Research into Record Labels

Page 2: Record labels

Ram Records are one of the record labels for Sub Focus. This is the band that sings ‘Turn it Around’, which is the song that I am using in my music video.

“Ram is a genre leading dance music record label primarily releasing Drum & Bass music.Established in 1992 by Andy C with the help of close friend Ant Miles, the label and business

today is run Andy C and business partner Scott Bourne (Red One). Ram Records is multi award winning organisation for its label activities, the music it releases, and the artists it has signed

over the years. As well as Ram's musical output, the label is also very well know for its legendary club nights. This all started at the infamous 'The End' nightclub and lasted 11 years till the clubs closure in December 2008. Moving on from The End to super-club Matter in February2009 saw

Ram's attendees triple from 1000 to well over 3000 people within 2 months and lasted till Matters closure in June 2010. Now Ram are proud to call Fabric it's London home. Ram has a sell-out roadblock sessions every 2 months at this institution as well as one off events all over

the world.Read more at http://ramrecords.com/about-ram#c4M0wLxbZHjvq1YR.99”.

“Dirty Hit is an independent record label that was formed in 2009. It was founded through a desire to develop and nurture home grown artists. Our frustration with out dated record company models led us to make a commitment to work using long term career building principals. We aim to offer a bespoke A&R and marketing service for all our artists prioritising their individual needs and helping them achieve their potential, we love making and selling music!”

Dirty Hit is more for alternative bands. However, it was interesting looking at a more niche record label. This is because they would focus more on your artist as they are not universal and they could help more with the up and coming artists. However, I don think Sub focus is the right band for them as they are a record label more for alternative rather than drum and bass.

Epic records have a wide range of artists with different genre’s. However, from looking at the list of artists

signed to the record they have a hint of rock and punk. For example, The Script, Avril Lavigne and the king of

pop himself, Michael Jackson. They even have some RnB artists. Although this record label is very successful it is

too mainstream for Sub Focus.

“Grid Recordings is a UK based independent record label based in South London primarily releasing Drum and Bass / Jungle music. The label was founded in 2000 by Lee Greenaway,

and has over the years released music from some of the most widely known names within the Drum and Bass scene”. Although, Sub Focus are an already well established band in the UK.

Therfore, I am not sure that Grid Recordings would benefit the band greatly.

Grid Recordings, in my opinion, seems like and up and coming record label that is fresh and supplies for the young market of 16’25 year olds which is my target audience. This would be a

record label that I would consider for Sub Focus.

Sony Music have a variety of Record Labels that have contracts with extremely well known and successful artists, such as, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus. Thier head

quarters are in New York and they have labels all over the world, including Son y Music UK.Columbia Records have a contract with Beyonce and One Direction. They supply for the

mainstream market of pop. Sub Focus would fit in nicely as his music is not too drum and bass, there is a sound of pop and his music has been very popular in the UK charts. I think that Sony

Music could bring his work over to America and make him become noticed over seas.

I, personally, believe that the Record Labels that Sub Focus are using are perfect for their genre of music (Ram Records and

OWSLA). However, if I wanted the band to have universal success, I would aim to get them a record deal with Sony Music. Sony

Music would help gain Sub Focus more success and get them more well-known. All in all I am going to choose Sony Music as I believe that this has more potential for the

music to be heard and the video to be seen.
