REFLECTING ON THE GOSPEL The student teacher was eager to receive some comments after his first experience in the classroom. The mentor offered a gentle critique: When some students dont understand the lesson, it isnt enough simply to repeat it more loudly. But the student teachers experience can be our own many times. My explanation was so good! Theyll understand it if I repeat it again….but instead of repeating something over and over, more loudly each time, it might be good to try another example or another explanation instead. Or it might be worth the effort to appeal to a different style of learner. Perhaps the first approach to the lesson appealed to the visual learners. The second could be pitched to the auditory learners. Now that we are in the third week of Easter, we hear yet another story of a resurrection appearance of Jesus. There are a number of different Easter stories that appeal to us on a variety of levels. Initially, the story was the finding of the empty tomb. Then, we had a story of the appearance of Jesus to the disciples without Thomas, followed by one with Thomas. Thomas says he will not believe unless he probes the nail marks. Now we have another story where the risen Jesus eats a meal. He is said to have flesh and bones. He is not a ghost. His eating baked fish virtually confirms that. If we didnt understand with the empty tomb, if we didnt understand when Jesus appeared to even Thomas, now there is another appearance where he graphically demonstrates that he is present amongst them. Of course, each of the three stories we are referring to are from different gospel writers: the empty tomb (Mark), the appearance to Thomas (John), and now the risen Jesus eating fish (Luke). But these texts are given to us on successive Sundays to confirm for us that Jesus truly rose from the dead. Moreover, todays gospel passage begins with a line that should not be neglected: the disciples recounted how Jesus was made known to them/in the breaking of bread.Of course, the Emmaus story precedes this in the Gospel of Luke. And Luke is telling his audience that the breaking of breadis the way Jesus is made known to the community. No longer is Jesus appearing to his assembled followers. That ended with the ascension. Instead, the community will now come together and experience Christ in the breaking of bread, or in what we call Eucharist. So in addition to the empty tomb, and the appearances, this is yet another way this resurrected Lord is made known to us. By hearing a variety of different stories, we might, like the disciples, come gradually to accepting the risen Christ. Living Liturgy—year B PASTOR Fr. Arturo will be on vacation thru April 20. REFLECTING ON THE GOSPEL

The student teacher was eager to receive some

comments after his first experience in the classroom.

The mentor offered a gentle critique: “When some

students don’t understand the lesson, it isn’t enough

simply to repeat it more loudly.” But the student

teacher’s experience can be our own many times. My

explanation was so good! They’ll understand it if I

repeat it again….but instead of repeating something

over and over, more loudly each time, it might be good

to try another example or another explanation instead.

Or it might be worth the effort to appeal to a different

style of learner. Perhaps the first approach to the lesson

appealed to the visual learners. The second could be

pitched to the auditory learners.

Now that we are in the third week of Easter, we hear

yet another story of a resurrection appearance of Jesus.

There are a number of different Easter stories that

appeal to us on a variety of levels. Initially, the story

was the finding of the empty tomb. Then, we had a

story of the appearance of Jesus to the disciples without

Thomas, followed by one with Thomas. Thomas says

he will not believe unless he probes the nail marks.

Now we have another story where the risen Jesus eats a

meal. He is said to have flesh and bones. He is not a

ghost. His eating baked fish virtually confirms that.

If we didn’t understand with the empty tomb, if we

didn’t understand when Jesus appeared to even

Thomas, now there is another appearance where he

graphically demonstrates that he is present amongst

them. Of course, each of the three stories we are

referring to are from different gospel writers: the empty

tomb (Mark), the appearance to Thomas (John), and

now the risen Jesus eating fish (Luke). But these texts

are given to us on successive Sundays to confirm for us

that Jesus truly rose from the dead.

Moreover, today’s gospel passage begins with a line

that should not be neglected: the disciples recounted

“how Jesus was made known to them/in the breaking of

bread.” Of course, the Emmaus story precedes this in

the Gospel of Luke. And Luke is telling his audience

that the “breaking of bread” is the way Jesus is made

known to the community. No longer is Jesus appearing

to his assembled followers. That ended with the

ascension. Instead, the community will now come

together and experience Christ in the breaking of bread,

or in what we call Eucharist.

So in addition to the empty tomb, and the

appearances, this is yet another way this resurrected

Lord is made known to us. By hearing a variety of

different stories, we might, like the disciples, come

gradually to accepting the risen Christ. Living Liturgy—year B

BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH

You are invited to participate in a guided tour of Mount Angel Abbey on

Saturday, May 19th. One of the Abbey Monks will provide a personalized

narration of the history of the Abbey grounds and buildings. Sponsored by

the Knights of Columbus, everyone is welcome to join us Saturday

afternoon. We will be greeted by a Monk at the entrance to the Abbey

church at 10:45 am. We will join in the noon prayers following the tour.

The prayers last about 15 minutes. After prayers led by the Monks, we will

have a chance as a group to pray for religious vocations and for families that

they may grow in the grace of our Lord. For those interested there will be an

opportunity to visit the gift shop before returning to St. Patrick’s.

Meet at St. Patrick’s church at 9:45 am to car pool to the abbey, or you

have the option to drive to the abbey on your own. The Abbey has requested

we give them an approximate number of people attending, so please call

John Fontana at 503-266-2788 and leave a message, or email him at:

[email protected], if you plan to attend.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 3484 AWARDS FOR

FEBRUARY Family of the Month - Ken and his wife Dolores Bepple are newer

members of St. Pats and have been active in our KofC council 3484 events.

Their family consists of two grown daughters and six grandkids. Recently

they have helped in our Crab Dinner/Auction in the kitchen area. They

have also helped with the 4th degree garage sale that supports their activities.

Ken has willingly shared his construction talents by helping one of our

elderly members with his roof problems, installed shelving for Rel. Ed.

storage, and is working on a trailer for our council use in the future. We

thank them for their faithful support.

Lady of the Month - Karen Hunt has been involved with our parish for

quite some time with her husband Stuart, our council treasurer. Recently

she has been “chairwoman” on the women’s club “chair committee” for

getting some new chairs in the auditorium. Stay tuned for that one. The

women’s club annual tea is one area she has helped with heavily. She also

does the special “head table” at our Crab Dinner Auction that is auctioned

off annually. Graciously she and Stuart are involved with taking care of her

aging parents and a granddaughter too. Her faithfulness and service is

appreciated.

Knight of the Month – Jose (Pepe) Camarena is a newer Knight and

active in the Hispanic Round Table we have in our council. He with his

wife have four boys and has been at St. Pats over 3 yrs. He helps with first

communion preparation, with the Hispanic prayer group, and the annual

Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration. Recently he helped with raffle ticket

sales at our main fund raiser. Thank you to Jose (Pepe).

THANK YOU

We would like to thank all those who attended the Tillie Herbst funeral and

so generously supported us with love and prayers. Alice Wallace, Michael

Beretram and family.
