Waste Tire Facts
• In 2003 the US alone produced 290 million scrap tires, many of which ended up in landfills.

Recycled Tire Use
• The markets for the use of recylced tires has increased dramatically.
• In 1990 the US re-used 19% of the waste tires produced. This number increased to 80.4% in 2003.

Structural• Tires walls are built by
placing tires flat in layers and then filling them with dirt.
• Tires provide great insulation, and the structures do not require a foundation because of the thickness of the walls.
• Another plus is that the tires may be used directly out of the landfill, and do not require additional preparation.

• Tire baling is now a common process in recycled tire buildings, and is easier than the rammed earth method.
• Both methods have proved effective, and have been proven to be fire-retardent.

Athletic and Recreational
• Playground surfaces
• Tracks
• Skate park construction
Crumb Rubber
• Crumb rubber is made by shredding tires into a mulch. This is then used in playgrounds and tracks. The crumb rubber is a more forgiving surface for playgrounds than the typical wood mulch, and is economically profitable in the long run for it rarely needs replacement.

• The GreenSkate Lab, in Washington DC, has utilized rammed earth tires in the construction of a skate park

Transportation
• The crumb rubber made by shredding tires is also used for fixing breaks in asphalt, as well as most tires produced now use a small percentage (5-15) of recycled rubber.

Fuels
• Burning recycled tires as a fuel source is the leading source of consumption of recycled tires. Of the 290 million waste tires in 2003, 44.7% of those recycled were burned as an energy source.

Benefits of Recycled Tires
• The main benefit of using recycled tires is that it is an abundant resource that otherwise has no use. Tires that are not recycled are simply thrown into landfills. This mindset, however, seems to be taking hold on the US, as we saw from the increase in the market for recycled tires.
