By the time the first audience sat down in theirseats at the Marion Huber Theater, miles andmiles of creative track had been laid down thatled to the door of In This House, the world-pre-miere chamber musical at the Two River The-ater that merited an extended run before it evenopened, due to demand from theater sub-
cribers and to accommodate single ticket sales. It is part of a growing excitement — and rapidly ex-panding audience — as the 2011-2012 season
continues to reveal the vitality and vision of the theater’s new artistic director, John Dias. His passion and sen-sitivity for the development of original plays and musicals have put him in the vanguard of new American the-ater, and, now, The Two River Theater along with him.
In This House is not only a masterwork of creative collaboration and commitment, but also, most importantly,a rare example of a new play — never mind a musical — that has actually come to fruition. It is an extraordinary and thrilling process that the Two River Theater is keen on sharing with everyone, reaching outinto the community to engage a larger and larger audience to come and share in the experience. As evidenced by the extended run of the production, more and more people are accepting the invitation.
John Dias first fell in love with the team of Sarah Schlesinger and Mike Reid when he saw a production oftheir musical, The Ballad of Little Jo, at the Steppenwolf Theater and knew he wanted to work with them. Yearslater, In This House gave him the chance.
Sarah Schlesinger chairs the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing department of the Tisch School of the Arts atNYU. Mike Reid is a Grammy Award winning Nashville songwriter whose hits include “I Can’t Make YouLove Me,” made famous by Bonnie Rait. They have been making musicals together for more than a decade.Sarah writes the lyrics. Mike writes the music. Together, they write the stories.
The idea for In This House came to Sarah when she was standing in the attic of a house her husband was ren-ovating in Baltimore. She heard a helicopter outside, but inside the room, time went backwards. She washolding scraps of the past, pieces of paper from the ordinary lives of the people who had lived in the house, grocery lists and clippings, stuffed behind the wallboards. It touched her to think of the people who had livedwithin these walls, the relationships, the struggles, what it took for people to stay together...and the story thatwas to become In This House was off and running.
At the core, the play explores the question of how do you hold relationships together, like long term marriage witnessed here. How do you keep it together when it is easy to lose track of the beginning and godown petty, finger-pointing roads. In This House brings two couples together in a unity of time and placewhere everything is happening in front of you They meet accidentally, a younger and older couple, one at thebeginning, one at the end of their time together.

A chamber musical is an intimate form that has none of the razzmatazz of itslarger relative. In This House is told in four characters with a small orchestra — apiano, cello, winds, and violin. The music is integral to the storyline, seamlesslywoven into the plot and characters and dialogue. The expressionistic set is stagedon a platform in the black box space of the Huber Theater, with the audienceseated close up to the performance, surrounding the stage. It sets up a more personal relationship to performance that allows you to see the characters as realpeople, and, in time, care about their stories.
John Dias first saw In This House in a workshop. It was the piece he had beenwaiting for and committed to making part of his first full season at the Two RiverTheater. Jonathan Bernstein joined the team as co-writer, bringing a sharp ear fordialogue and years of experience with him as the supervising director of eightBroadway shows. What followed was months of collaborative effort, working andrefining every inch of the piece, along, of course, with casting and staffing, cos-tumes and set design, and the myriad details that need tending to mount a pro-
duction. What is new to the process is the joy of bringing theaudience into experience as co-collaborators.
In March, the Two River Theater invited an audience to heara reading. The Huber Theater was packed. These works-in-progress are free and open to the public, meant to open aconversation between artists and audiences — a critical feed-back in the development stages of a piece that give the peoplewho wrote the piece the chance to feel it. “It give us the chanceto understand what it is that doesn’t work,” explains Sarah.“To see the whole thing in context, the whole building, notroom by room.”
In July, Sarah, Mike and Jonathan did an artist-in-residenceintensive. “This play, because it is a chamber piece, is very
easy to run it off the road and run it into the ditch,” says Mike. “You’re never finished with it.”More revisions. More rewrites. More editing. “The Wall” — a song inspired by the process ofrebuilding stone walls as a metaphor for rebuilding after a divorce — made the cut.
“The name of the game is to do more with less,” Jonathan Bernstein explains. “To pair down,as relentlessly as possible, until you’re left with heart of the artichoke. This is a play based on a chance encounter that’s filled with secrets, stories, fears, joys, and the need to understand each other. By night’s end, if we’ve done our job right, it will have the ripple effectof being profound encounter between story and audience.”
Nothing would make John Dias happier than if you judge that for yourself.

F alling in love with Red Bank has taken on a whole new meaning since WeddingWalk came to town — the big special-event day when wedding-related businesses roll out their red carpets for soon-to-be weds and their bridal
parties, relatives, guests, and wedding planners. Now in its fourth year, 2012 Red Bank Wedding Walk, March 24, is the biggest ever with dozens of vendors, grand drawings and prizes, and a day filled with fun festivities and serious shopping. Just some of the prizes include a 6-day 5-night stay at a vacation/guest home at a resort in Costa Rica, an overnight stay at the Molly Pitcher Inn, including a four-course dinner for two in the dining room and chilled champagnewaiting for you on arrival, and a $1,000 gift certificate toward the purchase of wedding bands at a prominent Red Bank jewelry store.
“We created Wedding Walk in order to shine a spotlight on wedding related businesses,” say Nancy Adams, executive director of Red Bank RiverCenter, the SpecialImprovement District Management not-for-profit organization responsible for the event, along with the Red Bank Visitors Center and the event’s sponsors. “Our PromotionsCommittee realized anyone getting married could plan — and have — a fabulouswedding in Red Bank. We have everything right here, every step of the way.”
This year there are forty-eight participants in more than a dozen categories: Bakery,Fashions & Accessories, Florists, Hotel & Reception Sites, Invitations, Jewelers, PartyPlanning/Entertainment, Photography, Framing/Portraiture, Showers/Rehearsals/Catering, Salons & Spas, Favors, and Transportation. Hundreds of attendees comefrom as far away as northern New Jersey and the New York border all the waydown to the Philadelphia area, with many coming from the greater Red Bank area.
According to Adams, businesses have relocated to Red Bank to be part of the action.“Red Bank is well received in the wedding industry,“ she reports. “The townhas a wonderful reputation throughout New Jersey, and beyond, for all it has tooffer. It is a prestigious address for any business.”
In business since 1942, Mustillo’s at 11 Broad Street has been a destination for weddinggowns, bridal attire and accessories for generations. Marching downthe aisle has a long tradition in Red Bank with Wedding Walk settingthe pace for bridal shopping year round.

Six years ago, Riverview Medical Center set forth on abreast health mission, directed at encouraging women, aged 40 and over, to have their annual mammogram,
as well as to raise money to provide mammography to theuninsured and underserved in thecommunity. In conjunction with theWomen’s Center at Riverview, the mission behind the Paint the TownPink campaign was to educate localwomen about a very significant fact:that early detection is a woman’s bestdefense against breast cancer.
Every year since 2006, dozens ofvolunteers have gotten togetherright after the New Year tobegin to set the framework forthe May event ahead. Thevolunteers of the Pink Com-mittee are the backbone ofPaint the Town Pink and makethis week-long event a reality.Behind every volunteer, thereis a story. One of those storiesbelongs to Sally Harris.
2012 marks the sixth year Sally has been volunteering hertime to the Pink Committee, but, more importantly, it marksthe sixth year that she is cancer free. “Early detection is thereason I am able to participate in this event,” says Harris.“The lows and fears I felt when breast cancer was found inmy body evolved into the opportunity for positive action
through being part of the Business Committee of Paint theTown Pink. It is energizing and, equally, rewarding to bepart of this creative and productive group. Early detectionis our answer to conquering breast cancer.”
Many businesses throughout Monmouth Countyturn their towns into a vision of pink in May. Theyare enthusiastic about breast cancer education and gathering donations to helpwomen who do not have insurance, or areunder-insured. Joining Red Bank, Fair Haven, and Monmouth Beach, Riverview welcomes
Atlantic Highlands, Little Silver, Rumson, and Shrewsbury to the
Pink brigade this year —making the 2012 event the
most represented in thecampaign’s history.
With the expansion ofPaint the Town Pink,2012 will cast a
brighter hue across moreof Monmouth County than
ever. What began as an ideasix years ago has been
transformed into a grassroots initiativethat has blossomed into a force that is changing lives in verytangible and meaningful ways.

I believe in the power of early detection. I lost my husband to colon cancer at a young age. So, while my health has always been important, it is even more important now. I am my children’s only parent and their biggest cheerleader. They also know that Mom is a strong advocate for preventative medicine.
That is why I make it a priority to visit the Women’s Center at Riverview. The Center rivals any in New York or New Jersey. I feel incredibly lucky to have Dr. Won right here in our community. I continue to put my health in her hands because I believe she is the best.
I am a parent. I am an advocate. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram.
To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305. Or visit www.RiverviewMedicalCenter.com/WomensCenter

WEDDING DAYAbove: Christelle & Tony Aponte;Left & below: Father of the Bride, Michel Berger, with daughter Christelle.
For Christelle Berger, August21, 2010, the day she married Tony Aponte was
“the happiest in my life.” It wasalso one of many special occasions that Maureen Bay andher Fair Haven jewelry store, Gem of an Idea, have been in thepicture in the Berger family album.Christelle’s parents, Anne Marie andMichel, are long-time residents ofFair Haven whose love of community encompasses a commitment to shopping in the businesses in town, not just for conveniences and the occasional purchase, but as apriority — a choice of connection to place that is, for them, what makes ahometown more than an address. Their long-time relationship to Gem ofan Idea is a perfect example.
When Tony formally asked Michel and Anne Marie for their daughter’s hand, the three entered into an en-gagement ring pact, unbeknownst to Christelle. Along with her permission, Anne Marie offered a family heirloom to Tonyfor the engagement ring — her mother’s diamond and emerald wedding ring. Although he had already put a deposit ona yellow diamond, Tony accepted the offer of the ring knowing his future-wife would love this family connection, and thesurprise. Next stop: Gem of an Idea for the resetting of the stones.
Since Christelle was a little girl, her father had gone to Gem of an Idea every year for her Christmas present. “It’s alwaysbeautifully wrapped, a gold box wrapped within white paper, and I save it for the last,“ she explains. “I love jewelry andknow I’ll love whatever’s inside.” So when Tony brought the ring to Maureen at Gem of an Idea, she already knew how tohelp him design the ring Christelle would love — and she was right.
Gem of an Idea opened in 1983, the year Christelle was born. A full service jewelry store, its selection of unique and special gem creations has made a lifetime of happy memories.
“I have so many stories in which Gem of an Idea is intertwined,” says Christelle. “Fainting after getting my ears piercedthere...the annual Christmas presents from my daddy...all of the wedding jewelry — rings, necklace, earrings — fromthere. Maureen and the team have been part of my memories growing up.”
Christelle and Tony are expecting their first child in a few months. The relationship to Gem of an Idea is a family tradition they plan to continue into the next generation

T he Little Silver Business & Professional Association (LSBPA) is in full swing in itsfourth year. It is an organization of retail and service providers that either livein Little Silver or have put down their business roots there. It is a group that be-
lieves in making good neighbors, supporting community, the importance of local eco-nomics, and the goodness of giving back.
Formed in 2008 as the bright idea of Lori Saybolt, manager of The Woman’s Exchange in town, the organization wasplanted with a handful of enthusiastic supporters and quickly bloomed into a membership that is now 65 businesses — andgrowing. There are meetings, special events, lunches, Facebook connections, networking opportunities...but, more impor-tantly, it is a community within a community that provides a place for people to get to know each other, look out for oneanother, and come together in a common cause.
Erica Melone, owner of Skin & Bones Day Spa and LSBPA co-vice president, has been a part of the Little Silver business community since1988. “I have seen, first hand, what a difference this organization hasmade,“ she explains. “Never before had I known the other business owners on such an intimate level or had such a good understanding ofLittle Silver as a community. We all work together to come up with waysto help our friends and neighbors and showcase all of the good of LittleSilver. You can see some of our fun events and charitable donations byvisiting our website, and we would really love for you to ‘like’ us on Facebook. We’re grateful when folks shop locally and, as business owners, we really appreciate your support.“
The LSBPA works closely with the Mayor and council, the localPTA, the fire department, the town workers, and the communityat large to bring events to town for everyone to enjoy, along withall the shops and restaurants and businesses in Little Silver. Thereis the annual book fair in October, and holiday horse-drawn-carriage rides in December. Look for the annual Side Walk Salecoming up May 17 to 19, and Dog Adoption Day, and the
Blood Donation Drive and Bone Marrow Swab event, and the “Have a Heart Food Drive”to benefit Lunch Break... It all adds up to making a positive contribution to a better qualityof life in community and bringing people into town to experience it.

Nicholas and Melissa Harary’s story is an American-dream come true. A young couple gets married. He’sthe master chef. She’s his muse. Together, they builda restaurant like no other, tending meticulously toevery detail, setting the highest standards for
everything, from the renovation of a building to the caliber of the cuisine. Charged with a crazy certainty thatoften characterizes the most creative entrepreneurs, they bet the ranch on the finish. Ten years later, they are definitely riding the winning horse. Thestory is shared in Nicholas Harary’s coffee-tablesize cookbook, Nicholas, The Cookbook, alongwith many of the signature recipes that have builtthe four-star reputation of his restaurant that openedin 2000. This year, Restaurant Nicholas has, once again, jumped to the top of the “Ten BestRestaurants in New Jersey” list, taking first placein the 2011/12 Zagat survey — just one in asteady stream of accolades that keep pouring in.
“What makes for our success,” says Nicholas, “is having a love of good foodin common with the people who come to our restaurant, and we have a passion for what we do.” It’s that “live to eat” philosophy, and the pure inspiration of making “good food,” that keeps Nicholas and his restaurant onthe creative edge of cooking — and customers coming back for more.
Eating in the main dining room at Restaurant Nicholas is an experience worthy of the residents of Downton Abbey. Dishes are served with impeccablepresentation, each given the attention deserving of a culinary work of art. ButterPoached Nova Scotia Lobster, "Macaroni & Cheese," Bacon Tuille, Smoked Paprika Oil...Day Boat Sea Scallop, Ruby RedGrapefruit, Parsley Creme Fraiche, Herbal Fumet...Bourbon Braised Suckling Pig, Parisienne Apples, Black Trumpet Mushrooms, Bergamot...The three-course prix fixe menu — with recommended wine pairings — is designed for a luxuriousevening out, with time allowed to enjoy it and diner reservations required.
Located just off the restaurant, a few steps away, Bar N is the casual counterpoint to the elegant formal dining room, with no reservations needed to drop in for a drink or order from the a la carte Bar Lounge Menu. Bar N also features a rotating three-course $29 tasting menu that changes daily, as well as a “Pre and Post Theater 3 Course Menu” for $29 togo with a performance at The Two River Theater or the Count Basie Theatre, a movie in town or a night out at any of thearea’s cultural venues, any day of the week. You can come for an appetizer and drinks, go see a show, and come back fordinner and dessert.
Bar N opens at 4:15pm every day — earlier than the dining room at 5:30pm — and stays open late (11:30pm Sunday toThursday; 1am Friday and Saturday). “There’s a ‘witching hour’ for young couples,” say Nicholas. “It’s when the babysitter is still on and they can come here to be together and just relax.”
Relaxing is a piece of cake — literally, if Lemon Pudding Cake with Yogurt Sorbet and Huckleberry Sauce is your choicedessert. All the selections on The Bar Lounge Menu are full portion equivalents of the formal dining room dishes, with some specials served only at Bar N. The “Lobster Sunday” three-course $29 menu is a favorite. So are monthly specials like bouillabaisse, the mixed seafood stew inspired by the time Nicholas and Melissa spent in the south of France. Bar N hosts wine seminars where four wines are paired with tastes from the kitchen and the winemakers are onhand to discuss the wines and answer questions. Reservations are required for these popular events
In addition to a fully stocked bar, Bar N cocktails are another featured special, made only with the freshest ingredients. NoRose’s Lime Juice here. There is only fresh squeezed lime in the Bar N Cosmopolitan. Or try a Pineapple Mojito or a Rhubarb Martini. “Everything served here is made by us from ingredients as close to nature as you can get,” explains Nicholas. “The unique blending of fresh, natural flavors makes all the difference in the taste — in our food and in our cocktails. At first, people can’t believe the difference, and then they don’t want it any other way.”

RETROGRADETIMES TWOBetween now and mid-April, two of the usually fastest-moving planets, Mars and Mercury, will be spending time with their celestial gearshifts in the “R-for-Retrograde” position.
Planets actually always move in a forward direction, but becausetheir orbits are not perfectly circular, all but the Sun and Moon some-times appear to be moving backwards. When this happens, they are said to be retrograde. When planets are retrograde, their energies are not expressed as clearly as when they are moving forward. It’s likehow you can drive much more comfortably and easily when you’re heading down the interstate than whenyou’re backing out of the driveway. When planets are REtrograde, the rule of thumb is to slow down and do“RE” kinds of things (review, relax, retrospect, reorganize, reconsider, etc.) when it comes to the activities and energies represented by that planet.
It might not be a bad idea to turn off the ringtone on all phones and schedule a relaxing getaway, even if it’sonly to your own favorite, coziest part of your home, when the two back-stepping planets join hands betweenMarch 12 and April 4. At the least, try to get your income tax done before the twelfth.

MARS RETROGRADEJanuary 23 - April 13, 2012
Mars represents our physical energy, our personal will and initiative, and our ability to assertourselves in pursuit of our goals. When Mars moves forward in its orbit, we move forward inour lives. Every couple of years or so, it slows down and goes retrograde for a period of abouttwo-and-a-half months. These are times when the Universe asks us to slow down our own paceas well. You might find that you’re feet feel like they’re wearing cement-lined sneakers whenyou try to push forward with a new project, or make progress on your New Year’s resolutions. It’s not unusual to feel physically tired during this period. It’s time to RElax more. Spend timeREviewing your priorities and commitments. REconsider whether you’ve bitten off more thanyou can chew. Although it’s not the time to initiate major undertakings if you can help it, youcan certainly keep the ball rolling on anything you’ve started, though you might want to thinkabout slowing your pace and energetic commitment, even if it means extending the time line.Mars also relates to anger and aggression, and if you’ve been burying frustration and irritationfor any reason, now’s the time to RE-examine the origins and see what you can do to bringeverything out in the open where it can dissipate.
Once the fiery planet goes direct on April 13th, you can be REjuvenated and ready to moveforward, full steam ahead!
MERCURY RETROGRADEMarch 12 - April 4, 2012
Mercury, the planet representing how we learn, think, and communicate, goes retrograde threetimes a year for about three weeks. When speedy, agile Mercury slows down and moves backward life can become confusing, and misunderstandings of all kinds can be a dime-a-dozen, because everyone on the planet is affected. Because no one is thinking as clearly asthey are when Mercury is moving forward, it’s not a good time to make big decisions if youdon’t have to...or to sign contracts, negotiate big deals, start new initiatives etc. However, it isa great period for “chilling,” and sorting things out internally through REflection, REview, andREtrospection.
