OverviewConventional refrigerators and freezers are not only unsuit-able for storing flammable materials; they can create poten-tial hazards in a facility. Such units have several compo-nents in their electrical and refrigeration systems that cantrigger explosions of flammable air-vapor mixtures inside theunit or from the immediate surrounding area.

Motors and thermostats are designed to prevent the arcingthat can ignite a flammable air-vapor mixture. In addition, each unit has wiring, splices, thermostats, relays and com-pressor motors safely housed within an explosion-proofenclosure, the construction being suitable for use in Class I,Groups C and D. This means that things like the surfacetemperature of compressors will remain below the flashpoint of any flammable material likely to be found in Class I,Groups C and D locations.

All models have heavy-gauge, rigid, braced-steel construc-tion with a durable enamel finish. Interiors have epoxyenamel or ABS plastic construction. Each unit is insulatedthroughout for energy-efficient operation.

These Lab-Line units will prevent potentially destructiveexplosions in any facility by meeting the standards estab-lished by Underwriters’ Laboratory, Inc., OSHA and NationalFire Protection Association for storage of hazardous materi-als.

Lab-Line Explosion-Proof Refrigerators and Freezers are100% explosion-proof. They also meet National FireProtection Standards as found in Articles 500-501 and pro-vide total protection while storing reagents at or below ambi-ent temperatures.

OverviewThese Lab-Line units will prevent potentially destructiveexplosions in any facility by meeting the standards estab-lished by Underwriters’ Laboratory, Inc., OSHA andNational Fire Protection Association for storage of haz-ardous materials. They also are designed to comply withNational Fire Protection Association Standards Nos. 45and 99, as well as OSHA Article No. CFR1910.308. Lab-Line Flammable Materials Storage Refrigerators/Freezersare manufactured for safe, cold storage of volatile materi-als.

Flammable Material Storage (FMS)Refrigerators/Freezers will prevent an explosion fromoccurring inside the unit. These units have no internalelectrical components that could trigger an explosion ofhazardous materials inside the unit. They are NOTdesigned for use in Class I, Groups C and D environ-ments. For these locations use a Lab-Line Explosion-Proof Refrigerator. However, FMS units are not suitablefor use in Class I, Group C and D environments.

These units are ideal for storing cyclopropane, ethyl ether, ethylene, acetone, alcohol, benzene, butane, gasoline, hexane, lacquer solvent vapors, naphtha, natural gas orpropane along with many other potentially hazardousmaterials. All cabinets have heavy-gauge steel construc-tion with a durable exterior finish of epoxy enamel. A wellinsulated cabinet and tight sealing magnetic door preventair leaks along with helping to lower operating costs. Theinterior is made of porcelain-enameled steel or ABS plas-tic.

If any ques-tions pertaining to electrical safetyarises, please refer to article 501 ofthe National Electrical Code.

How to Seal Killark® Box Conduit with Fiber andSealing Compound to Help Protect AgainstExplosions (Explosion-Proof Units Only):

The purpose of the procedure that follows is to build fiberrope dams on the left and right hubs of the horizontal conduit. The fiber rope damns will surround conduit wiring that ishoused inside the horizontal conduit.

When both the left and right fiber rope dams have beenpressed into place, sealing compound is poured between thetwo and forms into an airtight plug.

All of this is done in order to prevent the very real threat ofgas entering the Killark box and a resulting serious explosion.

After the unit wires have been pulled through the horizontalconduit the following procedure is required:

• Turn power off at the circuit breaker before proceed-ing.

• Place a small amount of sealing compound gran-ules, enclosed, into a clean mixing vessel. Addsmall amounts of water while stirring until a thickpaste is formed, then carefully continue addingsmaller amounts of water until a thick gravy consis-tency is achieved—NOT WATERY. Discard anymaterial that becomes too stiff to use. Neverattempt to restore workability by stirring in morewater.

• Locate silver Killark box, back/top-center of unit.

• Unscrew conduit domed-cover.

Operation

Start-Up ProcedureRotate the control knob clockwise to lower the tempera-ture and counterclockwise raise it.

To check chamber temperature, place a dial thermometeron a shelf in the center of the chamber. Initially, rotate thetemperature control knob to an arbitrary setting. Allowapproximately 2 hours for the temperature to initially stabi-lize. Check the temperature and compare with the dialsetting.

Adjust dial further to reach the desired operating tempera-ture. After chamber initially stabilizes, allow 1/2 to 1 hourfor the chamber temperature to stabilize after subsequenttemperature adjustments.

Because the markings on the dial do not indicate specifictemperatures, use them AS REFERENCE POINTS ONLYfor any future setting of the temperature.

If the room thermostat is turned below 60ºF at night, con-sider setting the temperature control one step colder. Itshould be left at this setting for the nighttime period;return temperature control to original setting when theroom thermostat is returned to its normal setting.

Restart ProcedureIf unit is unplugged or turned off, allow 3 minutes beforerestarting or plugging it back in.

*Refer to IEC 664-1
