Reflections, April 8, 2016Page 2

From The Executive Director Written by Lynn Tanner, CMCA

The commu-nity’s yard waste service will begin on Monday, April

11. We realize that come spring, many residents have a collection of branches that fell over the win-ter. Therefore, there will be no restrictions on size of brush piles for the first THREE weeks of brush pick-up (April 11 – April 29). After that time, we ask residents with a pile larger than 4’ x 6’ to con-tact the RCA Office to request the brush trailer. A copy of the 2016 Yard Waste Pick-up schedule is on the cover of this issue and it can also be found on the About Radisson / homeowner services page on our website.

We try to keep you informed of events well enough ahead a time so you can plan vacations, etc accord-ingly. in this issue, we have the dates that we will be holding our summer Rec program at Kerri hornaday Park. This is an extremely popular program, so we like to give ample notice of the program’s 5-week dates. On page 5, you will find the Summer Rec dates, as well as the dates of our Water Aerobics pro-gram and Swim Lessons. Please note, this year we will only be hav-ing three sessions of swim lessons rather than four. historically, our fourth session has lower enrollment as August is a popular time for fami-lies to vacation. new this year, we’re allowing residents to sign-up for all three sessions any time after May 1. in the past, we held registrations

for the third and fourth session at a later date. now, parents can sign their kids up for summer rec, swim lessons, and tennis at one time to get summer schedules in place.

in addition to the summer events listed above, please mark your cal-endar for this year’s Founder’s day event. It will be held on Saturday, August 6 (rain date of August 7) and we are so pleased to announce that this year’s event will include Radisson resident, Letizia, and the Z Band being scheduled to perform! There will also be fire-works, food and family fun events too numerous to list! hope to see you there.

We are still in need of addi-tional lifeguards, specifically high school aged guards who can assist with closing the pool at the end of the season. With a lon-ger season than other community pools, the Oberon Pool opens on Memorial Day and closes on Labor day. however, we run on shortened hours at the beginning and end of the season. College-aged guards staff the pool while the younger guards are still attending high-school class-es. near the end of the season, much of our staff returns to college in mid-August, leaving us to rely heav-ily on high-school guards to staff the pool with the required amount of pool staff. if you know of someone who may be interested, please sug-gest that they come in to the RCA Office and complete an application today! it is not required that they be a Radisson resident. We are also still

accepting applications for summer Rec and the Maintenance dept, but have limited spots available in both of those departments.

The tot-lot located near Mallard Pond, constructed of wood and approximately thirty years old, had to be removed in its entirety last fall. The Operations Committee solicited feedback from residents to see what they would like to see that space used for in the future. Most respon-dents felt that something of a simi-lar nature should be replaced there. normally, the process to replace something of that magnitude would take time to research, budget for and implement. however, while research-ing tot-lot options for consideration in a future budget, we were able to participate in a grant program, allowing us to purchase the unit last year. With the weather conditions unexpectedly working in our favor, the new tot-lot and swing-set was installed in December before snowfall. The maintenance staff has some finishing touches that need to be done to the area once they are able to access the area with their equipment (without damaging the common property) and this new play area will be available for use!

Residents interested in renting a plot in the Community Gardens can do so by contacting the RCA Office. Plots are $25 for the season. Gardeners must also pay a separate, refundable $25 deposit. This fee is to ensure that gardeners provide the necessary end-of-season clean-up of their plot, so the maintenance

department personnel do not need to. As a reminder – items grown in the Community Garden plots are the property of those that lease and maintain that plot. Please be courte-ous and not take items from another gardener’s plot.

The nominating Committee would like to remind residents that in our continuing effort to “Go Green”, voting in this year’s Annual Elections will be done electronically. If you haven’t yet registered and would like to vote in this year’s election, you must complete a Membership Registration Form by May 13. This can be done after logging in to the Members Only side of the Association’s website and following the links to the Resident Membership Registration Form.

New residents, and those that have relocated within Radisson, will be receiving a personalized invitation to attend this month’s New Residents’ Reception, to be held at the Aspen House Community Center on April 14. You will have an opportunity to meet other new residents, Board directors, committee members and staff. There will be Anheuser Busch products and wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and some delicious hors d’oeuvres. new residents in atten-dance will also be given a Welcome Gift! Babysitting is available, at no charge, in the nursery school class-rooms. Please RsVP to [email protected].

Women’s History: Right to Vote Had Beginnings in Upstate New York

News From Assemblyman Will Barclay

March is Women’s history

Month and many of the early crusad-ers who fought for the right to vote lived in upstate new York. Men and women helped this cause but three upstate women in particular—Elizabeth Cady stanton, susan B. Anthony, and Matilda Josyln Gage—are credited with shaping the nation-al conversation in the mid and late 1800s, which led to Women’s suffrage in 1920. All of the women were also abolitionists.

stanton, Anthony and Gage were founding members of the national Woman suffrage Association and served in various offices of the organi-zation from 1869 to 1889. When the association formed, it had representa-tives from 19 states and focused on changing the u.s. Constitution.

Elizabeth Cady stanton was born in Johnstown, nY and she helped orga-nize the Women’s Rights Convention in 1848 in Seneca Falls. It was in seneca Falls that she gave her famous speech, the declaration of sentiments, and declared that women should have the right to vote. she is often credited as beginning the organized women’s rights and suffrage movements in the u.s. and she traveled across the u.s. to give speeches. in one of her most frequent speeches, “Our Girls” she urged girls to get an education and earn an income if they needed to. she and susan B. Anthony gathered 400,000 signatures with the Women’s

Loyal National League for a petition to end slavery and ratify the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. her history is preserved in seneca Falls at the Women’s Rights national historic Park and the national Women’s hall of Fame in seneca Falls.

Matilda Joslyn Gage was born in Cicero, new York. in 1871, Gage was one of many women who tried to vote but was denied the right in Fayetteville. during the Civil War, she helped organize hospital supplies for union soldiers and fought for an end to slavery. her home in Fayetteville became a station on the underground Railroad. her relationships with native American women convinced Gage and others that the subordina-tion of women was not natural. she was also the mother-in-law of L. Frank Baum and she had a profound influ-ence on his writing, especially with “The Wizard of Oz.” Her story is documented and preserved locally at the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation in Fayetteville.

in 1872, susan B. Anthony voted, but was arrested for doing so in Rochester. she argued that the Constitution gave her that right, how-ever, she was denied a trial by jury and lost her case. she advocated for better pay for women. While working as a teacher in Canajoharie in 1848, she discovered that male teachers were paid $10 a month and female teach-ers made $2.50. her paper, “The Revolution” argued for equal pay for

equal work and she promoted a policy of purchasing American-made goods. Anthony is often remembered as being the first woman to appear on a dollar coin. her entire history is preserved at the susan B. Anthony Museum and house in Rochester. Each of the women authored “A history of Women’s Suffrage” together.

The movement wasn’t always uni-fied. strategies for achieving the right to vote varied, from challenging male-voting only laws in court to passing suffrage acts in each state. Each effort had failures and successes along the way, however, stanton, Anthony, and Gage, worked to see a change at the federal level that affirmed a woman’s right to vote.

during the 1910s, protests, hun-ger strikes and demonstrations were held throughout the country and suf-fragette groups had formed in many communities. 1917 was a pivotal year for our country. u.s. declared war on Germany. new York granted women the right to vote and by that time, other states had too. suffragists decided to get behind the war effort to further their cause, and in 1918 President Woodrow Wilson declared his support for women’s suffrage. This eventually led to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. The amendment was ratified in 1920. unfortunately, stanton, Anthony and Gage did not live to see this day.

To commemorate the long-fought right to vote movement, the state

Legislature enacted a commission to facilitate celebrations of women’s suf-frage across the state. Beginning in 2017 and through 2020, new York will celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. The Women’s Rights national historic Park, the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, and the susan B. Anthony Museum and house along with various state agen-cies will be involved in planning the events. The events aim to educate the public about our state’s history but will also, hopefully, draw tourists and revenue for localities and inspire gen-erations about the historic movement and pursuit of equal rights.

Anthony house and Museum website at http://susan-banthonyhouse.org/index.php. All of their stories are also preserved at the national Women’s hall of Fame, https://www.womenofthehall.org/. if you have any questions or comments regarding these or other state issues, please contact me.
