Why does recycling matter?

Waste is a big problem. Every year, billions of tonnes of household, offi ce and school waste. Too much of this material is still being sent to landfi ll sites or being incinerated, when the best solution to reduce our environmental impact is to recycle and compost as much of our waste as possible.

On average, each person throws away seven times their own body weight (about 500kg) in rubbish every year. Yet it has been estimated that up to 80% of the contents of our dustbins could be recycled or composted.

The 2007/08 EU Waste Framework Directive, due to come into force in 2010, has set EU-wide targets for recycling 50% of household waste by 2020. There is also a requirement for separate collection and recycling of paper, glass, metals and plastic by 2015.

Recycling in the workplace plays a fundamental role in helping to solve our overall national waste problem. By doing so, busi-nesses can make signifi cant cost savings and turn waste into a resource. Currently in most workplaces, the real cost of waste is often between 5 and 20 times the cost of disposal, depending on the size of the company. Reducing the volume of waste sent to landfi ll and increasing the amount we recycle will not only contribute to a greener environment but it will also help businesses to economise.

“Recycling in the workplace plays a

fundamental role in helping to solve our

overall national waste problem”.

“Businesses can make signifi cant cost savings and turn waste into a

resource!”.

Recycling in the workplace need not be a laborious task. It is a straight-forward and manageable way to improve the environment as well as the running of a business. By cooperating, your workplace will help to make a real difference to the future.

Did you know?

By using both sides of A4 paper, your workplace could

save 4 500 € per year.

Three years ago Leeds Metropolitan University replaced a cardboard box-based paper and card recycling system with a new

programme based on the use of Rubbermaid products. It chose Slim Jim and Untouchable plastic recycling bins and Glutton

Recycling Stations with accompanying posters. It now recycles all types of materials instead of just paper and the recycling level

has soared to 75%, with the university aiming to raise this to 90% within a further 18 months.

“Rubbermaid bins are made of strong plastic and have a tremendous amount of

longevity,” says Brian Bolton, Campus Services Manager at Leeds Metropolitan

University. “Bins made of cheaper plastics often break easily and metal bins rust.

We expect to be able to keep the Rubbermaid bins for decades.” The Rubber-

maid solution has also helped Leeds Metropolitan University realise considerable

savings. As well as eliminating the cost of new cardboard boxes every two weeks,

the university is now recycling three times more materials. This has helped to cut

the cost of disposing of the university’s general waste from £200,000 per year

to just £80,000.

Within one year of the Rubbermaid solution being implemented, Leeds Metropolitan

University achieved fi rst place in the rankings of the most environmentally friendly universities in the UK by People & Planet.

How Rubbermaid helped Revolutionise Recycling at Leeds

Metropolitan University

Brian BoltonCampus Services Manager at Leeds

Metropolitan University.

How did Brian Bolton kick off their recycling programme?

Create a launch campaign / kick-off

Implementing a Campaign to Boost Recycling Levels

In order to improve the recycling level on campus, Leeds Metropolitan University implemented a communications campaign to raise awareness of

the importance of recycling amongst the student body. The campaign involved prominently hanging posters all over the campus and distributing

leafl ets in the university’s main reception areas that displayed images of the new Rubbermaid recycling bins, making the students aware of the

newly revamped recycling programme. The posters and leafl ets also clearly indicated which materials could be recycled and which ones could not

be, showing images of glass, plastic and aluminium materials inside a large ‘yes’ circle and images of potentially hazardous materials inside a large

‘no’ cross. This is often a source of confusion for students and staff so properly communicating what (and how) to recycle is very important.

Leeds Metropolitan University also went to speak directly with the students and staff, using several major campus-wide activities to further spread

the recycling message. The university has a ‘freshers festival’ at the beginning of each academic year in order to orientate new students to uni-

versity life. It took advantage of this well-attended event to set up a stand and inform the students about the recycling programme. There is also

a ‘staff development festival’ held later in the year, providing the university with another ideal opportunity to communicate in person as well, this

time to the university staff. In order to attract as much attention as possible to its stand and to transmit the recycling message most effectively,

the university implemented some creative ideas: It organized quiz competitions on the stands, complete with prizes, regarding what could and

could not go into the recycle bins. This not only made it fun but also helped the students and staff better understand the recycling process.

“At Leeds Metropolitan University we’ve made a major effort to promote the recycling programme to both stu-

dents and staff,” says Brian Bolton. “This is key to a successful campaign, and I would highly recommend similar

outreach tactics to other universities or schools desiring to boost recycling on campus. I would also recommend

using Rubbermaid solutions since their design – including the various shaped lid apertures – make it very clear and

easy to understand what should be recycled and where, greatly facilitating the communications process.”

Protecting our Planet

Ensure a sustainable future for our world. Educate and encourage the citizens of tomorrow to reduce waste and recycle more.

By thinking, acting and working together we can all play our part in separating recyclable waste streams and meeting local community and European waste management targets.

By 2015 across the EU all paper, glass, textiles, plastic and metal will no longer go to landfill. Students can exceed recycling targets at school and then go on to lead by example at home and in their future workplaces.

Schools, colleges and universities have a vital role to play in helping to solve our waste problem. Not only is there an important role in the education of tomorrow’s consumers and decision makers, but schools can also make signifi cant cost savings and turn waste into a resource. Currently most schools spend between 350€ and 1.500€ on waste disposal each year depending on their size; reducing waste sent to landfi ll and increasing the amount we recycle is better for the environment and saves money.

“There is an importantrole in the education

of tomorrow’sconsumers”.

“Schools, colleges anduniversities have a vital

role to play in helping tosolve our waste problem ”.

Recycling at school is a hands-on way to show pupils that every single person can help to improve the environment. Students develop valuable problem solving and decision making skills in the process and get to work as a team towards a common goal. Everyone in your school can play their part in making a difference.

Did you know? Most schools in the UK

produce at least1,000 kg

of waste every term.
