PREPARATION:This piece comes almost ready to paint. Use a soft cloth to remove any dust and grime that may have accumulated during shipping. Should there be any imperfections in the piece that are not part of the design, simply sand and rewipe with a soft cloth. I like to spray the piece before painting with Americana’s Spray Sealer/Finisher #70836.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS:Basecoat as follows:

Santa Red –Base in the inner coat with your #8 shader

Deep Burgundy – Base the outer cape

Santa Red – Base the short cape and the hat

Antique White – Base all of the trim at the bottom of the inner coat, the cuff s, the trim on the short cape and the hat.

Transfer the pattern for the trim that does down the center of the inner coat

Hauser Medium Green – Base the tree with your #6 shader

Lamp Black – Base the gloves and the frame of the lantern including the “x’s” on each side. Also, the line just above the trim at the bottom of the inner coat with your #2 liner

Burnt Umber – Base in the trunk of the tree

Golden Straw – Base in the “light” in the lantern with your #2 shader

DECORATING THE TRIMIncised into the trim in the Antique White trim area is a scroll and heart design. To get this design to stand out we will do the following:

Have a soft, damp sponge available. I recommend that you work about an inch and a half to two inches before moving on to the next section. This will allow time to wipe off the excess paint, clean the sponge, before applying more of the Deep Burgundy.

Deep Burgundy – Using your #8 shader, basecoat between an inch and a half to two inches of the trim. Immediately begin very gently to wipe off with your sponge the excess paint leaving the incised design fi lled with paint. Clean the sponge as needed and re-wipe until the excess paint has been removed…leaving only the incised design showing the Deep Burgundy. Continue this process until all of the trim has been done.

Black Plum – Float a shade next to the trim on the hat, under the hair on the short cape, on the long cape under the short cape on the back, along the front edges of the outer cape next to the inner coat, along the bottom of the outer cape (this long fl oat goes all the way from the bottom of the cape to the short cape at the shoulders.) Pull in some long streaks along the sides and back of the outer cape.

Float a shade along the arms next to the inner coat. On the sleeves next to the heart and scroll trim, along the black line at the bottom of the inner coat.

THE FACEWhite Peach –With your #2 shader base in the face

Graphite – Base in the beard, eyebrows and mustache

Titanium White a touch of Santa Red – Mix these two colors for the cheeks. Drybrush the cheeks, the mouth and tongue.

EYESTitanium White – Base in the eyes (the sclera) with your #18/0 liner

Indian Turquoise – Base in the irises

Lamp Black – Base in the pupils

Burnt Sienna – With your #18/0 liner outline the top of the eyes and add a few wrinkles along the outer edge of each eye.

White – Add a tiny highlight dot to each eye

BEARD, MUSTACHE AND EYEBROWSTitanium White – Using your ¼” comb and following the contour of the beard gently pull in strokes to whit-en the beard. Using the 1/8” comb gently whiten the mustache and the eyebrows using the same technique.

THE TREEHauser Dark Green – Float a shade to separate the branches and under the branches

Titanium White – Add the snow to the tips of the branches of the tree

Glorious Gold – Base in the star on the tree, the trim that goes down the center of the coat, the cuff s of the coat , the brim of the hat, the trim at the edge of the small cape and the scalloped trim near the bottom of the coat .

FINISHING:At this point I sprayed Santa with several coats of Americana’s Spray Sealer/Finisher. I then used a black Ident-a-pen to outline the design down the front of the inner coat.
