Prevent, reduce, and clean up pollution was the largest green activity group with an estimated 460 current green jobs.

The second largest activity group was increase energy efficiency (353 jobs), followed by produce renewable energy (182 jobs).

The fastest estimated one year growth rate by activity group was in produce renewable energy with an estimated 9.3 percent rate of growth.

The Green Jobs Survey for Workforce 13 (Brevard County) was conducted in 2010 by the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation, in partnership with Workforce Florida, Inc. and was funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. The regional data are designed to inform local workforce, education, and economic development

partners of the dynamics of the green economy. The survey aims to help providers tailor training needs to green occupations most in demand.

The number of green jobs estimated in Workforce Region 13 in 2010 was 998.

Many of the green jobs in the region were professional.

Computer software engineers was the largest green job in the region with 200 jobs, all engaging in activities that increase energy efficiency.

Solar panel installers and environmental science and protection technicians had the highest share of green jobs compared to total jobs in the occupation.

The majority of green jobs were in wholesale trade (200 jobs); professional, scientific, and technical services (189 jobs); and manufacturing (166 jobs).

The highest expected growth rates were in educational services (18.9 percent) and construction (15.0 percent).

Wholesale trade had the largest number of green jobs (200 jobs) and was the industry with the greatest share of green jobs (4.2 percent).

Utilities had the second greatest share of green jobs (4.0 percent), followed by information (2.3 percent).

Professional, scientific, and technical services ranked second in number of green jobs (189 jobs), representing the fourth highest share of green jobs (1.7 percent).

Region 13 has a large share of employment by occupation in professional and technical occupations. This fact greatly influenced the types of occupations engaged in the five green activites.

The top green jobs in Region 13 were computer software engineer, systems software (200 jobs); sewing machine operator (137 jobs); and production workers, all other (111 jobs).

Construction jobs engage in many green activities and the top 25 green occupation list included solar photovoltaic installers (60 jobs); heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics (39 jobs); electricians (8 jobs); and construction managers (3 jobs).

The highest paid green job among the top 25 in Region 13 was industrial production managers ($52.48 hourly) and the lowest paid green job was dining room and cafeteria attendants ($9.17 hourly).

The greenest jobs were photovoltaic installers, sewing machine operators, and geoscientists who were 100 percent green (all were estimated to perform a green job).

The second greenest job was environmental science and protection technicians at 67.8 percent green jobs compared to total employment in this occupation.

Environmental engineers were third at 19.5 percent, followed by tire repairers and changers at 14.9 percent.

Only one skills gap was noted and this was for skills in lights retrofitting to more energy efficient technologies.

Training in soldering for electric lights production was identified as needed for solderers.

Bachelor’s degree (37.6 percent) was the educational requirement with the highest share of green jobs.

Over half of the estimated green jobs required education and training above high school and educational requirements of either a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree exceeded 40 percent.

Post Secondary Adult Vocational certificate ranked third among all educational categories with 15.4 percent of estimated jobs.

Training requirements for green jobs were widely varied. Many jobs only required short on-the-job training (OJT) while many required advanced degrees and certificates.

Recycling jobs required Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard training as specified by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Waste water license was listed for the water and wastewater treatment plant operators and solar contractor’s license and solar technical training was listed for both general and operations managers, sales managers, and technicians.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) was listed for several of the construction manager’s jobs.
