DETROIT RED WINGSTeam History
REDWINGSTODAY 5
HISTORY BEHIND THE NAMEDetroit joined the NHL for the 1926-27 season and was known as the Cougars. After an unsuccessful four years of play, coach Jack Adams thought a name change might help spur a winning season. The name was changed to the Falcons beginning with the 1930-31 season. When James Norris, Sr. purchased the hockey franchise in 1932, he changed the name a third time to the Red Wings. Red was a part of the name because the existing uniforms were red and white.
TEAM COLORSLittle is known about why red and white were chosen for the team’s color back in 1926. However, red is an emotionally charged color, demonstrating passion, strength, energy, fire and excitement. And initially, the sport of ice hockey, with roots dating back to the mid-1880s, was played outdoors surrounded by snow, thus the color white. The colors of red and white do indeed seem fitting for an energetic hockey team that provides so much excitement to its fans.
THE LOGOAfter James Norris, Sr. changed the name from the Falcons to the Red Wings, he searched for a new logo. He was reminded of the logo worn by the Montreal Winged Wheelers – an amateur hockey team he had played for years before as member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. That logo’s wheeled center seemed quite appropriate for Detroit, a city that had put the world on wheels, and the wing would denote speed as the players soared around the rink in smooth flight.
EVOLUTION OF THE LOGOThe original Red Wings logo was rather crude, but it has been refined over the years. When Mike and Marian Ilitch purchased the team in 1982, they enlarged the logo on the game jerseys to demonstrate the pride they felt for the hockey team and the franchise’s long and rich history.

a fter a grueling 114-game sea-son culminating in a Game
7 loss of the Stanley Cup finals, it’s no surprise that the Red Wings took a much-needed break away from hockey this summer.
Like the average person on a vaca-tion, athletes like to catch-up on ac-tivities that they don’t have time for during the regular-season. Return-ing home to spend time with family and close friends is a priority for the Wings when it comes to recharging their batteries.
“[I] went to the southern part of Sweden where my girlfriend is from and that was really relaxing,” Niklas Kronwall said. “Just go down there and see that part of Sweden that I’ve never seen before.”
Captain Nicklas Lidstrom spent seven weeks back home in Sweden
where he was out on the lake when the weather was nice. The summer gives him a chance to go wakeboard-ing, which he says he is “not very good, but I can stay up on it.”
Lidstrom wasn’t the only one logging minutes at the lake. Jonathan Ericsson got a boat this summer so he spent a fair amount of time waterskiing and tubing. Justin Abdelkader went home to Muskegon, Mich., where he was also out on the lake to “enjoy the waterfront of Lake Michigan” when he wasn’t taking classes or working out at Michigan State.
With the 2010 Winter Olympics in February, the national federations held orientation camps or meetings to prepare for the tournament. Hen-rik Zetterberg and five other Swedish Red Wings players, including Wings goalie prospect Daniel Larsson,

attended Sweden’s pre-Olympic orientation meeting. On the second day, the Swedes went golfing and finished the day at a U2 concert.
There was no on-ice component to the Olympic orientation meeting because as Zetterberg put it, “I don’t think you need to get on the ice in the summer for a tournament that starts in February.”
Ville Leino, who earned a roster spot with the Wings this season, is more musically inclined than many of his teammates and it’s reflective in his summer activities as he likes to travel, attend rock concerts, and play guitar.
“I went to Amsterdam and saw U2 there so that was pretty nice,” Lei-no said. “I saw a few Finnish bands and other little smaller bands back home.”
Veteran Kirk Maltby had a relax-ing off-season, taking a vacation to Turks and Caicos Islands before going on a golf trip with a friend to Wisconsin.
Forward Dan Cleary opted to stay in Michigan this summer rather than head to his usual summer home in California. With his wife expect-ing, he felt it was the best option and didn’t want the hassle of moving. In spite of the birth of his daughter in

late July, Cleary has surprisingly been able to get plenty of sleep this sum-mer. He spent the summer golfing, including an appearance at the Buick Open Pro-Am alongside Maltby.
Players also have to maintain a top-level physique and stamina through-out the summer so after a few weeks of rest in the off-season, players return to their respective workout routines.
Maltby describes his summer regi-men as “40 to 50 minutes of cardio, depending on what you are doing that particular day as far as weights or speed training or whatever it is so
it lasts anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours.”
Each player has their own rou-tine, but Zetterberg and Kronwall limit their workouts to weekdays. Lidstrom and Kronwall like to mix things up by doing weights, station-ary bike, running, or other alterna-tive ways of staying in shape like playing tennis.
Whether the player was golfing or boating, the Red Wings were well-represented around the world this summer, and now seem refreshed and ready for a long, grueling season.

Red Wings Community TourThe Detroit Red Wings officially “broke
away” to Training Camp on Thursday, Sept.
10th, as Niklas Kronwall, Jimmy Howard,
Jonathan Ericsson, Johan Franzen, Brett
Lebda, Valtteri Filppula, Ville Leino and
Henrik Zetterberg took some time to thank
their fans throughout the State of Michigan
while heading to Traverse City. Four players
each headed East and West through the
state, making stops at two veterans hospitals
and middle schools in Grand Rapids and
Midland, MI.
This marks the second straight year two
groups of Red Wings have taken an early
departure for camp in order to visit with
fans. Last season, the Wings visited Selfridge
Air National Guard Base, the State National
Guard Headquarters, DeVos Children’s
Hospital in Grand Rapids and a middle
school in Saginaw.
e ach season the Detroit Red Wings players, coaches and staff dedicate
themselves and their time to assist the Metro Detroit community. The Detroit Red Wings Community Relations department assists with local charities’ fundraising efforts with player and staff appearances, autographed memorabilia donations and in-arena programs that help raise funds and items in support of several of the Detroit community needs. Included in this group are the Red Wings annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game, scheduled for October 10th when the
Wings host the Washington Capitals, the
smoke detector collection program, chaired by
forward Henrik Zetterberg and the Red Wings
Wish Club chaired by defenseman Niklas
Kronwall. Through the Wish Club partnership
with Children’s Hospital of Michigan, fans
who make a donation to Children’s can
have their birthday, anniversary, wedding
or engagement wish played on the Joe Louis
Arena Scoreboard during a Red Wings game.
For more information on the Wish Club, call

Veteran forward Jason Williams is hoping that his second stint
with the Red Wings means he’s in Hockeytown to stay.
Williams, who began his career in Detroit, has been with four NHL teams in the last three seasons (Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta and Columbus). But when the Wings contacted him this summer, he was happy to return, signing a one-year deal in August.
“It’s a relief, coming back to a spot where I basically started my career,” Williams said. “It’s nice, and I’m looking forward to it.”
The 29-year-old, who was a mem-ber of the Wings’ 2002 Stanley Cup champion roster, talked about rejoining his old team and once again playing in front of the Joe Louis Arena crowd.
“I’m looking forward to the oppor-tunity, and getting into a dressing room and an area where I know a lot of people,” said Williams, who first signed with the Wings as an undraft-ed free agent in 2000. “My first time when I was here, the people of Detroit, the fans of Detroit, they always treat-ed me well, and I met a lot of great people here.
“I’ve been tossed around a little bit the last couple years, and to get back into a hockey market, an Original Six team, it’s something as a player that you wish for.”
The veteran right winger said that Wings’ fans will see a more versatile Williams this season.
“Defensively, that was the knock against me the last few years,” he said. “I’ve tried to work on that and become a better all-around player

instead of just a one-sided player.”“It’s great to have him back,” Wings
captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. “He played here before, he knows the coaches, he knows our system, he knows the players that are here. It will be an easy transition for him to start playing with us again.”
Williams said that he kept in touch with many of the players while he was away, and visited with them when he was in town for a game. He also compared his situation to team-mate Dan Cleary’s, when he joined the Wings in 2005.
“I remember him coming into training camp not really having a contract, and he was a guy that was kind of tossed around a little bit,” Williams said. “He got into a great spot, had himself a great year, and you look at it now, he’s got a Stanley Cup and he’s a go-to guy here and he’s considered for Team Canada. I look at him and see that he can do it, and hopefully I can do that same thing.”
Red Wings radio announcer Ken Kal thinks Williams can fill the void left by Mikael Samuelsson (who left

for Vancouver via free agency) on the Wings’ power play. Williams posted a career-high 21 goals and 37 assists with the Wings in 2005-06.
“He’s got a great shot, he’s an excellent skater, and what I like about him is that he’s a right-handed shot, and he’ll be used especially on the power play on the point,” Kal said. “Anytime you can get a right-handed shot, that can fire the puck -- and he’s
got a heck of a shot -- I think it’s an advantage to your power play.”
Williams, however, wants to bring more than a shot to the Wings come playoff time.
“I miss that playoff atmosphere,” he said, “and I’m hoping I can bring some energy and enthusiasm to the guys in the dressing room to help them help me get back to winning the Cup again.”

ALumNIrEuNIoNA Q&A wITHrEED LArSoNBy Bill roose
Do you keep in touch with any of your former Red Wings teammates?
Paul Woods does radio and comes to town, and I still talk to (Dennis) Polonich and (Dennis) Hextall. I go out to Aspen (Colo.) every year with the alumni and see them then.
Which of the current Red Wings is your favorite? It’s tough. I would say (Nicklas) Lidstrom and (Henrik)
Zetterberg. They get what the NHL is all about. I was a defenseman and Lidstrom has been a great player and leader.
What was your favorite memory as a Red Wing?My first All Star Game was in Buffalo, but I’ll always
remember the All-Star Game in Detroit with Gordie Howe and the ovation that he received. That was a great moment when he was introduced and I was next to him in line.
Which of the guys you played with was the toughest? It has to be a tie. I don’t know how to pick between
(Bob) Probert and (Joe) Kocur. If they had fear they certainly didn’t know how to show it. Those two guys I saw do more damage than anybody else.
Who was the funniest? There were a lot of them with Hextall and Polonich pulling
pranks. But the funniest and hardest I’ve laugh has been around Paul Woods. When I first got married and I was home for the summer in northern Minnesota, he called my wife and told her that he was an encyclopedia salesman. He told that I was illiterate and that these books would help me. When I got home, she told me that an encyclopedia salesman had called and hold her this story. I never laughed to hard.
Who had the biggest heart?I would say Stevie Yzerman and Paul Woods. There were
a lot of guys that I played with that were so dedicated and had so much heart. But Yzerman has to be No. 1. Hextall, for his body and size, is up there, but for what Yzerman did, donating body body, he sure paid the price.
What was your favorite restaurant in metro Detroit? There are so many, but Mitch’s on Cass Lake, Chuck
Joseph’s (now O’Mara’s) in Berkley, and Carl’s Chop House. But Mitch’s on Cass Lake was No. 1.
How has the NHL changed since you played? The big difference is how they treat the players.
Conditioning is the big change. There aren’t too many guys with a cigarette and a beer in their hands. And instead of everyone having one big line, everyone has four lines now. The combination of hockey from North America and Europe has mingled, and the quick passes -- the third and fourth pass -- are better. It’s all opened up now.
Toughest team (other than the Red Wings) when you played?
I have to mention three teams when I played. Montreal was winning the Cup four times in a row with those guys. They had the blueprint, and it was hard to get 15 shots on them in 60 minutes. Then the Islanders took over after that. Penalty-killing and power-play were scary with a big, physical team. Then Edmonton, you knew you could score goals on them, but they had so much depth and speed. They were a pretty scary team that turned it up a notch on their speed from that Montreal team.
Who’d you sit next to in the dressing room? That is the hardest to answer. I know one was John Barrett,
and there was Woodie and Yzerman for awhile. I use to tease people by telling them that we used to take three team pictures a year, because we had a ton of changes back then.
What do you love most about the game? There are so many things that get into your blood.
Hockey players are a special breed of person and I don’t think you lose the aspects of the game: gliding on the ice, shooting and passing. There are so many facets of the game that you never get board with. Then there’s the freedom for imagination and the speed in this game, which is just amazing.
Who had the greatest influence on your career?Well, growing up in Minnesota, it started with watching
the Blackhawks on TV before the North Stars came to town. So it had to be Bobby Hull, Bobby Orr and the Blackhawks’ Game of the Week every Sunday.
What advise would you give to kids playing today? What I share with the kids now is that you don’t have to
make it to the pros to get the most out of this game. You can’t manufacture a pro anyway, so the kids coming up don’t need the parents lobbying for them. It doesn’t work. But don’t feel like a failure if you don’t make it to the pros. Just have fun playing this great game.
A 14-year NHL veteran, Reed Larson played more than nine seasons with the Red Wings at the beginning of his pro career from 1976-86. A three-time All Star, he was traded during the 1985-86, leaving Detroit as the fifth all-time scorer in franchise history with 570 points in 708 games. The former defenseman talks fondly about his Red Wings memories:
