RYC Tell Tales Commodore’s Log by Peter Cipes Board Optimistic About 2016 Events Last month I wrote about resolutions. This month I would like to present a progress report. The Board had a marathon meeting in January (see meeting minutes in this issue). After much serious discussion and some tinkering we approved the budget and the schedule for 2016. Both will be formally presented at the Salmon Bake. The Salmon Bake is our traditional pre-season kick-off event. This year we have a really fun evening planned, with a special guest speaker, event signups, raf- fles and a “full pool pool”, not to mention some great food and company. Oh, and the semi-annual Club busi- ness meeting (if you think this is the really fun part, then you might be a good candidate to be on the Board next year!). Please check your mailbox for your formal invi- tation, and please remember to R. S. V. P.! Both the schedule and the budget as approved are based on an optimistic outlook. Some of that opti- mism is based on the weather, and we all know what they say about folks who try to predict the weather. As far as I know there are no foreigners on the board; and we’d like to think that none of us are fools (although the jury may still be out). But a lot of our optimism is based on things we can control. The approved budget is based on an opti- mistic view of club memberships. This is something we can all help to achieve. If you are a current club mem- ber, please remember to renew your membership. If you are a former club member, please consider rejoining. If you know someone who enjoys boats but is not yet a member, please urge them to join. Remember that re- newing members get a discount when their dues are paid on or before the Salmon Bake. Our goals might be optimistic but they are at- tainable. Please help us to make them a reality! RYC 2016 Calendar February 17 Wednesday—BUSINESS—Board Meets 19 Friday—SOCIAL—Mt. RYC’s traditional free sailing course will once again be offered to the public and club members alike. It is a unique opportunity for community members interested in get-ting their first sailing experience to learn some basics and get out on the water. All that is required is some sunscreen, ap-propriate footwear and a sense of adventure. RYC will post more details as the event approaches, If you are interested in taking the class send an inquiry through the contact us page on the website (http://www.rogueyachtclub.org) and the event organizer will contact you with additional information as the date approaches. The plan as of the date of this posting is to hold the event at Lost Creek Lake at 1:00 p. m.

This year’s Spring Dinghy Series will be held Wednesdays on Emigrant Lake from April 6 through June 15. Skippers meet at 5:15 p. m.. Bring your Laser, Sunfish or other small boat.. There is a google group email that provides updates on race plans for a given week - if you want to subscribe to the email list contact Jay Harland or John Spillman to be in the know! We typically get in 3-4 races per night and finish with a little socializing post-race. Lasers and other boats with dollies can easily launch from the west shore which is where the race arena is. Dinghies with trailers big-ger than light weight dollies may launch from the county launch ramps. Hope to see you on the water! Broadwater Solo Trophy Race & Raft-up June 4 This race will be held using a course set up with tem-porary marks at Lost Creek Lake. Raft-up social following racing. Solo racing is not required but is encouraged. Multiple classes are awarded. Skippers meeting at 2:00 p. m. at the re-sort. Dinghies with dollies can easily launch from the "beach shore" southwest of the resort which is adjacent to the racing area. Please bring a dish to share for the pot-luck raft up. All races scheduled below this notice are depen-dent on water conditions at Howard Prairie Lake. I c e B r e a k e r Tr o p h y R a c e J u n e 1 1 The icebreaker trophy race is a Portsmouth handicap all boats race. Noon skippers meeting- racing at 1:00 p. m. or as stated at the skippers meeting. This race will be preceded by a Rules Clinic at 11:00am if interest is expressed by the membership. If you are interested in a rules clinic please email Jay Harland at [email protected] .

Jensen Distance Trophy Race June 25 This race is a distance race. Course will be deter-mined based upon the water levels. Typically it is run as a PHRF pursuit race. Small boats with no PHRF rating will be given a rating based upon the standard conversion formula from Portsmouth. All boats are welcome! After the racing there will be a social potluck. Bring something to throw on the grill and a side to share. BYOB. Stamm Memorial Trophy Race July 9

This is an all boats Portsmouth handicap trophy race. Skippers meeting at 1:00 p. m.. Planned for three races. This is typically the most prestigious and well attended race day of the season. This race is also a great tune-up for the regatta. RYC Southern Cascades Regatta July 23-24

As of this posting RYC is cautiously optimistic that we can bring back our regatta in 2016. Snowpack is already near the average totals for the entire season. A couple more good storms and our water situation should improve dramatically. Check the regatta page on the website for the latest updates. Commodore's Cup and Johnston Trophy August 13 This day is for racing newbies and champions alike. The Commodore's Cup is the annual Portsmouth Trophy race for new racers in their first year or two of racing. It is for all boats. A second fleet will be run this day which is the best six finishers of the four prior trophy races (Broadwater Solo, Ice-breaker, Jensen, and Stamm). The top four finishers from those trophy races will be invited to race in Sunfish for the Johnston Trophy. Skippers meeting is at 1:00 p. m. After the racing there will be a social potluck. Bring something to throw on the grill and a side to share. BYOB.

Jay Harland made a motion to accept Dale’s resignation and Karen’s appointment. Jeanne Barbara seconded. The motion passed unanimously. 2) Dick Barbara and Peter Cipes went to Chase Bank to add Peter and remove Dick as a signer Club account. 3) Cindy Broadwater confirmed that our 2015 Corporate Tax Statement is due on March 15, 2016. 4) ASA and US Sailing Associations dues have been paid for 2016. Reports: The December, 2015 E- Board Meeting Minutes were read and approved. The December, 2015 Treasurer’s Report was reviewed and approved. Old Business: 1) BOAT REGISTRATIONS: Work is continuing with

regard to the Sunfish and Edson titles and registrations. Peter Cipes will fill out the required forms for getting the boats titled and registered. The boats will all need to be inspected by the Sheriff’s Marine Division prior to issuance of “OR Numbers” by the Marine Board. Dick Barbara has agreed to tow the Sunfish (3) to the Sher-iff’s department before the Spring Series. We will make sure that all required safety equipment is on each boat, and will request that the Sheriff do a safety inspection at that time. We will still need someone to tow the Edson to the Sheriff’s department to get titled and registered.

2) INSURANCE: We still need an insurance certificate from the Boy Scouts naming RYC as additionally insured. Jay is contacting the troop leader to request the certificate. 3) BOAT STORAGE: Roger Schnoes reports that rescue boat and barge are still tarped and good. Jay will order a new and improved tarp for the Sunfish. 4) BUDGET: The Board reviewed and discussed the budget presented by Cindy Broadwater and made changes. Peter Cipes made a motion to approve the budget, with said changes. Jeanne Barbara seconded. The board voted 6 - 1 to approve the budget. The approved budget will be presented and available for member review at the Salmon Bake. 5) SCHEDULE: The board reviewed and discussed the schedule of racing and events presented by Jay Harland. Some dates were adjusted and social events were added. Peter Cipes made a motion to approve the schedule as amended. Dick Barbara seconded. The board voted unanimously to ap-prove the schedule. The schedule is currently posted on the website and will be formally presented to the membership at the Salmon Bake 6) AUDIT RYC BOOKS: Cindy Broadwater is still work-ing on contacting Kristi to ask if she is willing to do an audit. 7) SALMON BAKE: Michael Gutman will handle arrange-ments and logistics for food, BBQ’s and cooks for the Salmon

Bake. It was decided that we would add some kind of hot side dish to the meat and fish as that has been a little lean in the past couple of years. Peter and Karen Cipes will work on sending out invitations to past and present members in an effort to boost attendance and membership. We will request RSVP’s. Peter Cipes will work on the Agenda for the Semi-Annual Members Meeting, Steve Lambert of Jackson County Parks will be a speaker. We spoke briefly about a 50/50 Raffle and a raffle for a free moorage donated by Jackson County Parks. The board will work on the Salmon Bake plans over the next month, to be completed by the next board meeting. 9) FREE SAIL CLASS: Dick Barbara is not able to be in charge of the Free Sail class this year. We must find someone to volunteer for that. 10) BOY SCOUT REGATTA: Dick Barbara agreed to be the RYC liaison for the Boy Scout Regatta. He will coordi-nate with Troop Leader David Markowski. 11) ST. MARY’S SAILING: Dick Barbara also agreed to be the RYC liaison for the St. Mary’s Sailing day. He will coordinate with St. Mary’s. NEW BUSINESS: 1) The board kindly thanks Michael Ellis for all his help re-searching the possibility of club sailing at Lake of the Woods. We are optimistic that water levels will allow us to primarily use Howard Prairie, with some events at Lost Creek. We will keep Lake of the Woods in mind if a back up plan is required. 2) Peter Cipes met with Steve Lambert from Jackson County Parks to discuss the new dock project. Details of that meet-ing will be in the February Telltales, Commodore’s Log. 3) Mark Warwick has agreed to do some research about our water prognosis for Howard Prairie this coming season. NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 6pm at Jay Harland’s office. The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 pm
