CONJUNCTIVITIS

It is swelling (inflammation) or infection of the membrane lining the eyelids)

(Conjunctiva).

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

The conjunctiva is exposed to bacteria and other irritants, and tears help protect it by eliminating the bacteria. Tears also contain enzymes and antibodies that destroy the bacteria.

There are many causes for present conjunctivitis, but the most common are the viruses. Other causes may include:

• Allergies (allergic conjunctivitis)

• Bacteria

• Certain diseases

• Exposure to chemicals

• Chlamydia

• Fungi

• Parasites (rarely)

• Use of (especially extensive use lenses) contact lenses

"Acute conjunctivitis" refers to a viral infection of the conjunctiva. These infections are especially contagious among children.

The newborns can be infected by the bacteria in the birth canal. This condition is called ophthalmia neonatorum and must be treated immediately to preserve the vision of the baby.
