Small changes in our commuting habits can have

a major impact on our carbon footprint.

Transportation represented 27% of the total U.S. greenhouse gas

emissions in 2013. Autos, SUVs, pickup trucks and minivans

accounted for 60% of the emissions within this sector.

Provide or subsidize RTA Commuter Advantage

Install bike racks and encourage biking to work

Preferred parking

Through a payroll deduction plan, employees can prepay transit fees on a pre-tax basis. With features like “Guaranteed Ride Home”, employees are assured of a no hassle ride home if they unexpectedly need to leave early or stay late. You can save thousands of dollars per year by riding instead of driving! Not to mention you can catch up on your reading while someone else does the driving!

Make it easy for employees and tenants to bike to work. Provide secure bike racks, changing rooms, bicycle fix it stations and showers. Biking not only is good for the environment, but is good for your health! Bike riders lose an average of 13 pounds in their first year of cycling and can have cardiovascular benefits without the stress on your joints like running. Not to mention saving an estimated $8,000+ per year in fuel and the costs associated with maintaining a car.

Reward and recognize carpoolers and those who drive eco-friendly vehicles by giving them the prime parking spots. Either a space near the entrance (in our winter climate that’s appreciated) or one under a canopy or in an area protected from sun and snow.

Are your fleet vehicles maintained properly? Do you have the appropriate vehicles and number of vehicles for your needs? Are you driving a pick up truck when a small utility vehicle will do? A review of your fleet can uncover inefficiencies and opportunities to reduce costs and CO2 emissions.

If your company provides vehicles to employees (executives or sales personnel, for example), consider a policy that limits the vehicles available with a miles-per-gallon limit, encourage hybrids, electric vehicles or other eco-friendly vehicles (appropriate for use requirements).

Consider asking employees and fleet drivers to monitor their driving behavior. Hard accelerations, inconsistent speeds and hard braking, for example, can impact fuel efficiency by as much as 30%.

Unnecessary idling wastes fuel and pollutes our environment. Every 10 minutes an engine is off equates to one pound of CO2 emissions and idling causes two times the wear and tear on a vehicle’s parts. Some think idling is more efficient, but in fact idling for about 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine. It is estimated that Americans use about 3.8 million gallons of gasoline per day idling. Unless it’s a safety issue, turn off your vehicle!

While not appropriate for all positions, some employees can be just as effective working from home. Think about implementing a plan to allow certain employees the option. Telecommuting saves enough energy to power 1 million homes in the U.S. for a year. Employees save gas and commuting expenses and it is estimated that employers save about $2,000 per year for each employee who telecommutes by limiting absences and increased productivity from fewer distractions, for example.

While in person meetings are necessary, there are times when teleconferencing or video conferencing are appropriate. Think about substituting a few team meetings with a video conference and do the math. How much did you save in airfares, mileage, CO2 emissions and other meeting expenses? Not to mention an improved work life balance for employees.

Start a company or building carpool matching service to connect carpoolers. NOACA’s Rideshare program does more than connect carpoolers. You can log your commutes and calculate savings and reduced CO2 emissions. To learn more, visit www.ohiorideshare.com.
