Welcome to Spring Break! Winter 2017 in Central Texas has been unseasonably mild. When driving back from Corpus Christi at the end of my February vacation, I noticed at least three different types of wildflowers already in bloom, certainly two or three weeks ahead of schedule. Spring blooms depend upon careful cultivation of soil in the fall, good rains in the winter and sunshine. During Lent we tend to the soil of our hearts, allowing sorrow for sin to turn into contrition and a deeper desire for God's love. When cooperating with the Holy Spirit, we know that fruitful blooms will result.

The fruit of our faith ought to be visible in our parish community: indeed, as people of faith we are called to be people of hospitality, generosity and mercy. Indeed, we discover our gifts through participation in the community of faith. You may have noticed some improvements in the flower beds in front of the rectory, the Bishops Hall and in the back alley by the Mary statues. These improvements have been done by volunteers -- parishioners who saw a need and got involved. In particular, I wish to thank the LEAPS Team from the City of Austin. I welcome more of this type of activity, and would appreciate hearing from you if you would like to help coordinate the care of our grounds, or would like to adopt a particular flower bed to tend. This is but one example of many ways to nurture and serve the Cathedral community.

Prayer for Seminarians and Priests: Jesus, I thank you for your gift of the priesthood to the Church. I pray for all priests and those in formation for priesthood, especially__________. Form their hearts to be more like your own, the Heart of the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep. Draw them to your Heart, and bless them with courage and zeal as they serve you and your people. Give great joy as they proclaim the Good News of your Resurrection, and wisdom and trust as they discern your will. I ask this with great confidence in you. Amen. Our Father…, Hail Mary…, Glory be… St. John Vianney, patron of priests, pray for us. Please pray for the Cathedral Seminarians, Miguel Flores on the 8th, and Chris Yeager on the 23rd of each month, respectively.
