Tree of Life
We offer parishioners a way to remember a
loved one, a special event, special sacrament or
just to have a family name listed on one of our
leaves on our Tree of Life. This tree is located on
the St. Joseph side wall to the rear of our church.
At your convenience check it out and call the
parish office if you are interested in having a leaf
engraved.
"Is there anyone sick among you? He should ask for the presbyters of the church. They, in turn, are to pray over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord." (James11-35:J.4-J.5) Parishioners who are seriously ill or antici-pating hospitalization for a serious illness are re-quested to call the parish office if they wish to re-ceive the sacrament. Some hospitals provide full time priests/chaplains. Patients are regularly visit-ed and offered the sacrament of the anointing of the sick, as well as daily Communion. This, how-ever, presumes inpatient admission. Those pa-tients who are interested in receiving this sacra-ment, but are scheduled for outpatient or same day surgery, should call the parish office to en-sure anointing before going to the hospital.
REFLECTIONS ON TODAYS READINGS The light of salvation is intended to attract eve-
ryone across the face of the earth. The passage
from Isaiah we hear today was written after the
Babylonian captivity when the Chosen People
were allowed to return to Jerusalem. At first
“your sons . . . and your daughters” are invited
(60:4), but then people from Midian, Ephah, and
Sheba are welcomed. These descendants of
Abraham had separated from the Chosen People
before they were held captive in Egypt. In the
Gospel, the star that the magi saw at its rising
must have been visible out-side Judea, leading
them from foreign lands to the east. Paul tells the
people of Ephesus that “Gentiles are coheirs . . .
copartners in the promise in Christ Je-
sus” (Ephesians 3:6). Salvation is not restricted
to one people, one region, or one era.• Gold and
frankincense are brought as gifts in both the first
reading and the Gospel, but in the Gospel the
magi add myrrh. Myrrh is often used for anoint-
ing, but it also could relieve pain or perfume a
body, so we also see it offered to Jesus on the
cross (Mark 15:23) and used to anoint his body
in the tomb (John 19:39). Jesus is both king and
victim, and the gifts he is given reflect both
roles.• Like the magi, we also have the oppor-
tunity to come seek the Lord. It is a journey we
make throughout our lives, looking for the
Lord’s presence in the world, in our lives, in our-
selves. Like the magi, who return home a differ-
ent way, encountering the Lord often leads us to
change course.
Epiphany of the Lord
The word “epiphany” comes from the
Greek epiphainen, a verb that means “to
shine upon,” “to manifest,” or “to make
known.” Thus, the feast of the Epiphany
celebrates the many ways that Christ has
made Himself known to the world, mainly
the three events that manifested the mission and divinity of
Christ: the visit of the Magi (Matthew 2:1-12), the baptism
of Jesus (Mark 1:9-11), and the miracle at Cana (John 2:1-
11).

gresar a Jerusalén.
to” (efesios 3, 6).
¿Estoy dispuesto a
Gracias.
