The Syrian Plea Many of the poorest and most
vulnerable Syrian refugees
now live in the 6th October
suburb of Cairo. It is in this
clinic that we are pleased to
welcome Dr Eriny Zakaria,
our new team leader. The 6th
October clinic that she leads
is just one example of the way
Refuge-Egypt is able to pro-
vide quality medical services,
to patients who are high risk.
In November 2012, the UN
conducted research amongst
Syrian refugees in Egypt. In it
they identified a strong need
for medical support, specifi-
cally for primary, maternal and
child healthcare. Since this
research emerged, and upon
the request of the UNHCR,
Refuge-Egypt has provided
ante and postnatal services for
all Syrian refugees. This has
been an enormous responsi-
Throughout our history Ref-
uge-Egypt has focused mainly
on meeting the needs of the
African refugee community in
Egypt. However, as the crisis in
Syria continues, we find our-
selves in a unique position to
provide medical aid in response
to a worsening situation there.
As an implementing partner of
the UNHCR, we have been
providing medical and nutri-
tional care for Syrian People of
UNHCR Concern.
There are now over 111,000
UNHCR registered Syrian refu-
gees in Egypt, with thousands
more unregistered and awaiting
registration. Although the Egyp-
tian government has granted
Syrians access to public ser-
vices, Egypt does not have the
capacity to meet the demands
of so many individuals.
bility, but also an encouragement and
a privilege. An incredible 20% of the
16,149 medical clinic consultations
this year have been Syrians.
Due to this tremendous need, and

We thank God for His incredible blessing
in continually providing staple foods, clothing
and blankets to individual refugees and fami-
lies! Our Family Support Team, headed up
by Joshua Lee, continues to see God’s hand
and faithfulness in their holistic programme:
“Refuge Egypt provides a number of different
services to African refugees in Cairo. A large
portion of Refuge-Egypt’s work is in humani-
tarian assistance which seeks to give essen-
tial aid to newly arrived refugees. The hu-
manitarian assistance team acts very much as
the welcoming team of Refuge-Egypt. We
are currently 6 members: the team leader,
receptionist, food store manager, database
operator, and two interviewers. The team
registers new refugee clients, interviews
them, and evaluates whether they are eligible for food or
clothing assistance.
Both UN and non-UN registered African refugees who
meet the criteria are registered with us and can then ac-
cess Refuge-Egypt services, for example a monthly food
bag containing lentils, rice, sugar, powdered milk, and pea-
nut butter. Eligible clients are also able to access our

rise in food prices due to economic and political
instability in Egypt. As a result, Refuge-Egypt’s food
store has come under significant pressure to meet
the rising numbers of registrations and everyday
food prices.
God, however, has been faithful in providing thus far
into the year! Every day brings new challenges, but it
is always a privilege for the humanitarian team to be
able to welcome newly arrived refugees, hear their
stories, and serve them in a tangible way.”
