Although Hong Kong was itself struck by SARS this year, it did not

preclude us from caring for our compatriots on the mainland.

With a HK$2 million donation from the Hongkong Bank Foundation, the

HK Red Cross was able to purchase 21,000 sets of protective gear while a

further donation from the Everbright Concern Action Group helped to

acquire 40,000 masks. This was sent to seven severely affected provinces.

"The Business Community Relief Fund for the Victims of SARS" donated

HK$15 million. RMB2,000 was allocated to each SARS survivor and

RMB10,000 to the family of each fatality. To ensure that the money

reached the targeted recipent, Red Cross representatives sometimes

traveled long distances in person to hand over the donation.

Work has also been

done by the Red

Cross in educating

people both in the

urban and rural areas

so that if SARS

should re-surface, its

spread would be

better contained.

The International Red Cross has been active in Iraq since 1980. With the Iraqi Red Crescent Society has supplied water and medical assistance to the Iraqi people living under international sanction.

During the recent war, the International Red Cross remained in Iraq and worked with volunteers of the Iraqi Red Crescent to provide humanitarian assistance, and reminded all parties involved in the war of their responsibilities under the International Humanitarian Law.

After the war, the International Red Cross provided tracing and communication services to separated families, conducted awareness program on unexploded bombs, and is planning rehabilitation programs for the Iraqi people which can make use of our donation of HK$150, 000.

The need to disseminate information on International Humanitarian Law was made especially poignant during the recent Iraqi conflict when a staff member of the International Red Cross was tragically killed while on duty.
