By Hope Lenamon McGregor Independent School District announced their first confirmed case of COVID-19 on September 23, just two weeks after the dis- trict’s return to school. The confirmed case was a student on the Primary cam- pus, according to a general letter sent to families of those with students at the pre-kin- dergarten through first grade campus. Members of the MISD administration reached out directly to those whose chil- dren were found to be a “close contact” with the con- firmed case, and all students and staff in the classroom with the confirmed case were placed on quarantine. According to the Texas Education Agency, a close contact is someone who has been directly exposed to in- fectious secretions, like be- ing coughed on, or has been within 6-feet for longer than McGregor ISD Announces 1st Confirmed COVID-19 Case 15-minutes. However, addi- tional factors like proper mask usage, ventilation, presence of dividers and symptoms of the patient may affect the deter- mination. In the letter, caretakers were reminded that unless they were directly and per- sonally notified of close con- tact or exposure, their child was not placed under quar- antine and may continue to come to school. But, caretak- ers were asked to keep care- fully screening their child for symptoms each morning. “McGregor ISD believes in transparency and respects the right of parents to be in- formed of their children’s proximity to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Primary Principal Cheri Zacharias wrote in the letter. “While you may have a strong emotional reaction to this information, please know that there is no need for alarm, only vigilance in monitoring symptoms and emphasizing safety procedures like prop- erly wearing face coverings, hand washing and physical distancing.” By Hope Lenamon The deadline for Texas voters to register to vote in the November joint general elec- tion is Monday, October 5.
