The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you’” (John 20:19, 20). St. Paul tells us: "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God" (Romans 5:1,2). "For the kingdom of God is not a matter of food and drink, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit; whoever serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by others. Let us then pursue what leads to peace and building up one another" (Romans 14:17). Peace seems illusive in our lives, and yet it is the promise of God. It is a peace that passes human understanding and speaks to the deep needs of our heart. It is the promise of eternal salvation and true communion with our Creator. And it is foundational to the Christian life. Until we know this peace, appropriate it, live it from within, we are unable to fully live the life of the Spirit. If Christ went to such extreme ends to secure our peace, who are we to easily discard it with our personal doubts, fears, and ego needs? Are we committed to be a community of peace, sharing the one mission of Christ? Until we completely trust the Holy Spirit, peace will remain illusive. Are we fully committed to the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace? Fruit of the Spirit - Peace “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places” (John 14:1-2a).

Foundational to our sense of peace is our relationship with God. Jesus assures his disciples at the beginning of this Last Supper Discourse (John 14-17) that all would be well in the end. We know that after this meal Jesus would go off to pray and would be betrayed and arrested. What was to follow was horrible. And yet, at this moment, Jesus chooses to talk about peace. Indeed, the word “peace” is sprinkled throughout the next several chapters in John, throughout this discourse and in his prayer with the Father.

In Old Testament Hebrew “peace” signifies a time of peace as contrasted with a time of war. It also refers to a state of rest as well as well-being and salvation (Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, 1964–, 406.).

In the following verse, Jesus' peace is part of the traditional Hebrew greeting, but also in Jesus' "Shalom" is a gift of salvation, connoting the bounty of messianic blessing: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27).

After the Resurrection as Jesus appears to his disciples, he again gives them his peace: “On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you.

There is nothing like the peace of Christ: it is a treasure worth guarding in our daily prayer lives, and calls forth faith and joy.

Third Sunday of Easter

(continua)

Protecting Children

Matthew 18:2-6

At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.”

April Is Child Abuse Protection Month

Matthew 18:2-6

The Catholic Church is committed to ensuring the safety of children and young people and providing pastoral outreach to victims and survivors of sexual abuse by clergy. The Church’s mission to protect and heal stems from the Gospel: the life and teachings of Jesus Christ provide us with the perfect foundation for our efforts to create safe environments for children. Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Mt 19:14).

“We remain ever vigilant in the protection of children and the outreach to those most harmed by sexual abuse. The Church cannot become complacent with what has been accom-plished.” —Former USCCB President Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, 2015 Annual Report on the Implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. For more information and resources on preventing child abuse in your community, visit http://www. usccb.org/issues-and-action/child-and-youth-protection/child-abuse-prevention-month.cfm.

A Prayer for Healing for Victims of Abuse

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just: You gave your only Son to save us by his Blood on the Cross.

Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear the cries of our brothers and sisters who have been gravely harmed, and the cries of those who love them. Soothe their restless hearts with hope, steady their shaken spirits with faith. Grant them justice for their cause, enlightened by your truth.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us the cour-age and wisdom, humility and grace, to act with justice. Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors. Grant that all harmed by abuse may find peace in justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

Project Stephen: Catholic men of Central Texas, are you sensing a call to the permanent diaconate? Would you like help with what this means and what might be next? Discuss the possibility of your call with your pastor and then, with his permission, come explore next steps with Project Stephen. We meet every third Thursday of the month at 7:00pm, at the diocesan Pastoral Center. More information available at https://austindiocese.org/projectstephen

Prayer for Vocations: God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (from usccb.org/vocations)
