Matrioshka from Kiev arrived to Egypt over Germany The history of the Matryoshka Doll goes back to 1890, when Vasily Zvyozdochkin produced the first set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other, and consisting of eight dolls. Dieter Gramkow and his wife Maria-Rita from Germany, regular guests of the guest house Living with Art, presented a great gift to A lisa, daughter of the owners of the Red Sea Bulletin. It was a matryoshka with 30 pieces, the largest 3Scm high and the smallest as tiny as a rice corn, each one a hand-painted piece of art. The matryoshka was a welfarepresent to Dieter from the employees of his printing house in Ukraine 20 years ago. For A lisa, it was a big honor to receive this present. Many thanks go to Dieter and Maria-Rita for this treasure ..

CREAT PARTIES AT ALCHEMY Celebrating International Woman's Day.

Great Party at Alchemy, the new outlet of Sind bad Aqua Hotel & Spa. Twenty three hundred people celebrated the International Woman's Day with dj Nicole, dj Sam and dj Carlos. Go-go dancers, fire shows and many other activities entertained all the guests and continued non-stop through the whole night.

At another Party on the 24th of April, Hurghada's pulsated at a stronger beat with the double impact of Tamer Fouda & DJ Zio who were trembling the underworld. It was all about the BASS . ..

It was about 20 years ago that Sherif Lotfy opened his restaurant. It was one of the few places on Sheraton road in Sakala at the time. Since then Moby Dick has developed as a meeting place for business men and is a favorite among the local residents when it comes to quality food at moderate prices. Yummy are the filet steaks and the camel steaks. The seafood cannot be fresher as it is always from the catch of the day, You could be ver~ lucky if Sherif comes back from \t r e mo,nililg fishi~g trip with r RKd Sea Tyna! I

Fighting Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with a Natural Energy Diet Chronic fatigue syndrome leaves most patients with little energy, but many experts believe that what you eat can help. It can be especially useful in the upcoming hot summer season and during the time of the fast ..

Eating a healthy diet and getting the best nutrition can help you manage many illnesses, and that doesn't exclude the persistent tiredness and mental strain of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

By eating the right foods we all can give ourselves more natural energy. For chronic fatigue patients, the No. 1 piece of advice is to avoid processed, refined carbohydrates, such as the sugar or white flour found in foods such as white bread, crackers, cookies, cakes, and soda. Sugar has multiple detrimental effects in CFS patients. It suppresses the immune system, increases inflammation, and stimulates yeast overgrowth in the intestines. The list of what you can eat to help restore natural energy is much larger - and much better - than what you have to avoid . And here again, these are foods most people should be eating anyway. Highly recommend a low-carb diet of unprocessed and organic foods. Focus on wild-caught fish, organic vegetables, grass-fed meats, organic eggs, and full-fat cheeses. Add dark-colored fruits, including berries, which are also recommended. It's also important to increase water, salt, and your overall protein intake. Because of the adrenal hormone levels being inadequate, people become dehydrated and need increased salt and water. The exception would be for patients with high blood pressure or heart failure. Increasing protein intake tends to help maintain a stable blood sugar. However, different approaches help different people, remember that each person is different, and one should eat what overall leaves them feeling the best. Sugars may leave you feeling better immediately, but then leave you feeling horrible hours later. Take some time to see how foods affect your overall well-being.

Try this stay-awake strategy: Snack on perfectly portable, fatigue-fighting foods, like whole grain crackers, walnuts, dark chocolate, and watermelon. These nine picks will perk you up in no time.

Pumpkin seed (the fatigue-fighter: Magnesium) If your 30-minute workout leaves you feeling like you just climbed Mt. Everest, you might be low on magnesium. Women with magnesium deficiencies required more oxygen uptake during physical activity, used more energy, and therefore tired more easily. Snack on 1/4 cup of pumpkin seeds and you'll take care of about half of your recommended daily allowance, 310 mg for women (320 mg for ages 31 +) and 400 mg for men ( 420 mg for ages 31 + ).

Yogurt (the fatigue-fighter: Probiotics) A stomach ache could spell sleepiness, Because research suggests that an imbalance in microor-ganis digestive tract is partially to blame for CFS, improvements in fatigue symptoms, physi or mental health can be recognized after regular yogurt intake for a couple of weeks.

Page 28: Red Sea Bulletin - Issue May/June 2015

Wheat Bran Cereal (the fatigue-fighter: Fiber) You know that fiber can help you fight fat, and it turns out the nutrient can also help you feel more awake. People who eat high-fiber wheat bran cereal suffer less emotional distress, experience fewer cognitive difficulties and less fatigue. Scientists credited these improvements to better digestive health.

Whole Grains (the fatigue-fighter: Complex carbohydrates, They might be a diet taboo, but carbs are essential to boosting energy. To stay out of a slump, pick complex carbohydrates such as whole grain crackers or a bowl of oatmeal over refined carbs, like foods made from white flour. The body digests and releases complex carbs slowly, keeping your blood sugar (and your mood) stable. Simple sugars, like those found in sweets and processed foods, on the other hand, provide a quick burst of energy, but cause your blood sugar to plummet just as quickly as it spiked .

Nuts are some of the best foods to beat fatigue and fight hunger. Nuts that provide energy include almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, and walnuts. Eating raw, unsalted nuts provide the most energy because they contain the most nutrients. Walnuts (the fatigue-fighter: Omega-3 fatty acids) Patients with CFS had low levels of omega-3 fatty acids. The alpha-linolenic acid & the omega-3 fatty acid found in walnuts may help relieve depression symptoms, which commonly contribute to CFS.

Dark Chocolate (the fatigue-fighter: Polyphenols) If you're going to spring for sweets, be smart about your selection . Scientists suggest that polyphenols in dark chocolate increase levels of the happiness-boosting brain chemical serotonin and thus reduce feelings of fatigue.

Green I Black Tea The fatigue-fighters: Caffeine and !-thiamine Coffee beats out tea when it comes to caffeine, but your cup of joy is missing an important fatigue-fighting ingredient: !-thiamine. When paired with caffeine, the amino acid found naturally in tea improves cognition more effectively than caffeine alone. A combination of caffeine (150 mg) and !-thiamine (250 mg ) improve alertness, memory, and reaction time as well a$ ~eased mental fatigue.

Watermelon (the fatigue-fighter: Water) If you're feeling fatigued on a hot day or after a sweaty workout, the cause may be as simptl as dehydration, and the fix as easy as enjoying a delicious slice of summer fruit. Hydrating with water-dense foods won't pack on the pounds.

Red Bell Pepper (Paprika) - the fatigue-fighter: Vitamin C Vitamin C is more than a cold fighter-the antioxidant also helps reduce oxidative stress, the result of too many free radicals in the body, another contributor to CFS. To get your Vitamin C fix, enjoy 1 cup of sliced red bell pepper and you'll squeeze in almost 200% of your daily recommended vitamin C-that's more than the amount in an entire orange. Thai Salads

5- Yam Khamin Khao Kung

Yam pia duk fu, with the green mango dressing in a bowl on the side. Yam (Thai pronunciation: [jam]) litera lly means "mix'1 but in Thai cu isine it normally refers to a type of salad-like dishes in the culinary repertoire of Tha iland. In Thai cuisine one can eat a variation of yam style salad every day. Yom con be mode with a wide variety of ingredients as its main ingredient and nearly any type of protein, vegetable, fruit, herb, spice, and noodle, or combinations thereof, is possible. The main ingredient con be row, pickled, fermented, sun-dried, smoked, steamed, parboiled, boiled, gri lled, baked, stir-fried or deep-fried, or combinations thereof. Besides the main ingredient, the basic recipe of a yam will nearly always contain sliced fresh shal lots or onions, fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, and fresh or dried chil lies. When herbs ore used, it is usually Chinese celery, sometimes in combination with other fresh herbs such as spearmint, coriander leaves, spring onions and culantro. Very often, sliced tomatoes ore also added in, or finely slices fresh spices such as lemongrass, ginger, galangol, or khamin khao (l it. "white turmeric"). Examples of yam style salads are yam nuea yang with sliced gri lled beef, yam khai dao with fried egg, yam tole with mixed seafood, yam mu yo with a pork sausage resembl ing liverwurst, or yam wunsen with gloss noodles. Some yam salads can use only herbs, spices and nuts as their main ingredient, such as yam tokhroi met momuong himophan with sliced lemongross and cashew nuts, or with stir-fried vegetables, such as water mimosa in yam phok krochet. Depending on the salad, anything from crispy fried onions, crunchy nuts or seeds, to toasted coconut flakes con also be added to the mix to enhance the flavours, colours and textures. Also, in many yam salads where the main ingred ient is not meat, cooked minced pork con be added for extra sovouriness, as often happens in yam wunsen (glass noodle sa lad) . After one look at the menu of a khao tom kui (pla in rice congee) restaurant, it is clear that nearly any ingredient that one can imagine con be used to make a yam style salad. To name a few: yam kho i khem (salted duck eggs), yam kung chiang (dry Chinese sweet pork sausage), yam mu krop {Ch inese crispy pork), and yam phak kat dong (Chinese pickled cabbage). These yam that ore eaten with pla in rice congee tend to remain more simple in their preparation, containing only the basic "dressing" of lime ju ice, row onion or shallot, chi llies, sugar and fish sauce in addition to the main ingredient, with on ly some celery added where needed.

GERMAN HOTEL SCHOOL ELGOUNA

Languages & Tourism

This combination belongs together ever since and there is little doubt that language skills are an absolute necessity in tourism. Waiters, receptionists, tourist guides, animators, representatives and all kinds of people working in the hospitality industry have to be able to communicate with foreign guest and customers. Languages are therefore a very important part of tourism all over the world.

Let's imagine a model situation when you would come to a foreign country for vacation or a long weekend trip just to enjoy your free time and relax. However, the employees at the front office or in the restaurant, or the entire hotel staff would start talking to you in their native language. Let alone if the menu, price list or other things would be written only in the language of the country. A terrible scenario!

In the competitive and constantly changing tourism industry, it is a challenge to develop customer contact optimally and continuously. As it is more and more difficult to differentiate yourself from the competition, a strong connection with guests must go hand in hand with outstanding customer communication. Therefore the German Hotel School El Gauna focuses on teaching, training and improving the students· language skills with constant efforts and various methods.

English is by far the most important language worldwide in international communication and we give 6 lessons per week. But we chose - in order to fulfill our vocational cooperation with the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce - to teach the German language preferential with 24 lessons in the first term.

Not only our students benefit from our efforts in language education - we also offer courses for beginners and advanced level participants to hotels and other tourism establishments. The German Hotel School El Gauna is well known in the Red Sea area for its highly qualified body of language teachers. We wish to propel the development of Egyptian tourism not only by educating young people but also by improving the service quality.

If that is your aim too, get more information about our German and English courses or the vocational training at the German Hotel School El Gauna now!

Parents Corner

Parenting without Stress One of the joys of parenting is the pride we experience in watching our children grow and become responsible

How to raise kids with inner discipline without stress?

Traditional approaches use external motivators in attempts to change behavior. They aim to obtain obedience and compliance. This approach focuses on telling young people what to do, rewarding them if they do as expected, and threatening or punishing them if they don't. From the young person's point of view, rewards and punishment are often perceived as being unfair- a valid feeling.

An additional shortcoming of method becomes apparent as soon as a young people grows and out of direct supervision of parents: they will do what they want to do without any responsibility.

External tactics are various forms of manipulation, pressure or coercion. Parents who rely on punishment and rewards are limiting themselves as well as their children's development. Manipulation is not long lasting. Coercion, in particular, never prompts a youngster to want to do what the adults desires. A coercive approach is never joyful. It is something done TO another person, which is in contrast to collaboration- working WITH a person. Nothing that is imposed has a long life because the person doesn't have any ownership in it. If these external motivational approaches were effective, irresponsible behaviors would be a mere footnote to parenting, but not the source of stress. An additional

Rules or duties As with imposed consequences, the term ''rules" as a disciplinary tool is often counterproductive. Rules are used to control - not inspire. Parents should be are more inclined to view a youngster's misbehavior as an opportunity to promote responsibil ity in a positive manner. Therefore, instead of relying on rules, consider using the term "responsibilities". In contrast of rules, responsibilities empower and elevate. They are stated in positive terms, whereas rules are often stated in negative terms, there is a natural tendency to help rather than to punish.

We can control people, but we can't change them. People change themselves. Sometimes the youngster's emotion is prompted by something you have no idea about, but the emotion is directed at you . Just ask: "Are you angry at me or at the situation?" This reflective question prompts the young person to stop and evaluate, which so often leads to the chi ld's sharing their frustration with the parents, help to control their own impulses and stimulate a modeling of different kind of behavior to been able to take a right choice.

Asking reflective questions can manage impulses for promoting responsibility. The true responsibility - means that people behave correctly because they want to (have own desire for), but not being pushed by somebody. It's can be enough just to pose the questions and modeling different behavior's cases. If you ask in a calm way, the youngster will think about it - even if the child will not admit a mistake or share thoughts with you. But it is important to motivate him to be honest with himself and to think about the result or satisfaction from consequences of their choice before taking an action. If the child takes responsibility for the action with its consequence -we reach the goal! {Source: Marwinmarshal/.com)

~8ihmfifu~~oot~andl~~ Sakaran wl~ English name: Henbane I Species: Hyoscyamus muticus

The Bedouin are wary of this plant but will smoke it with tobacco if they need to relieve the symptoms of asthma.

... , •

Clever grazing animals eat it early in _, the season but avoid it later. :"\ Sakaran is a toxic plant belonging to the Solanaceae, a family in which has inoffensive food plants such as potatoes and tomatoes that cohabit with toxic weeds such as Mandrake and Deadly Nightshade. The toxins specifically target the autonomic nervous system. This has the servile role of regulating our essential bodily functions without troubling our more exalted conscious faculties. The specialized muscles of heart, eyes, blood vessels, bowels, bladder, uterus, and glands are all wired up for the spontaneous modulation of heart beat, breathing, salivation, eye pupil size, perspiration, urination, defecation and sexual arousal. Blushing is also a response of the system.

Fine control is achieved through the complementary action of two sets of nerves: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. The sympathetic triggers "Flight or Fight" responses to an adrenalin rush by stimulating heart rate and general alertness, while the parasympathetic, brings about a "Rest and Digest" response, slowing down the heart rate, promoting digestion, allowing bowel movements and reining in the action of the sympathetic system. The Solanaceae toxins specifically target the parasympathetic side. They inhibit the firing of the nerves by blocking the action of acetylcholine, the only chemical messenger used by the parasympathetic system to transmit nerve signal across synapses, a small gap between nerve connections. The Solanaceae toxins bind to specific receptors in the synapses, preventing them from responding to the acetylcholine signal and the parasympathetic nerves consequently shuts down, unable to bring the heart back to normal after an adrenalin rush. All bowel movements, loosening of sphincters, secretion by glands and focusing of the eye muscles are inhibited. The graphic effects of such inhibition can be seen after an overdose. The mouth, throat and nasal passage become so dry that any attempt at speaking results in animal like croaking and barks. Constipation follows with difficulty urinating, rapid beating of the heart, blurred vision, and increased sensitivity to light, excitement and restlessness. Hallucinations and delirium may be induced and death can follow. Cleopatra is said to have considered it as a way of committing suicide and tested it on some of her slaves, only to be put off by the gruesome spectacle. The wives of the Roman Emperors, Augustine and Claudius, were less squeamish and dispatched several of their rivals in this manner. In smaller doses, the toxins act as a general depressant on the Central Nervous System. This arises because acetylcholine is not only present in the autonomic system but is one of a cocktail of nerve transmitters active in the brain. By selectively blocking the action of acetylcholine, a shift in the balance of brain activity occurs. The effects are less specific than on the autonomic system but can result in euphoria followed by sleepiness and amnesia. The effect on memory has made the Solanaceae alkaloids the drugs of choice for cads intent on theft or seduction. Drinks are spiced to induce intoxication in the unwitting victims who then fail to recall the circumstance of their deception once they recover. The drugs have also been used since ancient time as a treatment for sleeplessness, and in combination with opium, found favor as a general anesthetic up to the 19th century when they were finally replaced by chloroform and ether. The extraction, purification and identification of the Solanaceae toxins have allowed modern medicine a more nuanced application of their properties. Scopolamine was first isolated from the Hyoscyamus species (Henbane) of which Sakaran is one example. When released slowly from a transdermal patch at the miniscule rate of 330 micrograms a day, it reduces the nausea associated with motion sickness or post-operative recovery. When diluted in eye drops, it causes dilation of the pupils and paralysis of the focusing muscles, facilitating optical surgery. Atropine was first isolated from Atropa belladonna, Deadly Nightshade. It is used as an antidote to nerve poisons like sarin, once used in an attack on the Tokyo underground by members of a demented religious sect. The poison specifically blocks the action of cholinesterase, an enzyme which normally breaks down acetylcholine to prevent it from accumulating and wreaking havoc on the body's normal processes. And that is exactly what happens when the enzyme is blocked by the poison. The parasympathetic nervous system is forced into overdrive, causing runny nose, drooling, difficulty breathing, constricted pupils, vomiting, diarrhea and involuntary urination. The victim even-tually dies of convulsive spasms. Atropine blocks the acetylcholine receptors in the heart, soft muscle and glands, thus reducing the physiological symptoms of over stimulation but has no effect on the skeletal muscles which have a different class of receptors for acetylcholine. Another drug, pralidoxime, is therefore needed to inhibit the fatal spasms. Hyoscyamine was first isolated from mandrake and henbane and has a similar effect to scopolamine.

Mardaqoush ~j!JJA Eng: Sage I Species: Salvia multicaulis Almost a thousand species are known, the largest

genera amongst the family of Labiatae (the Mints). Salvia is best known as the culinary herb, sage, which imparts a sausage like flavor to meats and is a good condiment to rich , oily foods as it aids digestion. It comes in several varieties, Dalmatian (Salvia officinalis), Spanish (Salvia officinalis lavandilufolia), and Greek (Salvia triloba), each varying in their bitter aromatic quality. South American sages have a sweet, fruity fragrance and come with red, pink, cream or blue blossoms, often cultivated as ornamentals. Some are pollinated by humming birds. Sacred sage from Mexico (Salvia divinorum) causes psychedelic tripping or shamanistic visions, the only hallucinogen in the mint family and still legal in most countries.

The Bedouin don't use Salvia multicaulis as a cooking herb, and it doesn't trip the mind, but infusions are highly valued for subduing a cough, reducing high blood pressure or relieving the pain of toothache. ( Sowu:e: frltp: f/wifdeJtn£M~-€fPJPLcomf~/6llvti£6-m.edicinaUwt&)

Bombay A bdel Mansour is back to manage his famous Bombay restaurant once again. After working in Zurich for 25 years in food and beverage, Mr. Abdel returned to Hurghada 1 0 years ago to bui ld the Bombay Restaurant according to his experience and uniqueness. The open-air restaurant provides tranquility for everyone to enjoy the perfect Red Sea weather. For the very hot days, a comfy air-conditioned setting is also available.

The varied international menu includes everything from appetizing Italian to tantalizing Indian. Pizzas are a favorite served with Bombay's special marinated pepperoni. New additions on the menu include Zurich Ragout and Roesti. For that special dinner, ask for the origina l Swiss cheese fondue. Here at Bombay's, the wines are stored and prepared, where appropriate, in special fridges to be served at the correct temperature. As well, to further quench one's thirst, fresh juices are made in front of your eyes. To make your time at Bombay all that it can be, shisha is available in a variety of flavors and, as well, free wireless internet access.

Pondering where to arrange your next party? Bombay is the right place for you!

A tuna is a saltwater fin fish that belongs to the family Thunnini , a sub-grouping of the mackerel family (Scombridae) - which together with the tunas, also includes the bonitos, mackerels, and Spanish mackerels. Thunnini comprises fifteen species across five genera, the sizes of which vary greatly, ranging from the bullet tuna (max. length: 50 em (1 .6 ft), weight: 1.8 kg (4 lb) up to the Atlantic blue fin tuna (max. length: 4.6 m (15 ft), weight: 684 kg (1 ,508 lb). The blue fin averages 2 m (6.6 ft), and is believed to live up to 40 years.

Their circulatory and respiratory systems are unique among fish, enabling them to maintain a body temperature higher than that of the surrounding water. An active and agile predator, the tuna has a sleek, streamlined body, and is among the fastest-swimming pelagic fish . Found in warm seas, it is extensively fished commercially, and is popular as a game fish. As a result of over-fishing, stocks of some tuna species such as the Southern Bluefin tuna have been reduced dangerously close to the point of extinction.

The tuna is a sleek and streamlined fish, adapted for speed: built like torpedoes, have retractable fins and their eyes are set flush to their body. It has two closely spaced dorsal fins on its back. Seven to 10 yellow fin lets run from the dorsal fins to the tail , which is lunate- curved like a crescent moon- and tapered to pointy tips. The caudal peduncle, to which the tail is attached, is quite thin, with three stabilizing horizontal keels on each side. The tuna's dorsal side is generally a metallic dark blue and the underside is silvery or whitish , for camouflage.

Thunnus are widely but sparsely distributed throughout the oceans of the world , generally in tropical and temperate waters at latitudes ranging between about 45° north and south of the equator. All tunas are able to maintain the temperature of certain parts of their body above the temperature of ambient seawater. For example, Bluefin can maintain a core body temperature of 25-33 oc (77-91 °F), in water as cold as 6 oc (43 °F). However, unlike "typical" endothermic creatures such as mammals and birds, tunas do not maintain temperature within a relatively narrow range. Tunas achieve endothermy by conserving the heat generated through normal metabolism. In all tunas, the heart operates at ambient temperature. This allows the tuna to elevate the temperatures of the highly-aerobic tissues of the skeletal muscles, eyes and brain, which supports faster swimming speeds and reduced energy expenditure, and which enables them to survive in cooler waters over a wider range of ocean environments than those of other fish .

Also unlike most fish , which have white flesh , the muscle tissue of tuna ranges from pink to dark red . The red myotomal muscles derive their color from myoglobin, an oxygen-binding molecule, which tuna express in quantities far higher than most other fish. The oxygen-rich blood further enables energy delivery to their muscles.

Dolphins swim beside several tuna species. Tuna schools are believed to associate themselves with dolphins for protection against sharks.

Commercial fishing vessels tend to exploit this association by searching for dolphin pods. Vessels would encircle the pod with nets to catch the tuna beneath ; however the nets were prone to entangling dolphins, injuring or killing them. Public outcry and new regulations have led

72 R_ed 5ea BulletiQ

to more "dolphin friendly" methods, now e 1e. ally involving lines :-a ""' tnar, nets. However, there are neither universal independent inspection programs nor verification of "dolphin safeness", so these protections are not absolute.

Bluefin tuna migrate across oceans and can dive more than 4,000 feet. They are tremendous predators from the moment they hatch, seeking out schools of fish like herring, mackerel and even eels. They hunt by sight and have the sharpest vision of any bony fish . There are three species of Bluefin : Atlantic (the largest and most endangered), Pacific, and Southern . Most catches of the Atlantic blue fin tuna are taken from the Mediterranean Sea, which is the most important Bluefin tuna fishery in the world. The Atlantic Bluefin is a highly sought-after delicacy for sushi and sashimi in Asia! Driven by high prices, fishermen use even more refined techniques to catch tuna. As a result , the fish are disappearing. Tuna are a top predator in the marine food chain, maintaining a balance in the ocean environment.

Yellowfin tuna are torpedo-shaped with dark metallic blue backs, yellow sides, and a silver belly, which has about 20 vertical lines. The second dorsal fin and the anal fin, as well as the fin lets between those fins and the tail , are bright yellow, giving this fish its common name. The second dorsal and anal fins can be very long in mature specimens, reaching almost as far back as the tail and giving the appearance of sickles or scimitars. The pectoral fins are also longer than the re lated Bluefin tuna. Yellowfin tuna can live up to six or seven years.

The yellowfin tuna is among the larger tuna species, reaching weights over 180 kg (400 lb ), but is significantly smaller than the Atlantic and Pacific Bluefin tunas, which can reach over 450 kg (990 lb), and slightly smaller than the Big eye tuna and the southern Bluefin tuna.

Yellowfin tuna are epi-pelagic fish that inhabit the mixed surface layer of the ocean above the thermocline. Sonic tracking has found that although Yellowfin tuna, mostly range in the top 100 m (330 ft) of the water column and penetrate the thermocline relatively infrequently. They are capable of diving to considerable depths.

Yellowfin tuna often travel in schools with similarly sized companions, like skipjack and Big eye, and are also known to associate with dolphins and with drifting flotsam such as logs and pallets, and sonic tagging indicates some follow moving vessels.

Yellowfin tuna prey includes other fish, pelagic crustaceans, and squid. Like all tunas, their body shape is particularly adapted for speed , enabling them to pursue and capture fast-moving baitfish such as flying fish, sauries, and mackerel. Schooling species such as myctophids or lanternfish and similar pelagic driftfish, anchovies, and sardines are frequently taken . Large yellowfins prey on smaller members of the tuna fami ly such as frigate mackerel and skipjack tuna. Yellowfins are able to escape most predators, because unlike most fish, tuna are warm-blooded, and their warm muscles make them extremely strong swimmers, yellowfin tuna reaching "speeds of up to 50 miles per hour". They are highly migratory, can navigate enormous distances, sometimes crossing entire oceans. They are found throughout the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Discovery of medieval Arab Gold Coins A cache of medieval Arab gold coins may already be the largest in the eastern Mediterranean, and there's probably more to come.

These gold coins are among thousands recently discovered by scuba divers on the seabed of the ancient harbor near the Israeli town of Caesarea.

An unprecedented discovery of more than 2,000 gold coins off the north-central coast of Israel might be part of the largest gold hoard ever found in the eastern Mediterranean, according to archaeologists.

The coins are identified as dinars, the official currency of the Fatimid caliphate that ruled much of the Mediterranean from A.D. 909 to 1171.

The find was made by accident in early February, when a team of six sport divers spotted what they initially thought were a few toy coins on the seabed near the ancient harbor of Caesarea. After realizing the significance of the find, they immediately notified the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). Divers from the IAA's Marine Archaeology Unit accompanied the group back to the site and were stunned at what they found. "We were told [that the divers] had found about 30 or 40 coins," says Jakob (Koby) Sharvit, director of the Marine Archaeology Unit. "Usually that means you've found a hoard. So we went back and performed a small excavation. After two hours, we had found something like one thousand coins. "We were shocked," he recalls. "We were so incredibly excited, but when you're underwater, you can't talk to each other. It was only when we surfaced and pulled out our regulators that we could scream with happiness."

But that was just the beginning: Another thousand coins were recovered from the site, which already makes the find at least five times as large as what has until now been considered the largest known gold coin hoard ever found in the country.

A Fistful of Dinars Though the discovery of gold always captures the imagination, it's the historical value of the cache that has researchers dazzled.

Fatimid dinars feature the names of the caliphs they were minted under, as well as the date and location where they were minted. "They're first-class histoncal documents," explains Robert Kool, curator of the IAA's Coin Department.

At its height in the mid-tenth to mid-eleventh centuries A.D., Fatimid rule stretched across North Africa and Sicily to the Levant, with trade ties that extended all the way to China. From its capital in Cairo, the caliphate controlled access to gold from sources in West Africa to the Mediterranean, and the currency crafted from the precious metal conveyed the Fatimids' formidable power and wealth.

Page 80: Red Sea Bulletin - Issue May/June 2015

A cursory study reveals that the earliest coin from the hoard was minted in Palermo, Sicily, while the majority came from official Fatimid mints in Egypt and other parts of North Africa and date to the reigns of Caliphs ai-Hakim (A.D. 996-1021) and his son ai-Zahir (A.D. 1021-1036). The coins are of two different denominations-whole dinars and quarter dinars-and are of various weights and sizes. Initial tests indicate that they are 24-karat gold with a purity of upwards of 95 percent. 'The amount of currency minted under the Fatimids is truly staggering," says Kool , who notes that as late as 1120 the caliphate's treasury was said to hold around 12 million dinars. "It was truly a monetary society. People got paid."

Thanks to detailed historical accounts and treasure troves of contemporary documents, we know how much people were paid at the time. The average monthly wage of an unskilled worker was around one dinar a month, according to Kool.

Some of the recovered coins appear to be in "minf' condition, but others had obviously been in circulation for some time. Several of the coins show tooth marks, where skeptical merchants employed a "bite test" to assess the authenticity of properly pure Fatimid gold.

Questions, Excavation, and Answers Now researchers must figure out why such a large amount of currency was found on the seafloor so far off the coast. Sharvit is confident that the hoard is from a shipwreck and suggests several scenarios, including that the coins belong to a merchant ship or may be associated with a tax payment on its way to Cairo.

Based on the lack of small denominations or even clippings of coins that would be used for average transactions, Kool agrees that the cache was serving an official purpose: "This was no day-to-day money." (Sou v-ee: Mttp:/ I V\fJVV\.rtatiortafgeogv-apMic.coVV\)

The puzzling case of a 56-year-old U.S. man who suddenly developed weakness, fatigue and body aches is leading doctors to warn that massive consumption of iced tea may be responsible for some unexplained cases of kidney failure. It's being called iced-tea nephropathy by the New England Journal of Medicine, which published a letter describing the case. The source of the problem was an excessive amount of oxalate, a compound found in many foods. Excessive amounts can also come from "juicing," having gastric bypass surgery, and by consuming foods with a lot of ascorbic acid such as beets, spinach, nuts and strawberries. But in this case, the man reported that he was drinking 16 nine-ounce glasses of iced tea each day, giving him more than 1 ,500 milligrams of oxalate per day. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises consuming no more than 40-50 mg of oxalate per day, the authors note. "If you drink tea once or twice a day, it probably wouldn't exceed what is the normal range for Americans. But this patient was taking 1 0 times that amount," said Dr. Umber Ghaffar of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, a coauthor of the letter. Consuming too much oxalate can lead to kidney stones, which can damage the kidney by blocking the flow of urine. But in this case there were oxalate crystals inside the kidney, and that generates an inflammatory reaction. If that's not resolved it will cause scarring and loss of the kidney tissue. So that's what probably was happening in this patient. He ultimately needed dialysis and remained on it because his kidney damage was so extensive. "Usually if theyre at the stage where they need dialrsis, it would be unusual for it to reverse," said Dr. Gary Curhan, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medica School who was not involved with the case. The irony is that previous research has suggested that "people who take tea in the usual amounts actually have a lower risk of kidney stones," Curhan said. "But in this case, the person was drinking huge amounts of oxalate," he said. "I would caution people against drinking that much, but drinking a glass or two would not concern me." Ghaffar and her colleagues speculated that such regular excessive consumption of oxalate "may be an under recognized cause of renal failure." "The summer season is coming and a lot of people use a lot of iced tea in this season," she said. 'We just want to make patients aware that too much of anything is bad." After numerous developments, the 825,000 square meters Safaga port will open soon. With an intensification of work and cominual follow-ups, the project cost is estimated at EGP 325million. Work on this project was divided into three main phases, characterized by geometric, technical and or.arational structures. The project spanned over the maritime passenger station, development of the old port borders and the land port sector. The redevelopmem project includes space for goods, a passenger terminal, an aluminum terminal, grain terminal, maritime pier, area for import and export, administrative areas, paths and gates, and the addition of a multi-purpose terminal. The annual capacity of the maritime terminal is 1 .3 million passengers, 30,000 cars, 40,000 trucks, while the total capacity for trading after development is 8.5m tons. The establishment of a terminal for water desalination with land space of 500 cubic meters in order to serve the port was implemented along with a terminal for solar energy to serve the project.

Popular adventurer Omar Samra (born in 1978, August, 11th) has become the first Egyptian, and one of only 40 people in history, to complete the Explorers Grand Slam by reaching the North and South Poles after climbing the highest mountain on every continent. Before travelling, Samra posted on his official Facebook about some of the dangers he will be facing during his trip. "I must admit I'm a little anxious," said the explorer. One of his worries is the weather; temperatures average around -30 degrees Celsius, equivalent to -22 Fahrenheit. Comparing the weather to his experience when he was trekking to the South Pole last year, Samra said he believes that the humidity and wind speed in the Arctic make the cold much harder to take. He also explained that the low position of the sun in the sky means that even inside the tent, temperatures will be consistently low. Samra is also worried about possible polar bear attacks. "The threat of attacks in the Arctic is very real," he said, explaining that the attacks could take place during the night. In addition, the adventurer is worried about crossing leads, places where the ice has melted, requiring either that the trekers don dry suits or ski around the leads, which may lose time. Other hazards include the constantly shifting ice, difficult terrain, and the challenges of navigating close to the magnetic north pole.

"I've successfully reached the North Pole at 5 am on April 21, thereby completing a 20-year long journey since the day I dreamed of climbing Mount Everest," Samra wrote on his Facebook page.

In 2007, Samra became the first Egyptian and youngest Arab to climb Mount Everest. He then successfully surmounted Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mount Elbrus in Russia, Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia, Vinson Massif in Antarctica, Aconcagua in Argentina and Mount McKinely in North America before finally traveling to the South Pole in Antarctica and the North Pole in the frozen Arctic Ocean.

In addition to his record-breaking exploits, Samra is a motivational speaker and entrepreneur. He founded Wild Guanabana in 2009, a travel company specializing in the design of creative and adventure travel experiences around the globe. He also plans to become the first Egyptian to fly to space next year after winning the AXE Apollo Space Academy competition, beating out 112 contestants from around the world. The Ministry of Tourism in awe of the feat of adventurer Egyptian Omar Samra raising the Egyptian flag at the North Pole will positively benefit tourism to Egypt stressing upon the positive mental image of the first Egyptian to complete the "Grand Slam." Egypt is so proud to have such a great man in its country. [email protected] ~ed )ea Bu l letiQ 79
