Energy Management
About Marorka
The objective of Energy Management
is to optimize the use of energy, that is, to maximize profits and
minimize environmental effect by more effective use of energy
by systematic and strategic methodology
It includes
Making plan with goals – execute the plan – evaluate the performance
It is driven by
Baselines, KPI, benchmarks and scorecard year after year

Key strategic elements of energy management
About Marorka
Solid energy management methodology (plan-do-check–act)
• Energy management system (f.ex. ISO 50001) on corporate level
• SEEMP on ship level
Robust energy management software tools (software & hardware)
• Tools on corporate level (for long term goals & performance evaluation)
• Tools on ship level (for short term goals & decission support)
Together as a combined solution
• Interconnect the methodology and the tools
• Take step by step strategic implementation approach (it takes time)
• Continous training
Management back up and training

Methodology
The practical approach
• Build up a scorecard with 6 KPI‘s
• Data collection performance
• Reporting performance
• Navigational performance
• Propulsion performance
• Machinery performance
• Bunker management
• Create model for calculation of score
• All KPI‘s caculated together to create
one score
(It can be based on monthly score or
voyage score and linked to the goals)

Software tool
Implement software / hardware tools that support the energy and
the management methodology
Make plan
Excecute plan

The combined solution
Design the energy management system as corporate
approach
• Take the whole fleet into consideration when designing the
approach
• Review all existing reporting systems on performance
Use software tools that support the architecture of the system
and are upgradeable (step by step approach)
• Start with small solution on one platform that supports both
small and large system. Then the solution can be extended
according to (customer requirement) and extended focus on
performance and emission
Ensure management support on all levels and build in a
position of sustainable manager that support the whole
process of integration.

5 REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT

Increased complexity in the regulatory environment
High complexity in keeping
track of emissions in different
zones.
• Annex VI waters
• ECA Zones
• Special Areas under Marpol
High cost in keeping track of
emissions in different zones and
regulations compliance
• More control expected (e.g. MRV)
• Lack of reliable method to ensure
that all ships comply
• Different fuel – different energy
content
CONFIDENTIAL – Copying or distribution not authorized 25 ©2013 MARORKA
Regulatory environment
About Marorka
Direct monitoring of ship air emissions is in its
infancy
• Many vessels are old and unequipped
• No official reporting requirements
Lack of measuring and reporting creates
difficulties in enforcing environmental
regulations
• Enforcement is a pen-and-paper based,
onboard measure.
• Ineffective, 1/1000 ships inspected
Weak enforcement distorts competition
• Operational cost for complying vessels is
higher than for vessels risking non-
compliance
• Lower operational costs are translated into
lower freight rates.
„Globally in much more exotic places,
where enforcement and compliance may
be met by a brown envelope, we are
really concerned because there are
humongous amounts of money at stake
here“ Niels Bjorn Mortensen, AP Möller-Maersk
„People will go under the radar. This is a
really scary scenario“ Ship operators
abiding by the rules would be sacrificing
their competitiveness. „The nice guys are
going to have to pay“ Jan Fritz Hansen, Danish Shipowners'
Association
Strevens said that would distort
competition and punish responsible
players. Widespread non-compliance
would undermine efforts to forecast
demand and would jeopardize
investment. Sustainable Shipping. Roger Strevens,
Wallenius Wilhelmsen

Concluding remarks
About Marorka
Create a holistic solution where the software tools support the
energy management strategy • More and more experience is established and good results achieved
• Best results when the approach is holistic and the strategy is clear
• On-board for decision support, data management and reporting and On-
shore for KPI and scorecard are needed
• Build decissions on technical and operational measures on
measurements
Create an environmental strategy and use software tools that
support compliancy towards regulations and strengthen incentives • New R&D programs are carried out like the SPEC program supported by
Nordic and Icelandic funds and companies. Companies like Marorka and
ARK Technology are participating
• Utilization of energy management data for environmental impact
estimation.
