* Red and White * Girls’ Christan Fellowship Footloose Dance By Abby Fisher It’s January again, which means the end of Christmas break, the start of a new semester, and, of course, the annual Girl’s Christian Fellowship dance. The theme of this year’s dance was Western, and not even the three inches of snow that fell that night stopped kids from showing up in their plaid flannels and cowboy boots. But this was no old-fashioned square dance. D.J. Nune from Loco Sounds provided the entertainment for the night, which ensured that it was well worth it for everyone who decided to weather out the snow storm at the GCF Dance. In addition to the western theme, the dance was also a bit of a ‘Coming Home’, or the opposite of a Homecoming. Instead of crowning a court of all girls, the members of the GCF elected five boys into the spots of honor for the night. Joshua Kauffman was chosen as the freshman attendant; Axel Bueter represented the sophomores; Russell McClarren was the junior class attendant; Austin Tuckerman was elected as the senior attendant; and Joey Spieles was crowned as King. Congratulations, boys, for being chosen to represent your classes at the GCF Footloose Dance!

Girls’ Christan Fellowship Footloose DanceBy Abby Fisher

It’s January again, which means the end of Christmas break, the start of a new semester, and, of

course, the annual Girl’s Christian Fellowship dance. The theme of this year’s dance was Western, and not even the three inches of snow that fell that night

stopped kids from showing up in their plaid flannels and cowboy boots.

Art ClubBy: Alex Drummer

WHS’s Art Club is in full swing. The club consists of 34 members this year, which is about the same as last. Mrs. Harman, art teacher and Art Club director, says her club mainly consists of Art III and Art IV students, but she also has a few freshmen and sophomores participating. If you’re not very familiar with the club, you’re in luck! The Red & White has the scoop on what the school’s finest artists are up to. The club is about to start back up working on the mural in the hallway. They also will be busy with art school presentations, as well as hopefully taking a field trip to the Toledo Museum of Art. The Art Club will once again be putting on the Spring Rave Dance. The dance seems to have been a hit these last couple years. Mrs. Harman left the theme of the dance up to the students. Jon Nelson is the one who suggested the winning theme, “Rave.” The club went along with the suggestions of using black lights and techno music, and it turned out to be a real hit! May 10, 2012 will be the date of this year’s Spring Arts Festival - the Art Club’s biggest project. The club is responsible for helping with the planning, set-up, and take-down. Mrs. Harman would like to note that this year’s festival will take place on a Thursday night this year, instead of a Friday. She explains, “We decided to try this out to help avoid the conflicting activities that were taking place at the same time.” The Art Club is a great club here at WHS, but like anything, there is always room for improvement. Mrs. Harman would like to see more student input, excitement, and commitment. She states, “Students are so busy these days that I find it difficult to find members who are willing to take charge in beginning certain tasks.” The Red & White would like to wish the Art Club a fun, successful year!

Science ClubBy:Dugan Shadbolt

This year’s Science Club is up and kicking with lots of students participating. At Wauseon High School, the Science Club exists to create a greater interest in science. They have discussions about science topics, and they do some fund raising for science organizations. The Red & White asked Mrs. Miller some questions about this year’s science club, and this is what we discovered. In her first year as club advisor, Mrs. Miller is excited to have this many students participating in the club. The clubs officers include President Dustin Snow, Vice President Kristen Benschoter, Treasurer Carly Clausen, and Secretary Bailey Creager. This group of seniors has done a great job of leading the Science Club this year. Other senior members of the group are Mary Kate D’Esposito, Slayde Humbert, Noah Hester, Troy Lind, Alyssa Stidham, Adrienne Hallett, Lindsey LaBarge, Morgan Borders, Joey Spieles, and Kaitlin Norris. Science Club is a blast and looks good on any college application, so next year come check it out. This great club welcomes all students! The Red and White staff would like to wish the Science Club good luck in all future endeavors !

College Basketball: Players to WatchBy: Colin Dietrich

When watching a NCAA college basketball game, you want a player to “wow” you. They may not be the best player, but they are fun to watch and provide endless entertainment. There are many great players in college basketball today, but I have selected the top five players that are a must watch.

Austin Rivers- DukeThe 6’4” freshman sensation is off to a solid freshman campaign. He is averaging 15.4 points per game and grabbing about 3 rebounds per game while adding 2.3 assists. His numbers are not off the charts, but the manner in which he goes about it makes him fun to watch. He can beat his opponents off the dribble with a flashy move and then step back and hit a clutch three, which makes him hard to guard. Rivers also has a swag on the floor. He thinks he is the best player out there which helps to raise his game to a whole new level. Rivers is believed to be, by many, one of the most NBA ready guards in the NCAA. His style of play fits the NBA and as a matter of fact, his father, Doc Rivers, is a coach for the Boston Celtics. Rivers is definitely a player to watch throughout the 2011-2012 season.

Aaron Craft- Ohio StateThe 6’2” point guard from Liberty Benton High School is definitely a player to watch. The sophomore only averages 8.2 points per game, which is not among the greats of college basketball. However, he adds a whole new dimension to this Ohio State ball club. He has the ability to knock down a big three, as well as get to the bucket. He also brings energy, effort, and hard work. He is an astounding leader and is very efficient on the floor. Craft averages 5.5 assists per contest and in the process shows his great defense with almost 3 steals per game. Defense wins championships and Craft can definitely play defense. Many believe Craft is the best on ball defender in the NCAA. He may not be the best all-around player, but his defense, hard work, and ability to do the little things will make Craft a fun player to watch throughout the year.

Harrison Barnes- North CarolinaMany experts believed that Harrison Barnes was ready for the NBA at the end of his freshman campaign. However, the 6’8” guard decided to return to the Tar Heels for his sophomore season and a shot at the national title. Barnes averages 17.1 points per game, while pulling down almost 5 rebounds per contest. His sophomore season is off to a solid start as the Tar Heels are off to a respectable 16-3 start. Barnes is also among the pre-season All-American list, which consists of the top 5 players in college basketball. He is currently predicted as the number three pick in the 2012 NBA draft. Anytime you get a college player that is ready for the NBA it makes for some exciting basketball.

Trey Burke- MichiganThe 5’11’ freshman from Columbus was Mr. Basketball in the state of Ohio as a senior. However, Trey Burke is not wearing the scarlet and gray this season, he is wearing the maize and blue. When Burke commited to Michigan, it looked has if he may not play much with point guards Darius Morris and Stu Douglass still on the Wolverine roster. However, with Morris leaving for the NBA, Burke has got his opportunity. He took advantage of that opportunity and never looked back. Burke is averaging 14.3 points per game, while dishing out 5.2 assists and also adding 4 rebounds from the point guard position. The starting point guard has excelled in the pick-and-roll offense, so with his ability to pass and score, it makes him exciting to watch. Burke also has the ability to take over the game. In a 61-56 win over Minnesota, Burke had 27 points while shooting a remarkable 77% from the field. Keep an eye on this outstanding freshman as the season progresses.

Jeremy Lamb- ConnecticutThe UCONN Huskies won the national title a season ago, but with Kemba Walker moving on to the NBA, it is time for other players to step up. One of those players is 6’5” sophomore guard, Jeremy Lamb. Lamb is off to a solid sophomore season, as the Huskies are off to a 14-4 start, and he is pouring in 18.9 points per game. He is also doing it effieciently as he is shooting over 52% from two and 42% from behind the arc. He is also pulling down 4.2 rebounds per game. Lamb is also capable of shooting it anywhere and anytime. He can shoot the spot up, shoot off the dribble, as well as shoot coming off of screens. That aspect makes him an exciting shooter to watch. Lamb is also another NBA ready guard, as he is projected to go number 12 in the 2012 NBA draft. If you get the chance to watch Lamb, you will not be disappointed.

Don’t Censor The WebBy: Alex Drummer

A heated topic in the news lately has been the debate over the bills SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act). The two bills are quite similar and propose much censorship to the World Wide Web. SOPA is the House bill, and PIPA is its sister bill in the Senate. The intent of the bills is to further protect against copyright infringements and intellectual property theft. However, many Internet companies are extremely opposed to the legislation. The list includes sites that are very popular among teens, as well as people of all ages, such as: Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Wikipedia. Some of you may have came in contact with protest efforts against the bills. On January 18th, there was a digital strike that is becoming known as the “Internet blackout.” Google’s iconic logo was covered with a black censor bar. Wikipedia’s site was fully blackout for 24 hours to raise awareness. It took you to a black page with a messaged titled “Imagine A World Without Free Knowledge.” Not all sites opposed to the bills participated in the protest but many did, and their efforts definitely did not go unnoticed. On January 18th, Twitter reported over 2.4 million SOPA-related tweets. The aftermath of the blackout doesn’t just stop there. CBS News reports, “According to the White House, a combined 103,785 signed a petition to kill the bill. About 24 U.S. Senators have now come out against the bills, including former co-sponsors Ben Cardin, Marco Rubio and Roy Blunt.” A procedural vote was to take place on PIPA January 24th, and work will continue on SOPA in February. It will be an interesting journey to the final verdict of this controversial legislation.

I’ll Do That Essay, LaterJacob Bray

“It’s obvious that Norfolk is infected with the sickness.” Disturbed’s David Draiman lets people know that something is happening. In Disturbed’s case, they are introducing their hit song, “Down With The Sickness.” But here in the halls of WHS, another sickness is taking Seniors out of commission. Senioritis is described as the decreased motivation of studies displayed by someone in his/her last year of high school, college, or graduate school careers. The symptoms of this disease include: procrastination, lack of motivation, a drop of academic performance, a desire to drop out of school, and, first and foremost, coasting. Coasting involves not paying attention in class, not applying what you learn in class, and frequent tardiness. If you notice yourself having some of these symptoms, try to maintain a challenging course load, enjoy Senior year, commit to an internship or a career-focused job, and keep a calender of important dates and times. Senioritis doesn’t have to keep you down. But some Seniors might be saying, “But I already got accepted to college. Why does it matter if my grades drop?” Well, my friend, I was in the same boat as you. But according to a 2007 New York Times article, The University of Colorado Boulder rescinded admissions to 45 students in 2006. The University of Michigan didn’t jump to conclusions quite as early. They sent out three different letters to its incoming freshmen with poor final grades: 62 issuing gentle warnings, 180 requesting an explanation, and 9 revoking admission. In the summer of 2006, The University of Washington revoked admissions to 23 different students because of poor grades. So, keep your head in the books or your academic career could be cut short. Senioritis is no laughing matter. Along with many others, I am infected. Together we must combat this deadly disease and prevail as a group of seniors, and a few juniors. Together we need to look Senioritis in the eye and say, “Challenge Accepted.”

Vampire Crushby A. M. Robinson

“I swear, my life was always totally normal.” Sophie McGee is like every other awkward teen, or so she thought. She ran a normal life. She had a father and an overly cautious step mother, and with that step mother she was given a snooty ‘every body loves me’ step sister. Sophie is part of her high school journalism class and as a junior, she hopes to become editor. As a project, she has to interview the new students of the high school. So, when you think of new students, you think: new people, maybe a new friend, freak or geek, maybe they will become popular, or just maybe... human? As Sophie investigates her new students, she runs into an old neighbor, James. “James who stole my sandwiches in fourth grade and teased me mercilessly through middle school. James, who now seems to have the power to make my heart race any time he comes

near.” Sophie comes to realize that James isn’t as normal as he used to be. Also, neither are the new students... A. M. Robinson is a creative writer who involves the paranormal and a romance all into one book. For all of those that like vampires and those that like romance, Vampire Crush is for you. (You can find it in the library!)

Kobe vs. Lebron

Bray vs. Shadbolt

Dugan:Well, Jacob Bray I hope you had a great Christmas and New Years. I know I did. The only thing bad about Christmas break is coming back to school after its over.Jacob: That is very true, Dugan. But with the basketball season starting up this is a must cover topic. Kobe is simply better than LeBron.Dugan: WOW, just jump right it in. That is the worst argument I think I’ve ever heard. There are no facts to back that up , and it is just an opinion.Jacob: Just because I don’t play basketball doesn’t mean I don’t know facts about basketball.. How can you compete with five NBA Championships, two of which Kobe was Finals MVP?Dugan:Hey now, as far as your classic “Kobe has more rings” argument, you can compete with that by saying that Lebron had no help in Cleveland and as soon as he got on a good team he made the NBA finals. This is the start of a dynasty in Miami.Jacob: Kobe is a better all around player than LeBron. He’s a 13 time All-Star for Jim’s sake! Also, he’s a two time NBA scoring champion! LeBron can hardly compete!Dugan: Kobe was drafted 13th over all in 1996,and he wasn’t even considered a top 10 player in his class. LeBron was drafted , as we all know, first overall. He was a three time Mr. Basketball in Ohio and won the Rookie of the Year Award. He has been above Kobe since high school.Jacob: True, Kobe was chosen 13th. He was originally drafted by the Hornets, but they didn’t want him. They traded the pick to the Lakers. The LA Lakers wanted this then 17 year old kid playing for them. That is saying something.Dugan: Lebron was drafted right out of high school as well. This says nothing about Kobe being better.Jacob: Kobe was the NBA Slam-Dunk Champion at age 18. He can also speak Italian and Spanish which trains him to play with any new foreign players the Lakers could pick up.Dugan: It doesn’t matter who’s on his team. He’s going to shoot, not pass.

He doesn't even to need to know their names.Jacob: Well, when people on the Lakers change their names to things like Metta World Peace, what exactly is the point of learning the names?Dugan: The Lakers have not played well this year, and while Kobe had a 40 point game, they still lost. Lebron’s Heat are looking at another NBA finals.Jacob: Granted the Lakers are sub-par this season so far. But first off, if you didn’t watch any sports over last summer, it isn’t LeBron’s Heat, it’s Dwayne Wade’s Heat. If Kobe had players like D Wade and Chris Bosh, he would be in the championship every year as well. He made it without many other high caliber players on the team a few years ago.Dugan: While Kobe has won the championships so far, he is at the tail end of his career and no more are coming on an actual team with other good players. Lebron is showing that he can score and play at all other types of the game. Many championships are coming and soon the Kobe vs Lebron will end as well. Lebron has more points, assets, rebounds, wins, and championships.Jacob: This is Lebron’s ninth season in the league. Kobe has played 17 years. Of course, he’s starting to wear out. If Lebron is putting up Kobe like numbers in 9 years, then we’ll talk. Besides Kobe was the youngest player to win a defensive award. He didn’t have to get traded to a good team to improve his skills.Dugan: Kobe has always been on at least an okay team. Lebron’s skills have always been there, but he hasn’t had the team to win. Now he does. Simple as that. Lebron is on the rise and Kobe is on his way out. This is the end of his dominance in the NBA. It’s all about Lebron, D Wade, and the Heat.Jacob: If Lebron had defensive skills in Cleveland, they would’ve beaten the Spurs in the championship. He also would have to not quit in the fourth quarter.

That would help him win many more Championships. Kobe had a career high 81 point game against the Raptors in 2006 with 28 points in the fourth quarter alone. That’s more than Lebron’s points per game number.Dugan: That’s more than everyone’s points per game number, and it was against the Raptors, so it doesn’t count for anything at all. Its like beating Colts with out Peyton Manning, its easy. Besides, that was 5 years ago which was Kobe’s 12th season. Give Lebron some time and he”ll top that no problem. The defensive “flaw” in Lebron’s game in Cleveland wasn’t him at all. His teammates weren't good enough to cover up for him. If he was on help side and he had to guard everyone who beat people of the dribble with no big man on his team. He was completely a one man army.Jacob: He had many defensive players in Cleveland. Pretty much everyone in Cleveland was good defensively except Lebron. He carried the team offensively, much as Kobe did with the Lakers in 2005 and 2006 after Shaq left. Kobe can carry a team like a boss.Dugan: Shaq was huge defensively in LA. Lebron has never played with a true big man. That completely changes how you play D. With a big man ,you can play aggressive, get in passing lanes ,shut your guy out, be super aggressive on the dribble, and all without being afraid of giving up easy drives or back cuts.Jacob: Shaq played with Lebron. He also had Z in Cleveland and in Miami.Dugan: Shaq was nothing in Cleveland , and we all know that he was long gone by the time he showed up there. As far a Z goes, he’s an average player at best who is way more focused on not letting his guy score than playing help D like he should.Jacob: You know what, you’re right. Lebron is way better than Kobe.Dugan: In your dreams, Jacob Bray. Kobe is the best player to ever live.Jacob: K.

Black Rain- A Continuous StoryBy Caitlin Ackley and Ashlie Hall

I see a black truck driving down the street and quickly run over to the side of the road. Frantically waving

our arms, Emy and I watch as the truck continues past, not even slowing down. Noticing the road sign down the street says “Purgatorio, 5 miles” we begin walking along the edge of the road.

I’m not sure how long we are walking, but the sun is beginning to disappear beyond the horizon again and the slight breeze in the air is chilling my bones. Emy pulls her jacket up, snug around her neck, and I take the hood and place it on top her head. Though I can tell she is freezing, she still manages a smile as I tighten the hood around her cheeks. I carefully run my fingers along the cut on her forehead, worried that it might get infected.

“Ebony, how many times do I have to tell you that I’m okay?” Emy laughs and skips ahead of me, as if nothing is wrong.

Little curls of blond hair escape from her hood and float in the air as she continues to skip along the edge of the road. I sigh quietly to myself, and continue walking, wondering how this little girl could possibly be so happy at a time like this.

The sun is completely hidden now and the stars are beginning to appear in the sky. My legs feel numb from all the walking, and I’m about to take a break and sit down on the ground. Emy is about 20 feet ahead of me and, every once in a while, she looks back to make sure I’m still following.

“Ebony!” Emy screams.I look up to see her sprinting towards me.“Ebony, we made it!” she giggles, grabbing my hand and pulling me along.“What are you talking about?” I can’t see anything but road and am seriously worried for Emy’s health.“Look! She turns a corner and pulls me around with her, still holding onto my hand. She stops and points into

the distance, where I see it, lights. Bright white lights, on both sides of the road, form a path leading into the town, which has millions of lights everywhere. It’s not a large town, just the right size for everyone to know each other’s names. Sprinting down the path, Emy stops and turns around to look at me, “Aren’t you coming?”

I smile and run down to her side. Can this really be happening? Are we really one step closer to making it home? My thoughts race as I reach Emy’s side. Could we really have found a town in the middle of nowhere? This all just seems so crazy but I don’t care, I desperately just want to get Emy home, no matter what it takes.

As we near the town, I see a diner, with lights brighter than any other building around.“Emy, let’s go see if we can find a phone.” I tell her.She nods in agreement. We head down to the diner, passing a few small houses and fenced in areas that

look like they are meant for livestock. The closer we get to the building, the brighter it gets.We walk onto the wood porch of the diner and look at each other. Emy takes a deep breath and grabs my

hand. I too take a deep breath and give her tiny hand a little squeeze. I push open the door and... To be continued.

All County BandBy Caitlin Ackley

Each year, some of the most dedicated musicians make it into the All County Band. For 38 years ,the All County Band has been allowing different students from each county to join together to show off their abilities. They work hard all year long and the top few in each section, if fortunate enough, make it. This year, many of the WHS band members were allowed into the All County Band. Senior, Tony Kohls has been in band for seven years ,and this year, he finally made it into the All County Band. After working hard throughout high school, his dedication finally paid off. “I thought it was fun,” Kohls says. He also enjoyed being around some of the best musicians in the county and getting to trydifficult music. Junior, Deanna Juan, believes meeting all the people was the most exciting thing about All County. “I thought it went pretty well,” Juan says, “though I wish there was more challenging music.” This was her first year in the All County band ,but she hopes to do it again next year. While many upperclassmen made it into the All County Band, many underclassmen made it as well. Freshman, Michelle Whitmer enjoyed testing her abilities to play well ,and she says “A new band with a different conductor was a challenge, but the music was fun” Whitmer says “and the directors did a great job organizing everything.” After hard work and preparation, the concert finally rolled around. Everyone did their best and the concert went well. Good job and keep up the good work!

All County ChoirJacob Bray

Wauseon High School has some very talented singers, but so does Delta, Bryan, Swanton, Evergreen, Liberty Center, Fayette, and North Central. Yes, even Archbold. 38 years ago, a group of people decided to combine members of these choirs to form the All County Honors Choir. A select number of singers from each section, soprano, alto, tenor, and bass, are chosen to attend from each school. The amount of students that can be chosen is all relative to the size of the choir. With Wauseon having 26 singers in their choir, 10 were sent to Archbold High School on Friday morning. The members got out of school on Friday, January 20th, to journey to Archbold High School. There, they practiced from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They then went their separate ways for the evening, but on Saturday morning, they were right back to work.Sunday, January 22nd was the performance. The choir sang five songs on Sunday. The All County Band played after the choir. All in all, the concert was very successful. The Wauseon Choir members that were sent to All County Choir were; sopranos Abbi Bell, Taylor Crew, and Faith Lemon, altos Jannelle Nafziger, Adrienne Rolf, and Katie Spieles, tenors Trey Rupp and Austin Tuckerman, and basses Jacob Harmon and Jacob Massie. With the fewest kids that Wauseon has sent in many years to All County, these guys pack the most punch. These choir members listen above range from sophomore to senior in grade, and were chosen for their musical ability as well as their attitude in class. “Each one of these students love to sing, and they show that every day in class,” Mrs. Aeshliman stated. “They try hard to learn their music and excel in singing every day.” All of their hard work seems to pay off time after time. The All County Choir and Band Music Festival was this past weekend, but it sure was a sight to behold. All of the sound blended perfectly. The Red and White staff would like to congratulate all the members of the All County Choir, with a special shout out going to the singers from Wauseon. Keep singing guys!

College Basketball PredictionsBy: Colin Dietrich, Dugan Shadbolt, and Jacob Bray

Harvard at Yale I said it at the beginning of the season and I will say it again..Harvard is a good basketball team with a lot of talent. Harvard wins by 13.

Harvard has been that ivy league school who everyone thinks can compete with top teams, but I don’t see it. I’ll take Yale at home

Harvard is ranked number 21 in the nation. They’re 12-2 on the season right now. Yale is 9-4 and lost to a sub par Quinnipiac team. Havard will win big.

West Virginia at Syracuse

Syracuse is a great team, especially at home. Syracuse wins easily.

Syracuse is one heck of a basketball team this year. Orange by 15.

Syracuse is a very tough team to even come close to beating. The Orange win big.

Kentucky at LSU Kentucky has a very balanced attack. Kentucky wins by a land slide.

Kentucky looks pretty good lately I’ll take the Wildcats Kentucky beats LSU.

Kentucky has no chance!!!!! (at losing.)Wildcats win big.

St Johns at Duke Duke has so many weapons from Rivers to Curry to the Plumlee twins. St. Johns is solid, but I’m going to take the Blue Devils.

St. Johns has been good in the past, but Austin Rivers is on a whole different level. Duke gets the win here.

Despite losses to Ohio State and Temple, Duke is a tough team yet again. Saint John’s isn’t playing well. Duke gets this one.

Texas at Baylor Baylor is a highly talented team and has played great basketball so far this year. Baylor gets the W.

Baylor basketball has really come around again these last couple seasons. I’ll take Baylor and their top rated D.

At this point in the season, Baylor has only lost to Belgium. They get the W over the Longhorns

Georgetown at Pitt Georgetown came into the year a little under the radar without even being ranked. However, they have proved them selves. Georgetown finds a way to win on the road.

Georgetown is all about the basketball and Pitt lost a lot from last year’s team. That being said, Pitt is pretty good. I’ll take the home team here and go with Pitt.

This will be a close one in Pittsburgh. The Hoyas get the win on the road.

Miss. State at Florida

Florida is 5th in the nation with 85.4 points per contest and their loses come to tough opponents. Florida wins at home.

SEC basketball again, but whatever I’ll take Miss. State by 2 or 3

I don’t really care about this game, but since I have to pick, I pick Florida

Michigan at Ohio State

I will never pick OSU if they are playing Michigan. I don’t care if they’re playing water polo. Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr lead the Maize and Blue to a 3 point victory.

This should be a great game. The fact that its in Columbus is a little worrying for a Michigan fan ,but I think this game will come down to the last couple of minutes. I’m taking Michigan because I’ll never pick OSU.

It could be a good game, but only if Sullinger is out. With him on the court, the Buckeyes are practically unstoppable. Bucks win big.
