Open to all Elks members, the three- day, 54-hole event has three divisions: Open, Senior and Ladies. The difficult Don Ross designed course was no match for Bobbs as he led the tournament after the first day by two strokes and maintained the lead through- out the event to take home the Senior Championship trophy. Meanwhile, Kunar enjoyed playing with the lady members. Bobbs played with Elks members from New Jersey, Connecticut, Kentucky and Florida, but competed with golfers from across the nation. LEAGUE UPDATE n PORTAGE COUNTY MENS: Greg Bills and Mike Leindecker continue to lead the league. Jeff Clapper fired the low gross with a score of 42, as Jeff Clapper carded a 32 for low net. Mike Leindecker was closest to the pin. n KENT STATE UNIVERSITY LADIES: Betsy Mako and Mary Karnowski have built up a lead in the KSU Ladies League. Karnowski fired a 48 for the low gross score, with Rita Phillips only needing 15 putts for her round. Claudia Pittinger chipped in on the 13th hole, Pat Helsel on the 16th hole and Rebecca Kapler on the 12th. n OAK KNOLLS 18-HOLE LADIES: The women in the 18-hole Oak Knolls League on Wednesday counted the odd holes for their game of the week. Cham- pion of the A Flight was Barb Rostedt, with Jean Polack taking the B Flight. LOCAL SUCCESS AT NOPGA STROKE PLAY TOURNAMENT Chagrin Valley Country Club Chagrin Valley Country Club features fast greens and undulating fairways, which proved to be a challenge for the Northern Ohio PGA Stroke Play tourney’s 60 competitors. Mitch Camp of Club Walden in Auro- ra earned the runner-up position with an even-par round of 70, just missing the championship spot by one stroke to Jay- sen Hansen of Beechmont. Jamie Broce, University of Toledo men’s varsity golf coach fired a 1-over- par, good for a tie for third place. The top 10 included Gary Trivisonno of Aurora, PGA lifetime member, in a tie for fifth place with a round of 72; and Rob Moss of Pepper Pike Club — a Kent State varsity golf alumnus. Mark Sierak of Aurora’s Barrington Golf Club tied Tony Adcock of Hartville’s Lakeview Golf Club, each scoring 3-over- par 73s. A FAMILIAR FACE Golf fans watching the action of the PGA Tour this weekend at Dean & DeLu- ca Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth will note several local connec- tions to the Portage County area. Garrettsville native Colt Knost — fresh off his stellar performance at the Byron Nelson, where he finished tied for fourth last Sunday — has made the cut again and was within the top 20 on Saturday. Chad Collins, PGA professional from In- dianapolis, who played at Methodist Uni- versity, also made the cut to play for the weekend. Keep an eye on Collis as his caddy is Randy Dietz. Dietz (Mogadore) is a former Kent Roosevelt standout and Kent State Uni- versity varsity golf team member and is a member of the Northern Ohio PGA. Followers of the local golf scene will also recognize Jason Kokrak, who com- peted for Xavier University and was a OHSAA state golf tournament medalist in 2003 for Warren JFK High School, earning Golfer of the Year honors. CLEARVIEW LEGACY FOUNDATION Clearview Golf Course, Canton LPGA professional Renee Powell invites her friends from the LPGA Tour for the an- nual Pro-Am at the historic Clearview Golf Club on June 6. Sunday’s dinner is hosted by Pitts- burgh Steelers Hall of Famer Franco Har- ris and will be hosted at the Kent State University Stark Conference Center on June 5. It wasn’t just raining, it was a down- pour as golfers took to the fairways to play for great causes, including the successful Kent Roosevelt High School DECA program and the Rough Riders’ golf program. Golfers took cover on the Oak Knolls patio prior to com- peting. Many Kent Roosevelt alumni and for- mer Kent Roosevelt DECA and varsity golf- ers returned to play and support the outing that was originally started by Dick Pfeiffer and continued by the Pfeiffer family includ- ing. The proposed activities include: • Neighborhood Fac./Community Center – The funds will be used to provide needed repairs to the Community Center and Hall located at 9647 East Center Street in the Village of Windham to serve an area that is 65% LMI - $121,400 (CDBG) • Neighborhood Fac./Community Center – The funds will be used to construct a walkway that leads from the handicapped accessible parking spots to the elevator as well as an entrance lobby to the elevator at the annex portion of the Mantua Township Administration and Community Buildings Main Building located at 11741 Mantua Center Road in Mantua Township to benefit 4,811 persons - $36,800 (CDBG) • Neighborhood Fac./Community Center The funds will be used to purchase and install LED lighting at the Coleman Adult Day Services located at 6695 North Chestnut Street in the City of Ravenna to benefit 130 adults with physical, cognitive or development disabilities and their care givers annually - $26,700 (CDBG) • Public Facilities – The funds will be used to provide ADA handicap accessibility by installing and upgrading 45 curb ramps and 7,147 square feet of sidewalk along Highland Avenue to Central Avenue as well as along Prospect Street to Summit Street in the City of Ravenna - $63,100 (CDBG) + the City of Ravenna will contribute $6,816.00 • Fair Housing - $7,000 • Administration of the Grant - $55,000 Total = $310,000 If one of the projects above is not funded the money will be allocated to the following: • Street Improvements – Improve infrastructure on East Prospect Street from State Route 44 to High Street in the Village of Mantua, which is an area of approximately 1,350 linear feet in order to eliminate a slum and blight.
