Librarians of the Slavic and East European Library at the University of Illinois at Ur- bana-Champaign present here their annual selection of some of the significant reference works in the field. Annotations are signed with the initials of the reviewers.,

GENERAL

Bibliographie zur osteuropaischen Ge- schichte: Verzeichnis der zwischen 1965 und 1974 veroffentlichen Literatur in west- europdischen Sprachen zur osteuropdi- schen Geschichte bis 1945. A continuation of Klaus Meyer's bibliog-

raphy of the same title covering the period 1939-1964, this volume brings under bibliographic control almost 18,000 titles pro- duced by Western scholars in the succeeding decade. In his preface editor Werner Philipp mentions plans for the next phase of this project, a bibliography to cover the decade 1975-1984. Items in German, French, and Italian were evaluated and selected in Ber- lin, while items in English, Dutch, Scandi- navian languages, and Finnish were compiled in Toronto, Holland, and Sweden respectively. As in the earlier volume, the period covered ranges from ancient times to 1945; the geographical area encompasses Russia and the Soviet Union, Poland, Fin- land, and the Baltic states; and about 950 periodicals are cited. But in this volume the range of subjects covered has been broadened, and a more detailed classifica- tion system has been developed. The volume begins with a preface (in German and English), followed by a list of abbreviations, a key to abbreviations of periodical titles, and a table showing the systematic classifi- cation employed (in German with English

The bibliography proper opens with a general section on Russia and Eastern Europe (the main focus of the work) and continues with sections devoted to individual areas-Russia, the Soviet Union, Ukraine, White Russia, Asiatic Russia, Bal- tic Lands, Lithuania, Finland, and Poland- each of which has several levels of subdivisions. The unannotated entries are numbered consecutively from the beginning to the end of the volume, which concludes with an author index.-MTC.

Comecon Foreign Trade Data 1982. Lon- don: Macmillan, 1983. 518 pp. These statistical pocketbooks are both

second editions; future editions are planned for publication in alternate years. They are edited by the Vienna Institute for Compar- ative Economic Studies. Sources for each work include more than fifty titles (statistical yearbooks and periodicals) from CMEA countries and international organizations. Most of the statistical series begin with data from 1960. Some of the gaps in foreign trade data in Bulgarian, East German, Roma- nian, and Soviet publications are filled from other statistical sources, primarily from Western countries.-LHM.

The present volume has 4,619 entries for articles from Festschriften, conference proceedings, and collected papers in the English language from 1900 to 1981, English language journals 1978-1981, and omissions from and mistakes contained in his earlier work. erage here includes articles with a linguistic or literary content and general articles of interest to scholars in those fields on all the Slavic-speaking countries of Eastern Eu- rope, the Soviet Union, Hungary and Ro- mania, the Baltic countries, and Finland. Excluded are articles on Albania, East Ger- many, and Greece. The primary arrangement is alphabetical by subject with an auxiliary name index that includes authors, compilers, editors, translators, and others named in entries. Like its predecessor, this volume, with its instructive introduction and various aids for use, will be in great de- mand.-RB.

Citations are to materials on Cyril and Methodius, the Moravian Mission, the history and development of the early Slavic liturgy, the establishment of the Old Church Slavonic literary language, and the development of the ear- liest Slavic literatures. terials published between 1966 and 1975 on the history of the Balkan people from the time of the fall of Constantinople to the end of World War II. It does not pretend to be comprehensive, but the 9,416 entries pro-

vide international coverage of scholarly books, articles, dissertations, and book re- views. The second volume (not yet available) will include publications dealing with ethnography, folklore, literature, education, press, philosophy, and aesthetics. The handbook is arranged alphabetically by 94 major subject categories and within these by subtopics. Each title, with the exception of those in English and German, is also given in French translation. Access to the primary arrangement is aided by a personal name index (with subdivisons in the Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek alphabets) and a geographical index.-RB.

ALBANIA

addition to the sparse reference literature on Albania, a country about which most of us know woefully little. The work is divided into three main sections-general works; history and politics; and law, business and economics-each with numerous subdivisions and brief but substantial introductory essays heading main sections as well as major subdivisions. These essays and the introductory material at the beginning of the volume appear both in German and in En- glish translation. The more than 6,000 bibliographic entries describe separately published works, periodical articles, selected pamphlets, official documents, and broadsides in Albanian (about half the titles) and other languages published as recently as 1980 (in the section on business and economics 1981 publications are also included). The bulk of the material described was published in the 1960s and 1970s, but relevant older literature is also cited. Annotations (in German) include translations of titles when necessary and brief descriptive information. Individual items are numbered within each of the three main sections; arrangement within sections

and subdivisions is alphabetical. A chronological table and lists of abbreviations and location codes (identifying repositories in the Federal Republic of Germany, West Ber- lin, London, and the United States) precede the bibliographic survey. most extensive Estonian-English dictionary, Saagpakk's work also includes a grammatical survey of contemporary Estonian, de- clension and conjugation tables, and a treatment of standard Estonian ortho- graphic conventions. Americanisms and Briticisms are marked as such in definitions.-HL.

Lithuanian Periodicals in American Librar- ies: A Union List. Compiled by John P. Balys. Washington, D.C.: Library of Congress, 1982. xi, 125 pp. LC 80-51972. This bibliography includes 888 entries for

newspapers, periodicals, and serial publications in Lithuanian "published anytime and anywhere, periodicals on Lithuanian matters in other languages, and periodicals published in the territory of Lithuania in any language and at any time." Because of the nature of a union list, however, it includes only those publications from the above categories that are currently held in libraries of the United States and Canada. The alphabetical listing includes symbols of holding libraries and detailed holdings information for the Library of Congress. An index of cities of publication and a subject index aug- ment this useful volume.-RB.

CZECHOSLOVAKIA

Slovnik eeskych spisovatelu': Pokus o rekon- strukci de'jin eeske literatury 1948-1979. Compiled by Jiri Brabec et al. Edited by

lished in Paris in the late 1970s, this work provides biographical and bibliographical information about hundreds of Czech writers, most of whom have been active since 1948, although there are some entries for those whose careers began as early as the 1920s. And although there are a few entries for authors officially published in present- day Czechoslovakia, most entries are for those who are now ignored or officially cen- sored. Living and deceased poets, prose writers, dramatists, critics, translators, literary scholars, reporters, essayists, and writers for film, radio, and television are all represented in one alphabetical listing, whether they are in exile or still living in Czechoslovakia. Each entry begins with biographical data, including education, professional affiliations, honors, and activities. This is followed by a bibliography of works by and about the author published in Czechoslovakia or abroad. Translations are identified, as well as works solely or first published abroad. Particular care is taken to identify the literary genre of each citation. Photographs are included whenever possi- ble.-JPE

ings held in the Columbia University Ar- chives, this volume surveys the output of the democratic opposition in Poland from the establishment of KOR in June 1976 through the creation of Solidarity in August 1980. The publications listed in the volume are extensively annotated, revealing a wealth of source material on the period previously fa- miliar only to a limited number of scholars and 6migr6s. Coverage includes journals, monographs, and separate documents (issued by specific groups or pertaining to specific events or cases), and arrangement of material in the volume follows format. Each

entry includes a full bibliographical citation, translated title, and a summary of contents. Journal contents are analyzed in full. The materials selected for inclusion were consid- ered to be the least accessible and most rep- resentative of dissident writings from this period of open opposition. Thus, while the journals Zapis and Krytyka, both available through Western publishers, are given only sample annotations, Glos, Droga, and Opi- nia are represented to the full extent of the archive's holdings. The compiler's introduction provides a useful overview of the pub- lishing activity of the dissident movement during this period. A combined name-subject index is appended.-MS.

volumes), this biobibliographical dictionary will provide data on 1300 deceased Polish academicians. The seven parts correspond to the structure of divisions within the present-day Polish Academy of Sciences: the social sciences and humanities, the biological sciences, the exact sciences, the technical sciences, agriculture and forestry, medicine, and the earth sciences. With the exception of the social sciences and humanities, each part will be contained in one volume. The present volume is the first of three covering the social sciences and humanities. Data within the 142 entries in this volume are arranged according to the order of items in a 16-point questionnaire (described in the introduction but not reproduced in the volume). In addition to basic biographical data, each entry provides information concerning the research, academic appointments, scholarly achievements, major publications, civic activities, and nonscholarly publications of the biographee, as well as bibliographic citations to other biographical sources. Some entries are accompanied by reproductions of portraits or photographs.

A personal name index and an index to the scientific disciplines represented in the volume are appended.-MS.

four broad categories: Russian as a world language (including the activities of MAPRIaL and the Russian language in Czechoslovakia); linguistics; literary criti- cism; methods of teaching Russian. Mate- rials selected are by Czech and Slovak authors or by scholars who have lived in Czechoslovakia for a long period of time, and the materials themselves have been published both in Czechoslovakia and abroad. Entries include monographic works, textbooks, conference proceedings, dictionaries, handbooks, and articles and re- views in collections, journals, and newspapers. Not included are dissertations, annotations, and pedagogical readings. A full bibliographic citation is given for each entry, and if the title does not clearly reflect the subject, a brief explanatory annotation is provided. There is an author index, but the one major drawback to this extensive and well-prepared bibliography is the lack of a detailed subject index.-JPE

tionist Soviet citizens is the first substantial guide of this kind. It contains nearly 3,400 entries for individuals who expressed disagreement with the authorities between 1956 and 1975. Each entry includes full name, sex, dates of birth and death, ethnic origin, relationship to other dissidents, profession, membership or non-membership in the Communist party or Komsomol, dissident activity, and major works published or distributed in samizdat. Year and document number are given when works are registered in Arkhiv Samizdata. Along with political activists, the dictionary includes persons who were prosecuted under the So- viet Criminal Code for belonging to prohib- ited religious sects and cults. Also included are texts of major RSFSR Criminal Code articles concerning political offenses, a short glossary that includes data on specific dissident groups, and a selected bibliography on related matters in major European languages. The project was carried out by the Institute of Eastern European Studies of the University of Amsterdam.-DA.

Russian is designed both as a pedagogical tool for use at the intermediate and ad- vanced level of Russian language study and as a first study of nonverbal communication in Russian. in as many separate sections, this dictionary

provides a quick and easy means of identifying names and places in the works of Dos- toevskii. Based on the 1972 Akademiia nauk edition of Dostoevskii's Polnoe so- branie sochinenii, each section lists major and minor characters, defining their rela- tionships and importance in a given work; also included are entries for notable public and literary figures (Shakespeare, Napo- leon', Lomonosov, etc.). There are entries for famous quotations and titles from world literature, for place names and for literary allusions of all kinds. Many cross references are included for alternate spellings and var- iations of names. Although all entries are in English or transliteration, a useful feature is the inclusion of the original phrase or title as given in the Russian text. An extensive index of names, titles, and places should make this quite useful to both the general reader and the specialist.-JPE

Historical Library's bibliography of the same title (covering 1928-1959) published in 1960 and N. M. Chentsov's Vosstanie dekabristov of 1929, the 3,800 entries in this work provide international coverage of literature on the Decembrists. Many prere- volutionary and Soviet works omitted from the previous bibliographies are included. Coverage of Soviet literature is particularly full and includes even popular provincial newspaper articles and sections of textbooks. The detailed subject arrangement is augmented by a complete name and title index.-LHM.

pedias recently published as new condensa- tions of Soviet subject encyclopedias this is certainly one of the best and most scholarly.

The longest articles are signed, and attri- butions of other articles are given with the list of authors at the end of the book. The brief bibliographies of both Western and So- viet sources have been updated expertly, and the volume provides an excellent overview of Soviet philosophical scholarship. An extensive (Cyrillic only) name index, not covering the bibliographies, is included. -LHM.

Grazhdanskaia voina i voennaia intervent- siia v SSSR: Entsiklopediia. S. S. Khro- mov, chief editor. Moscow: Sovetskaia entsiklopediia, 1983. 702 pp. 9.60 rubles. LC 83-136118. With over 2,700 entries and numerous

maps, diagrams, and illustrations, this one- volume encyclopedia treats in detail the military, political, and social history of the Rus- sian Civil War period (1918-1920). Many of the articles are biographical in nature or related to specific military operations and campaigns. A long but selective bibliography is included at the end of the volume. Unfortunately there is no index to the contents of the entire volume, but numerous cross-references within the text of the encyclopedia itself are a valuable aid to the reader searching for information on related topics.-HL.

The Modern Russian Dictionary for English Speakers: English-Russian. By Elizabeth A. M. Wilson. L. P. Popova, Russian editor. Oxford and New York: Pergamon Press, 1982. 715 pp. $39.00. LC 81- 12141. Designed to aid the speaker of English in

the acquisition of the colloquial vocabulary of modern standard Russian, this dictionary is a joint publication of Pergamon Press and Russkii iazyk. Emphasis is on the spoken language, and the head words are translated rather than defined. English words lacking true equivalents in modern standard Rus- sian are thus omitted altogether. Entries consist of head word, grammatical labels, translation(s), and examples of usage; sty- listic or field labels, restrictions on usage, and case government are indicated when appropriate. The systematic exclusion of slang words and expressions makes the bias to-

ward British English less obtrusive to the American user.-MS.

card catalogue on the history of the university, this bibliography presents citations to more than 2,800 Russian-language books, articles, dissertations, and published official documents (near-print materials are also included) dealing with various aspects of the university from its founding in 1755 to 1980. The work is divided into nine main sections, beginning with the obligatory category devoted to Lenin's views on higher education in general and Moscow University in particular. The next eight sections, each with numerous subdivisions, contain citations to materials on the history, administration, do- mestic and international activity, and teaching and research functions of every department, program, institute, museum, library, society, and other body affiliated with the university. Brief descriptive annotations accompany some entries. The volume opens with a preface and a list of abbreviations and closes with a short guide to reference literature and a name index. -MTC.

nesov and Ozhegov's 1959 Russkoe litera- turnoe proiznoshenie i udarenie, this nor- mative pronouncing dictionary combines information on pronunciation, stress, and ir- regular grammatical forms for some 63,500 Russian words. The dictionary, edited by the late R. I. Avanesov, reflects not only the changes in the Russian language since the time of publication of the earlier dictionary but also certain advances in Soviet linguistic science, particularly in the concepts of norms and variants. Indications concerning pronunciation and grammatical forms are




supplied whenever the head word departs from the basic reading rules and grammatical principles outlined in articles appended to the main body of the dictionary.-MS.

Entries include brief biographical information, descriptions of literary output, bibliographies of published works, and additional biographical sources, if available. Several appendixes contain other material about the Leningrad literary scene, including a list of periodicals and literary monuments. -AW.

edition, this dictionary provides brief definitions and examples of usage for over 750 pairs of antonyms. While less extensive than L'vov's 1978 Slovar' antonimov russkogo iazyka, which illustrates some 2,000 pairs of antonyms, Vvedenskaia's dictionary supplies brief definitions for each element of the antonym pair in addition to the examples of usage. The dictionary itself is supplemented by a brief discussion of the lexical and semantic issues relevant to the study of antonyms. An1 index of the antonyms contained in the volume is appended.-MS.

Slovar' blatnogo zhargona v SSSR. By Alek- sandr Skachinskii. New York: Silver Age, 1982. 246 pp. LC 84-11771. These two dictionaries represent opposite

approaches to the subject. While the dictionary composed by Ben-lakov is based strictly on literary sources and includes only those words which can be found in contem-

porary literature, that by Skachinskii is based on field work done by the author while living under appropriate circumstances. Slo- var' argo GULaga contains approximately 1, 150 words in alphabetical order. Each word is accompanied by an explanation or translation into standard Russian followed by a quotation from a literary source in which the word can be found. The quotation includes author, title, and page number. In some cases additional names of authors who happened to use this word are given. An author's preface and a list of literary sources are included. Slovar' blatnogo zhargona v SSSR consists of two parts. The first part is a dictionary of slang which contains approximately 1,300 words. In some cases examples of usage are included. A short introductory article explains the methods used in compiling the dictionary and includes a list of sources consulted during its preparation. Entries for individual words include bibliographic citations, often quite extensive, to the relevant etymological literature.-HL.

Based on a multitude of Belorussian, Russian, and Ukrainian sources, the work frequently contrasts the development of words among those three East Slavic languages.
