• This site is located in NW Peloponnisos and occupies a coastal zone of about 22 km in length and with an average width of 1500 m. It is a compound coastal ecosystem, that includes the lagoons of Prokopos and Kalogria (or PAPPAS) the Lamia marshes, as well as the forest of Strofilia The Kotyhi – Strofylia area has been recognized as a Wetland of International Importance, and has been protected under the Ramsar Convention since 1974. Additionally, five (5) sections within the same area, have been identified as Natura 2000 sites, according to the European Directives 2009/147/EC and 92/43/EC, and have been included within the European NATURA 2000 network since 1998. More specifically, there are 2 Special Protection Areas for Birds and 3 Sites of Community Importance.

• Threats :Poaching is one of the most serious threats on avifauna, as there is lack of law enforcement. Increased disturbance is also a potential threat as well as the continuous urbanization. Destruction of nests of terns and other ground nesters by grazing cattle is also a serious threat.

• Mt. Chelmos is located in Northern Peloponnisos and is characterized by a variety of geological substrata and soil types (conglomerates, limestones of Olonos-Pindos zone, flysh). The main elements of its "wild" landscape include: wellforested slopes of the Meso- and Supra-Mediterranean vegetation zone with Abies cephalonica and Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana forests, steep calcareous cliffs, the Mavrolimni lake (2050 m) of glacier origin (this is the only "alpine" lake of Peloponnisos) and the impressive Styx valley associated with a small, wet cave and a waterfall at its base.

• Threats: Overgrazing, expanding road networks and hunting are the main human activities which constitute threats for the ecologically significant habitats and in general of the mountainous landscape of Chelmos. The operation of the ski centre affects the mountainous ecosystems of Chelmos (plants, animals and soils).Taking into account this fact and also the illegal hunting and overgrazing one understands the pressures acting on the very important ecosystems and landscape of Mt. Chelmos. Vouraikos river suffers from household and industrial waste disposal, while a large part of the forests along its route was burnt recently.

DELTA ACHELOOU, LIMNOTHALASSA MESOLONGIOU - AITOLIKOU, EKVOLES EVINOU, NISOI ECHINADES,

NISOS PETALAS• The Messolonghi-Aitoliko lagons complex is located in the north part

of the Gulf of Patras in the central west coast of Greece. It is one of the most important Mediterranean lagoons. It is a shallow area of 150 km2, extended between the Acheloos and Evinos rivers. It is protected by the Ramsar Convention and it is also included in the Natura 2000 network. The largest portion is the Kentriki Limnothalassa ("central lagoon") a shallow sea separated from the Gulf of Patras and the Ionian Sea by a chain of sand islands and is characterized as open type lagoon. To the north, the Aitoliko lagoon is connected to the central lagoon by a narrow “neck” and resembles a deep lake (depth 28 m) rather than a lagoon. The Anatoliki Klisova, Dytiki Klisova, as well as the western lagoons of the complex, as closed type lagoons. These communicate with the sea along channels and receives fresh water from the drainage pump system of the region. These lagoons resembles the typical lagoons of north Italy where ‘’vallicultura’’ (lagoon aquaculture) is practiced.

Threats: human activities anoxic crises in the lagoons of Etoliko and East Klissova

Environmental Problems we face in our Region

• Lack of a socio-economic strategic plan for the development of the protected areas

• Problems that occur from human activities nearby the Natura 2000 sites

• Insufficient measures for the monitoring, the protection and the conservation of biodiversity

• Pollution of soil because the use of pesticides and fertilizers in the rural regions

• Erosion of grounds /loss of territorial cover because deforestation and overgrazing

• Degradation of aquifer,in combination with inadequate infrastructures of collection and management of waters.

• Impact of the economic crisis negatively affect the implementation of environmental protection policies.

Page 22: REGION OF WESTERN GREECE European Territorial Cooperation Programme Greece-Italy 2007-2013 Kick-off Meeting of BIG Project, CORFU 28 MARCH 2014

What we expect ….

• Exchange of best practices in sustainable management of sensitive ecosystems

• Create monitoring methods of ecosystems - biodiversity

• Create Reliable Environmental indicators • Integration and standardisation of existing data

on marine, coastal and rural biodiversity• Create innovative tools in managing the

ecosystems• Identification of opportunities and conditions for

sustainable growth in protected sites.• Support the regional observatories on biodiversity

Page 23: REGION OF WESTERN GREECE European Territorial Cooperation Programme Greece-Italy 2007-2013 Kick-off Meeting of BIG Project, CORFU 28 MARCH 2014

Expected results that the project will provide to our Region

• Environmental development and planning in regional level

• Growth of tourism, suitable for protected areas (agro-tourism, eco-tourism, natural tourism)

• Exploiting of specific potential in tourism, culture and natural environment

• Focus on differentiation and development using new technologies, innovative products and services

• Development of cultural heritage and the natural environment

• Drafting proposal for the creation and operational standards of a marine reserve.

• Reinforcement of the effectiveness of administrations and natural resource managers to address threats to biodiversity
