. As you try to concentrate on it, you feel it
wanders away from you. Only when the dot is contained
to that place between your eyebrows, meditation is
possible for you. That is true meditation. That very dot is
the knowledge embedded in ignorance, pure knowledge
in the knowledge, the Divine spark
present in the purest of knowledge.
If you ask Me, where exactly it is
present, I will say, from turmoil
comes peace, from peace glittering
light and from that light emanates
the spark of Divinity. Then you
understand that this attribute of
Divinity, the Divine spark shows
itself only through turmoil.
Now when is Dharana supposed to
be practiced? Time is divided as per
the three Gunas (attributes) –
Satva,Rajas and Tamas. The earth
has the three attributes – Satva, Rajas and Tamas. Air
that is completely Satvic, goes away from earth as
vapour. Liquid has Rajasic quality. Something that has
the nature of moving all the time (activity) is said to be
Rajasic. Anything that is motionless is said to be having
a Tamasic nature. Physics is Tamasic. Chemistry is
Rajasic. The attribute that is in relation to both these is
Satvic nature. Bioscience is Satvic nature. Thus there is
an attribute pertaining to each of these subjects.
Likewise there is classification in the day based on the
three gunas. The time from 8 pm to 4 am is Tamasic in
nature. Even the birds and beasts sleep during this
time. This is considered as the time of devils! This is the
most favourable time for demons. For all those
activities pertaining to Tamasic nature it is favourable
time. The time from morning 8 am to 4 pm is Rajasic in
nature. Everyone gets engrossed in their own activities.
All the employees and officers work in their offices
between 8 am and 4 pm. That span of 8 hours is Rajasic
in nature. 4 am to 8 am is Satvic and 4 pm to 8 pm is
Satvic. Thus 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the
evening, total 8 hours is Satvic. Satvic time starts from
4 o’clock in the morning. You all should be awake by
then. You have to start your spiritual practice or studies
in that time. Then the state of mind is pure. That is the
time for pious deeds. You should not sleep during that
time. You don’t need to have bath. Your senses will be
calm during that time. They
would have taken rest till then.
During that state of rest of the
senses whatever you think of
God, it will get ingrained into you.
You recollect the forgotten things.
You have to start your prayers
during that Satvic time. Thinking
who will get up at 4 o’clock and 5
o’clock, many may get up at 8
o’clock. Elsewhere, students get
up at 9 o’clock and go to school
without even washing their face.
They are brothers of
Kumbhakarna (brother of Ravana
in the epic Ramayana) and no one else! Get up at 4 am
and finish all your morning ablutions. Wash your face
and sit silently in happiness. Wash your face so that
you will not feel sleepy. If you remember these subtle
aspects, meditation becomes easy for you. Same is
the case in the evening also. After coming back from
college, you have time from 4 pm to 8 pm. Play
games. At around 6 pm, wash your hands and legs and
sit silently for 5 minutes at least. Dhyana is only for a
period of two minutes and 24 seconds. You don’t
need to sit for hours together. As you practice this,
you become more and more pure. You try this and
your happiness, your luster and your purity will
improve significantly.

These days, young boys and girls are spending their energy in evil and wicked thoughts. Hence their faces appear
diseased. There has to be brilliance or glow on students’ faces. Purity is the reason for brilliance. If there is purity
within, your faces will be glowing. What is the reason for you being so dull? The nature of your thoughts alone is
the reason. Impurity is the main reason. Hence cultivate purity. As you develop purity, you become young. Not
even a single disease enters your body. Try and achieve this.
