Lindsay Papers

A Handlist

Alexander Dunlop Lindsay was born i n Glasgow I 4 May, 1879,

the t h i r d ch i ld of the Rev. Thomas Martin Lindsay and Anna, daughter of Alexander Dunlop. After graduating from Glasgow

Universi ty he won the f irst schola rsh ip a t Univers i ty College,

Oxford, where he was pres ident of the Union and obtained

f i r s t s i n c l a s s i c a l moderations and l i t e r a e humaniores, Af t e r

a s i ng l e term a t Corsock Inn, s tudying Hebrew, with a view t o

en te r ing the Church, Lindsay re tu rned t o Oxford, and i n 1906 was offered a t u t o r i a l fe l lowship a t B a l l i o l . I n 1907 he

married a s tudent a t Somerville, E r i ca V io l e t , daughter of I Francis S t o r r , a c l a s s i c a l scholar of r e p u t e ' , by whom he

had a daughter and two sons.

Lindsay served with labour b a t t a l i o n s during the F i r s t

World War, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He re turn-

ed from France determined t o develop h i s academic work i n the

f i e l d of adu l t education, p a r t i c u l a r l y with the Oxford tu to r -

i a l c l a s se s and the W.E.A., A t the same time, almost inev i t -

ably , he was drawn i n t o a f f a i r s i n I re land , and i n 1921 he

went t o Dublin a s an observer, with, amongst o thers , Walter

hfoberly, s taying a t t he house of Horace Plunket t . I n 1922

he obtained the c h a i r of Moral Philosophy a t Glasgow, which

he occupied u n t i l 1924, when he went back t o B a l l i o l a s

Master. Between 1935 and 1938 he was Vice-Chancellor of

Oxford Univers i ty , and i n October 1938 he stood a s a Progress-

ive Independent candidate, supported by the Labour Par ty , i n

the Oxford C i ty by-elect ion. He was defeated, bu t h i s venture

in to p o l i t i c s was not i n s ign i f i can t .

When war came w i t h Germany, Lindsay was appointed chairman of the Oxford J o i n t Recrui t ing board, which, along with many

other a c t i v i t i e s , almost worked h i m t o death. These included

radio broadcasts , wr i t ing , a long t r i p t o America, adu l t

education work, and organis ing Nuff ie ld College. I n 194-4 he

collapsed with a s t r a ined h e a r t , and although t o l d t h a t h i s

ac t ive l i f e was probably over, he made a marked recovery.

After the war t he teaching s t a f f a t B a l l i o l was g r e a t l y

depleted and many new Fellows were e lected. Lindsay continued

as Master.

I n 1945 he accepted a peerage and became Lord Lindsay of Bi rker , taking h i s t i t l e from Bi rker Moor, Low Ground, i n

the Lake D i s t r i c t . The following year he went t o America t o l e c t u r e , and t o receive an honorary U . D . from Princeton.

A t t h i s time, too , he was deeply involved i n the reform- a t i on of the German u n i v e r s i t i e s ; and through h i s i n t e r e s t i n Germany he formed connections with Wilton Park. I n 1947

he was asked i f he would be P r i n c i p a l of S t . Ca thar ine ' s Foundation, i n Windsor Great Park, but declined.

Lindsay was seventy when he r e t i r e d from B a l l i o l . He had already become involved i n the proposal t o s e t up a new univers i ty which, a f t e r much d i scuss ion and argument, came

in to being a s t he Universi ty College of North S ta f fordsh i re , l a t e r the Universi ty of Keele. The Lindsays took up res id-

ence a t Keele when Lindsay became i t s first P r inc ipa l , but

over-worked by the preparations he was taken ill i n the

summer of 1950, and once again made a speedy, though not

complete, recovery, The College was formally opened by the

Queen, 17 Apri l 1951. Less than twelve months l a t e r , on 4 8 March 1952, Lindsay died, and was buried i n Cumberland,

near t o 'Heather and c l e a r streams' ,

Lindsay's papers, together with a number of those of h i s

forbears , were presented t o the Universi ty of Keele by h i s

daughter, Lady Sco t t , i n 1971. I n accordance with her wishes

the arrangement of the majori ty of the papers, i n envelopes

and box f i l e s , has been preserved. On t h i s b a s i s , a s f a r a s

poss ible , the mater ia l has been l i s t e d i n chronological order.
