    This document has been prepared to assist you in becoming familiar with the Recovery Manager for

    Exchange. The Evaluator Guide contains the information required to install and use the Recovery

    Manager for Exchange. It is intended for network administrators, consultants, analysts, and any other

    IT professionals using the product.

    Conventions

    In order to help you get the most out of this guide, we have used specific formatting conventions. These

    conventions apply to procedures, icons, keystrokes and cross-references.

    ELEMENT CONVENTION

    Select This word refers to actions such as choosing or highlighting various interface

    elements, such as files and radio buttons.

    About Recovery Manager

    Quest Recovery Manager for Exchange rapidly and efficiently finds and recovers business-critical

    Exchange Server and Lotus Domino data. Organizations can reduce the cost of e-Discovery in addition

    to providing end users with granular, message-level data recovery services.

    By using Recovery Manager, you can selectively retrieve items from online Exchange Servers, offline

    Exchange Server and Lotus Domino databases, and Personal Folders (.pst) files. The retrieved items can

    then be directly restored to a production Exchange Server or to .pst, .eml, .msg, or .txt files.

    Recovery Manager provides a search system to perform context-based searches in live Exchange Server

    mailboxes and public folders, offline Exchange Server and Lotus Domino databases, and Personal Folders

    (.pst) files using keywords and other search criteria. Rather than retrieving all data from a server,

    database, or file, you can retrieve only what is needed.

    Recovery Manager entirely eliminates the need for a recovery Exchange Server, making it easier for you

    to gain access to an offline Exchange Server database. You can restore an Exchange Server database

    from backup to any folder, and then access the database to search and selectively restore the data you

    need.

    Recovery Manager integrates with another Quest Software productArchive Manager, thus allowing you

    to quickly and easily export messages from Exchange Server databases, Lotus Domino databases, and

    Personal Folders (.pst) files into Archive Manager.

    Test Lab Requirements

    For the purpose of the product evaluation, you need a test environment that includes:

    Active Directory domain with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003

    Workstation or server that is a member of your test Active Directory domain

    Permission Requirements

    To set up your test lab and evaluate Recovery Manager, you must have administrative permissions in

    your test domain. It is recommended that you log on with a user account belonging to the Domain

    Admins group of your test domain.

    Test Lab Setup

    To set up your test lab, log on with a user account that belongs to the Domain Admins group of your test

    domain, and then perform the following steps.

    Step 1: Set Up Microsoft Exchange Server

    Install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 in your test Active Directory domain. In this document, it is

    assumed that Exchange Server is installed with the default options.

    The name of the Exchange Server computer is assumed EXCHSERVER. Therefore, this is a placeholder

    for the actual name of your Exchange Server. In the next subsection, you should replace EXCHSERVER

    with your actual Exchange Server name.

    Step 2: Create Test User AccountsIn your test Active Directory domain, create two user accounts and ensure that your test user accounts

    are configured to have mailboxes on your test Exchange Server.

    To create user accounts, you can use the Active Directory Users and Computers tool. By default, this tool

    creates mailbox-enabled user accounts. You just need to ensure that the appropriate server and store

    are selected for the user mailboxes.

    In this document, it is assumed that you have a default installation of Exchange Server, so the following

    settings should be specified for your test user accounts:

    Server: First Organization/First Administrative Group/EXCHSERVER

    Mailbox Store: First Storage Group/Mailbox Store (EXCHSERVER)

    In this document, the test users are referred to as TestUser1 and TestUser2.

    Step 3: Populate Mailboxes and Create Backups

    In this step, you populate the test mailboxes and create two backupsa full backup and a differential

    backupthat you will use when performing your test restores.

    3.1 Add Items to the TestUser1 MailboxUsing Microsoft Outlook or other mail client, send messages to TestUser1:

    One or more messages with the subject Evaluation

    One or more messages with the subject Test

    A message with a file attached; set the subject of this message to Test Attachment

    Using Microsoft Outlook or other mail client, connect to the TestUser1 mailbox and do the following:

    In the mailbox, create a new folder called Test, intended to contain mail items.

    Move the messages with the subject Test from the Inbox folder to the Test folder.

    3.2 Create Full Backup

    Use the following steps to create a normal (full) backup of your Exchange Server:

    To create full backup

    1. On your test Exchange Server computer, run Windows Backup.

    To run Windows Backup, selectStart | Run, type ntbackup, and then press ENTER.

    2. If Windows Backup starts in the wizard mode, on the Welcome page, clear the Always startin wizard mode check box, and then click the Advanced Mode hyperlink.

    3. On the Welcome tab, click the Backup Wizard button. Follow the steps in the BackupWizard.

    4. On the What to Back Up page, click Back up selected files, drives, or network data.

    5. On the Items to Back Up page, expand the Microsoft Exchange Server node and itssubnodes, and then select the check box next to the Microsoft Information Store item.

    6. On the Where to Store the Backup page (Backup Type, Destination and Name as for WindowsServer 2003 or later), ensure that the backup type is set to File, and then specify the pathand name of the backup file. For example, you might specify C:\Backups\ as the path andFullBackup as the backup file name.

    7. Click Next, and then click Finish. Wait while Windows Backup creates the backup.

    Later, you will need to access backup files from a remote computer running Recovery Manager.

    Therefore, you need to share the folder used to store the backup files. To share the folder, use the

    Sharing tab in the folders Properties dialog box.

    3.3 Add Items to the TestUser2 Mailbox

    After creating the full backup but before creating a differential backup, you need to populate the mailbox

    of the second test user. This ensures that the differential backup contains some data not included in the

    last normal (full) backup. You need to create the same items as you created in the mailbox of the first

    test user.

    Using Microsoft Outlook or other mail client, send messages to TestUser2:

    One or more messages with the subject Evaluation

    One or more messages with the subject Test

    A message with a file attached; set the subject of this message toTest Attachment

    With Microsoft Outlook or other mail client, connect to the TestUser2 mailbox and do the following:

    1. In the mailbox, create a new folder called Test, intended to contain mail items.

    2. Move the messages with the subject Test from the Inbox folder to the Test folder.

    Now you are ready to create a differential backup of your test Exchange Server.

    3.4 Create Differential Backup

    To create differential backup

    1. On your test Exchange Server, run Windows Backup.

    To run Windows Backup, selectStart | Run, type ntbackup, and press ENTER.

    2. If Windows Backup starts in the wizard mode, on the Welcome page, clear the Always startin wizard mode check box, and click the Advanced Mode hyperlink.

    3. On the Welcome tab, click the Backup Wizard button. Follow the steps in the BackupWizard.

    4. On the What to Back Up page, click Back up selected files, drives, or network data.

    9. Follow the Backup Wizard and accept the default settings. When the wizard is completed,click Finish. Wait while Windows Backup creates the backup.

    Since you will need to access backup files from a remote computer running Recovery Manager, ensure

    that you have shared the folder used to store the backup files. You can do this from the Sharing tab in

    the folders Properties dialog box.

    Step 4: Delete Items from Test Mailboxes

    Use Microsoft Outlook or other mail client to delete the following items from the TestUser1 mailbox and

    the TestUser2 mailbox:

    The messages with the subjectEvaluation

    The messages with the subject Test Attachment

    TheTestfolder

    After that, empty the Deleted Items folder in each of the test mailboxes.

    Step 5: Set Up Recovery Manager

    Install Recovery Manager on a workstation or server that is a member of your test Active Directory

    domain. In this document, we assume that Recovery Manager is installed on a computer other than that

    running your test Exchange Server.

    For instructions on how to install Recovery Manager and configure it for working with Exchange Server

    databases, see the Installing Recovery Manager and Linking to Exchange Server DLLs sections in the

    Recovery Manager User Guide supplied with this release.

    Once you have installed and configured Recovery Manager, you can start working with this product:

    Select Start | Programs | Quest Software | Recovery Manager for Exchange.

    Performing Test Restores

    This section outlines the procedures you can use to restore the following items from a normal (full)

    backup or from a differential backup of your Exchange Server:

    Entire mailboxes

    Selected messages

    A file attached to a selected message

    Specifically, following the steps in this section, you can

    Use the full backup to restore the items you deleted from the TestUser1 mailbox.

    Use the differential backup to restore the items you deleted from the TestUser2 mailbox.

    The procedures outlined in this section assume that Recovery Manager directly accesses backup media.

    This option only allows you to restore data from

    OpenTape Format (OTF) backups created with EMC Legato NetWorker.

    Tape Archive (TAR) format backups created with Veritas NetBackup.

    Microsoft Tape Format (MTF)-compliant backups, such as backups created with WindowsBackup or Symantec Veritas Backup Exec.

    You can also have Recovery Manager integrate with third-party software to access backups, which

    provides more flexibility and support for various backup formats (seeEvaluating Integration with

    Backup Software on page 17.)

    For the purposes of this evaluation (seeEvaluating Integration with Backup Software on page 17),

    Recovery Manager should not be installed on a computer running Exchange Server. The computer where

    you are installing Recovery Manager must be a member of your test domain.

    Register a Source Storage (Full Backup)

    First, you need to extract the Exchange store database from your full backup and register that database

    with Recovery Manager. You can accomplish this task by using the Add Storage Wizard.

    To register source storage from the full backup

    1. In the left pane of the Recovery Manager main window, select the console tree rootQuestRecovery Manager for Exchange.

    The right pane displays the task pad view.

    2. In the task pad view, click anywhere in the Register Storages box.

    Follow the instructions in the Add Storage Wizard.

    3. On the Select How to Add Storages page, select Access Exchange and/or Dominobackups directly, and click Next.

    4. On the Add Exchange Stores and Domino Databases page, click Add.

    5. In the Select Stores dialog box, click Catalog Backups.

    The Catalog Wizard starts.

    6. On the Select Type of Backup Media page, select Backup files, and click Next.

    7. On the Add Backup Files page, click Add.

    8. Use thedialog box that opens to locate and select the file that holds the full backup(FullBackup.bkf). When finished, click Open.

    9. On the Add Backup Files page, click Next. Wait while the wizard catalogs the backup file.

    When the cataloging operation is complete, click Finish on the Cataloging Media page.

    10. In the Select Stores dialog box, click the plus sign (+) next to the list entry representingthe malbox store.

    11. In the Backup Dates column, select the check box next to the date that represents the fullbackup, and click OK.

    12. On the Add Exchange Stores and Domino Databases page, click Next.

    13. On the Specify Database Location page, click Next.

    Wait while the wizard extracts and registers the mailbox store database.

    14. On the Add Storage Wizard Completed page, click Finish to close the wizard.

    Once you have completed the Add Storage Wizard, a new source storage appears in the

    Source Storages node in the console tree (left pane of the Recovery Manager main window). You can

    select that storage and use commands on the Action menu to restore data from that storage.

    Restore Mailboxes to Their Online Home ExchangeServers

    You can restore entire mailboxes with all their content and settings, including contacts, notes, calendar

    entries, and tasks.

    To restore mailboxes to their online home Exchange Servers

    1. In the console tree, expand the Source Storages node to select the Mailbox Store

    subnode.

    2. In the right pane, select the TestUser1 mailbox.

    3. Select Action | Restore.

    The Mailbox Restore Wizard starts.

    1. Use Microsoft Outlook or other mail client to delete the following items from the TestUser1mailbox:

    The messages with the subject Evaluation The messages with the subject Test Attachment

    The Test folder

    2. Empty the Deleted Items folder in the TestUser1 mailbox.

    Register a Source Storage (Differential Backup)

    To restore data from a differential backup, you need to register a source storagethe Exchange store

    database, extracted from the full backup, and updated with the differential backup. The Add Storage

    Wizard provides the facility to accomplish this.

    First, you need to catalog both the full backup and the differential backup. The full backup is already

    cataloged: you did this when you registered the source storage from that backup.

    Therefore, you only need to catalog the differential backup and register the Exchange store from that

    backup by using the Add Storage Wizard.

    To register source storage from the differential backup

    1. In the left pane of the Recovery Manager main window, select the console tree rootQuest

    Recovery Manager for Exchange.

    The right pane displays the task pad view.

    2. In the task pad view, click anywhere in the Register Storages box.

    Follow the instructions in the Add Storage Wizard.

    3. On the Select How to Add Storages page, select Access Exchange and/or Dominobackups directly, and click Next.

    4. On the Add Exchange Stores and Domino Databases page, click Add.

    5. In the Select Stores dialog box, click Catalog Backups.

    The Catalog Wizard starts.

    6. On the Select Type of Backup Media page, select Backup files, and click Next.

    7. On the Add Backup Files page, click Add.8. Use thedialog box that opens to locate and select the file that holds the differential backup

    (DifferentialBackup.bkf). When finished, click Open.

    9. On the Add Backup Files page, click Next. Wait while the wizard catalogs the backup file.When the operation is complete, click Finish on the Cataloging Media page.

    10. In the Select Stores dialog box, click the plus sign (+) next to the list entry representingthe malbox store.

    Once you have completed the Add Storage Wizard, Recovery Manager is ready to restore data from the

    new source storage. You can restore mailbox items that were added after the creation of the full backup

    (and thus not included in the full backup), as the new source storage also includes the data held in the

    differential backup.

    Before you register a source storage from the differential backup, clean up your test environment as

    described inClean Up Your Test Environment on page 14.

    For example, you can restore the items that were added to the TestUser2 mailbox after you created the

    full backup (seeTest Lab Setup on page 8). Use the steps described earlier in this section to restore

    items from the new source storage (seeRestore Messages to Their Online Home Mailboxes on page 13

    andRestore Attachment on page 14). You only need to change the name of the target mailboxspecify

    TestUser2 rather than TestUser1 when selecting the target mailbox.

    Restore Mailboxes to Separate .Pst Files

    You can use Recovery Manager to restore entire mailboxes to a specified location. In this test, the

    TestUser2 mailbox will be restored to a Personal Folders (.pst) file.

    To restore mailboxes to separate .pst files

    1. In the left pane of the Recovery Manager main window, select the console tree rootQuestRecovery Manager for Exchange.

    The right pane displays the task pad view.

    2. In the task pad view, click anywhere in the Restore Mailboxes box.

    Follow the instructions in the Mailbox Restore Wizard.

    3. On the Add Mailboxes to Restore page, click Add.

    4. In the dialog box that opens, expand the Mailbox Store node, and select the check box nextto the TestUser2 mailbox. When finished, click OK.

    5. On the Add Mailboxes to Restore page, click Next.

    6. On the Select Type of Target Storage page, click Restore each mailbox to a separate .pstfile, and click Next.

    7. On the Specify Target .Pst Files Options page, click Browse to locate and select the folderwhere you want to create the target .pst file. When finished, click OK.

    8. Follow the steps in the wizard to complete the restore operation.

    Check the Restore Results

    You can use Microsoft Outlook or other mail client to open the TestUser2.pst file in the location you

    specified in the Mailbox Restore Wizard and to verify that all the messages you deleted are now restored.

    The Test folder is also restored along with all its contents.

    Delete Items from the Test Mailbox

    Use Microsoft Outlook or other mail client to delete the following items from the TestUser2 mailbox:

    The messages with the subject Evaluation

    The messages with the subject Test Attachment

    The Test folder

    After that, empty the Deleted Items folder in the TestUser2 mailbox.

    Export Messages to Individual .Msg Files

    You can use Recovery Manager to find the messages you deleted from a mailbox and export them to

    preferred format. In this test, messages are exported to separate .msg files.

    Step 1: Find Messages in the Source StorageTo find messages in the source storage

    The right pane displays the Find view.

    2. In the Find view, click the Browse button next to the Search in box.

    4. On the Specify Options for Target .Msg Files, click Browse to browse for and select thelocation where you want to generate target .msg files.

    5. Click Next and follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the message exportoperation.

    Check the Restore Results

    You can inspect the .msg files generated in the location you specified in Step 2: Export Messages to

    verify that the messages are now exported to the selected format.

    Evaluating Integration with Backup Software

    This section describes how to register a source storage from a backup managed by third-party backupsoftware. Windows Backup is used as an example to illustrate how Recovery Manager integrates with

    backup software. Similar procedures are applicable to other software, such as Symantec Veritas Backup

    Exec, Veritas NetBackup, and Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup, provided that client

    components of this software are installed on the computer running Recovery Manager. For details on

    how to use third-party backup software in conjunction with Recovery Manager, see the Recovery

    Manager User Guide.

    Recovery Manager integrates with backup software to locate and access existing Exchange backups,

    regardless of the backup format, type of media, or storage device.

    To provide interoperability with backup software, Recovery Manager offers the following methods for

    registering storages from backups:

    Access to backup server is only used to integrate with such backup software products as

    EMC Legato NetWorker, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, Microsoft Data Protection Manager, and InMage

    DR-Scout. To integrate with other products, Recovery Manager uses Exchange Server emulation.

    This section illustrates how to use the first of these methodsExchange Server emulation. In principle,

    this method enables Recovery Manager to integrate with any backup software that is capable of backing

    up and restoring Exchange Server data.

    General steps in the restore process are:

    Step 1: Start Exchange Server Emulation Using Recovery Manager

    Step 2: Redirect Restore to the Recovery Manager Computer

    Step 3: Restore Backup to Recovery Manager Step 4: Complete Registration of the Restored Database

    In the scenario considered in this section, Windows Backup is running on the Exchange Server computer

    while Recovery Manager is running on a different computer. As a result, Windows Backup restores the

    backup to the remote Exchange Server. This scenario is typical when using the Exchange Server

    emulation method. When restoring an Exchange backup, you must ensure that your backup software is

    configured to restore data to a remote server.

    METHOD DESCRIPTION

    Exchange Server emulation The computer running Recovery Manager appears as an Exchange Server to

    the backup software. You can restore Exchange Server backups by redirecting

    the restore to the Recovery Manager computer.

    Access to backup server Recovery Manager connects to a backup server that is part of the backup

    infrastructure, issues requests for backups stored on that server, and uses

    standard protocols to retrieve the backups and restore data from them.

    Access to backup server is only used to integrate with such backup software

    products as EMC Legato NetWorker, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, Microsoft

    Data Protection Manager, and InMage DR-Scout. To integrate with other

    products, Recovery Manager uses the Exchange Server Emulation method.

    Exchange Server emulation only works if Microsoft Exchange Server is not installed on the computer

    running Recovery Manager.

    6. On the Specify Exchange Server Emulation Options page, select Exchange Server 2000,2003, or 2007,and click Next.

    7. On the Specify Database Location page, click Next.

    8. Wait until the Status box on the Emulating Exchange Server page displays Emulationstarted. Waiting for connection from backup application.

    The computer running Recovery Manager now appears as an Exchange Server to the backupsoftware.

    You can now restore Exchange backups to the Recovery Manager computer. The evaluation scenario

    considered in this section assumes that Windows Backup is running on a different computer. Therefore,

    you need to have Windows Backup redirect restore to the computer running Recovery Manager. The

    procedure of redirecting restore to the computer running Recovery Manager is described inStep 2:

    Redirect Restore to the Recovery Manager Computer on page 20.

    The requirement to redirect restore to the remote computer is typical when you use backup software in

    conjunction with Recovery Manager in the Exchange Server emulation mode. For instructions on how to

    restore data to a remote Exchange Server by using your particular backup software, refer todocumentation from your backup software vendor.

    Step 2: Redirect Restore to the Recovery ManagerComputer

    This subsection describes how to configure Windows Backup to restore Exchange data to the remote

    computer running Recovery Manager.

    To redirect resrtore to the Recovery Manager computer

    1. On your test Exchange Server computer, run Windows Backup.

    To run Windows Backup, selectStart | Run, type ntbackup, and then press ENTER.

    2. If Windows Backup starts in the wizard mode, on the Welcome page, clear the Always startin wizard mode check box, and then click the Advanced Mode hyperlink.

    3. Click the Backup tab, and then select Tools | Remote Store.

    4. In the Remote Store dialog box, enter the name of the computer running RecoveryManager, and then click OK.

    Windows Backup is now ready to restore an Exchange backup to the computer running

    Recovery Manager.

    Step 3: Restore Backup to Recovery Manager

    To restore backup to Recovery Manager

    1. In Windows Backup, click the Restore tab (Restore and Manage Media as for WindowsServer 2003).

    2. In the left pane of the Restore tab, expand the File node.

    3. Expand the node that represents the media containing your full backup (File |FullBackup.bkfas for Windows Server 2003), and then select the check box next to\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group.

    In this step it is assumed that you created the full backup using Windows Backup on thisExchange Server computer (see 3.2 Create Full Backup on page 9).

    4. Click Start Restore.

    5. In the Restoring Database Store dialog box, do the following:

    a) In the Restore To box, type the name of the computer running Recovery Manager.

    b) In the Temporary location for log and patch files box, type a local path to a folder,such as C:\TempLogs. It is a local path on the computer running Recovery Manager. Thiscomputer must have enough free disk space to accommodate the log and patch files.

    c) Select the Last Backup Set check box (Last Restore Set as for Windows Server 2003).

    6. When finished, click OK.

    7. Wait while Windows Backup restores the backup. When finished, in the Restore Progressdialog box, click Close.

    Once you have completed these steps, go to the computer running Recovery Manager to completeregistration of the restored database. The relevant procedure is described inStep 4: Complete

    Registration of the Restored Database on page 21.
