In short these benefits include a reduction in risk of getting type II diabetes, colon cancer, prostate cancer, endometrial cancer, skin cancer, depression, committing suicide, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and more. So, the natural question to ask is if you can reduce your risk of dying by drinking coffee? This seems logical but now there is solid evidence reported in an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The report is entitled Association of coffee drinking and cause-specific mortality and is published in volume 366. Here is what it says about whether you can reduce your risk of dying by drinking coffee. How the Study Was Set Up The researchers examined the association of coffee drinking with subsequent total and cause specific mortality among 229,119 men and 173,141 women in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study who were 50 to 71 years of age at baseline. Participants with cancer, heart disease, and stroke at the start of the study were excluded. Coffee consumption was assessed once at baseline. What the Researchers Found The study group was followed from 1995 to 2008. A history of smoking and other factors that increase the likelihood of dying were statistically adjusted for. The numbers of men and women who died during the course of the study was 33,731 and 18,784 respectively. When adjusted for so-called confounding factors, such as smoking, there was a statistically lower likelihood of dying if you were a coffee drinker. And it turns out that you could further reduce your risk of dying by drinking coffee in larger quantities. Using a measure called a hazard ratio the researchers looked at men and women who drank up to six cups of coffee a day. Compared to those who did not drink coffee the coffee drinkers had a decreased risk of dying with every extra cup a day consumed.
