RediPower Safety Instructions

The goal of Chicago Pneumatic andDesoutter is to produce tools that helpthe operator work safely andefficiently. The most important safety device forthis or any other tool is the operator.Care and good judgement are the bestprotection against injury. All possible hazards cannot be coveredhere, but we have tried to highlightsome of the important ones.

Individuals should look for and obeyCaution, Warning and Danger signsplaced on tools, and displayed in theworkplace. Operators should read andfollow safety instructions packed witheach tool. For a copy of theseinstructions, contact your local ChicagoPneumatic / Desoutter representative.

Learn how each tool works. Even ifyou have previously used similar tools,carefully check out each tool beforeyou use it. Get the ‘feel’ of it andknow its capabilities, limitations,potential hazards, how it operatesand how it stops.

All tools are designed to operate at aline pressure of 6.3 bar +/- 0.15bar inaccordance with ISO2787.

Sound levels +/- 3dB(A)* measured inaccordance with CAGI-PNEUROP testcode or PNEUROP PN8NTC1.2.Vibration values* measured inaccordance with ISO 8662.

*These declared values were obtainedby laboratory testing in compliancewith stated standards and are notadequate for risk assessments. Valuesmeasured in individual work placesmay be higher than the declaredvalues. The actual exposure valuesand risk of harm expected by anindividual are unique and depend uponthe way the user works, the workplaceand the work station design, as well asupon the exposure time and thephysical condition of the user. Compressed Air Hazards

• Air under pressure can cause injury.Never point an air hose at yourself oranyone else. Never blow yourclothes free of dust with compressedair. Always direct exhaust air awayfrom yourself and others in the work area.

• Always check for damaged or loosehoses and fittings before using an air tool, and replace if necessary.Whipping hoses can cause seriousinjury.

• Disconnect the tool from the airsupply when not in use, beforechanging accessories, setting thetorque, or when making repairs.

• Do not exceed rated air pressure toincrease the output of the tool. This could cause injury and shortentool life.

• Do not assemble quick coupler onthe tool. Vibration can causebreakage resulting in a whipping airhose. Instead, use quick couplers onthe end of a short leader hose.

• When universal twist couplings areused, lock pins must be installed toprevent accidental hosedisconnection.

• Air tools are not intended for use inexplosive atmospheres and are notinsulated for contact with electricpower sources.

Projectile Hazards

• Always wear impact resistant eyeand face protection when involvedwith or near the operation or repairof tools.

Breathing Hazards

• Proper breathing protection must beworn when working with materials,which produce airborne particles.

Noise Hazards

• Hearing loss can result fromprolonged exposure to excessivesound levels.

• Use hearing protection asrecommended by your employer orOccupational Health and SafetyRegulations.

Vibration Hazards

• Repetitive work motions, awkwardpositions, and exposure to vibrationmay be harmful to your hands andarms.

• If numbness, tingling, pain orwhitening of the skin occurs, stopusing tool and consult a physician.

Entanglement Hazards

• To reduce the risk of injury fromentanglement, do not wear looseclothing when using rotatingaccessories.

Additional Hazards

• Slip/Trip/Fall is a major cause ofserious injury or death. Beware ofexcessive hose/cord left on thewalking or work surface.

• Operators and maintenancepersonnel must be physically fit toperform job tasks, and handle thebulk, weight and power of the tool.

• Deburring tools should be used toreduce the risk of cuts and abrasionsdue to burrs.

• Wear gloves to protect hands fromsharp edges.

Specific Safety Instructions for Power Tool Groups

In addition to the General SafetyInstructions, the following are safetyinstructions and warnings that apply tothe safe operation of specific power tool groups.

Impact Wrenches

• Never use hand sockets. Use onlyimpact sockets in good condition.Sockets in poor condition reduceimpact power and could also shatter,resulting in personal injury.

• When using a universal joint, neveroperate the tool off the work. It mayrun too fast and cause the joint to bethrown from the tool.

• Always use the simplest hook uppossible. Long springy extensionbars and adapters absorb impactpower and could break looseresulting in personal injury. Instead,use deep sockets wherever possible.

• For tools using the pin and o-ringsocket retainer, use the o-ring tosecurely retain the socket pin or usea one-piece retainer ring to retainsocket.

• Serious injury can result from over-torqued or under-torqued fasteners,which can break, or loosen andseparate. Released assemblies canbecome projectiles. Assembliesrequiring a specific torque must bechecked using a torque meter.NOTE: So-called “click” torquewrenches do not check for potentiallydangerous over-torqued conditions.

Abrasive Tools

• Never mount a grinding wheel on asander.

• Never use a grinding wheel rated at a speed lower than the air grinder speed.

• All grinding wheels andpolishing/sanding accessories shouldbe checked for cracks or otherdamage before mounting and use.

• Always use the recommended wheelguard to prevent injury whenperforming grinding operations. If aguard has withstood wheel or diskbreakage, it must be replaced.

• Position a guard between thegrinding wheel or disc and the

operator. Use barriers to protectothers from fragments and grinding sparks.

• Make sure grinding wheels aremounted according tomanufacturer’s specifications; alwaysuse correct mounting flanges.

• Before grinding, test grinding wheelby briefly running tool at full throttle.Be sure to use a barrier (such asunder a heavy worktable) to protectyourself from possible broken wheelparts.

• Never tamper with or remove aspeed governor from a tool to makeit run faster. Periodically check toolspeed with a tachometer.

Ratchet Wrenches

• Never use hand sockets. Use onlypower drive sockets.

• To reduce the risk of injury, alwayssupport the handle securely in thedirection opposite of the spindlerotation to minimize torque reaction.

Drills

• Keep away from rotating bit andchuck. You can become cut orburned if you come in contact withthe drill bit, chips/swarf or worksurface.

• Use intermittent drill pressure toavoid long shaved chips/swarf.

• The drill bit can suddenly bind andcause the work piece or tool to rotatecausing arm and shoulder injuries.

• It is recommended that side handlesare used for operator comfort andsafety on high torque drillingapplications above 2.6 lbft (3.5Nm)on straight case tools and 8.5lbft(11.5Nm) on pistol grip drills. Drillswith a chuck capacity larger than3/8” (10mm) should always be usedwith a side handle.

Hammers

• All chisels, rivet sets and otherassociated accessories should bechecked for cracks, excessive wear,

or other physical damage beforeeach use. Accessories that showsigns of damage should be replacedimmediately.

• Never use a tool with out the properaccessory retainer.

Other Tools (e.g. Screwdrivers,Shears, Saws, etc.)

• Specific instructions/warningsaffecting this group of tools arecontained in product-specificdocuments accompanying eachproduct.

Accessories

• Always use accessories of correctsize and design for the tool. Tool andaccessories must not be modified inany way.

• Never use a tool without the properaccessory retainer.
