INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Have you ever felt a compelling urge to respond to a

situation and then found yourself questioning whether you

should do so? Fear often takes hold of us, and we find

ourselves making excuses for why it is better to just mind

our own business. There is a voice within each of us that is

saying, "Follow me". What does this prompting mean? The

purpose of discipleship is not to secure our own station in

life and enhance our comfort zone. Discipleship is about

taking risks and venturing forth into the unknown, tending

to the needs of others and being prophetic voices of change.

We will not drink deeply of life until we listen to the voice

of God within. When God asks, "Whom shall I send?", will

you reply, "Here I am Lord, send me!"?

Stephen Ministries Update: Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one lay caring ministry. Stephen Ministers are trained to provide high-quality,

confidential, non-judgmental, Christ-centered care to people dealing with life’s issues. The Stephen Ministry team has just completed 15 sessions of training with just three more sessions to complete. The team will be completing their classes in February and will be commissioned at the 10:00 a.m. Mass on March 3rd. At that time, we will begin to assign Stephen Ministers to care receivers. Brochures will be placed in the back of church with more information about this ministry. You can also request assistance by contacting the parish office or by calling Ellen Topp at 419-733-4440 or Linda Kuenning at 419-302-2223.

Are you looking for something REWARDING to

do? We are looking for a volunteer to lead the group that serves at the Loaves & Fishes meal site. Loaves & Fishes is a community meal that is served weekly in Wapakoneta. Our parish has been active in this mission for over 18 years. We are responsible for preparing and serving the meal every 6-8 weeks. Leading this group is the easiest and most rewarding “job” you could ever volunteer for. We have over 20 volunteers that are ready to work with you! We just need someone to take charge. If you are interested, please contact Brad at the parish office. If you would like to know more about the actual responsibilities and time commitment required, you can reach Cathi Hall at 419-305-7094. We hope to continue this mission at Holy Redeemer – please consider leading this group!

We will have Adoration during the entire Men’s CRHP/Welcome weekend retreat, February 23-24. To do this, we need to make sure that there is someone always present. We ask everyone to pray for a successful retreat, but for those that can spend time in Adoration, a sign-up sheet is available at the welcome desk – please prayerfully consider helping us out and spending an hour in Adoration. Adoration is also available every Tuesday at Holy Redeemer from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Religious Education: This week both sessions of 5th Grade took the ACRE test. The Acre test is a test that the Archdiocese requires to be administered

to at least one grade level at every parish CCD program in the diocese. It can be given to 5th graders, 8th graders, Juniors or

Seniors. It is not a “Pass or Fail” test but a test to see how well the children of your parish are learning their faith. Below are a

sample of the 52 questions on the 5th grade test:

• Which of the four are the four evangelists?

A) Matthew, Mark, Luke, John B) Peter, Paul, James, John

C) James, John, Peter, Andrew

• What is the meaning of the Immaculate Conception?

A) Mary was conceived without original sin B) Jesus did not have a human father.

C) Mary was taken up into Heaven D) Mary is a model of faith.

• On Pentecost Sunday, Christians celebrate:

A) The baptism of Jesus B) Jesus dying on the cross C) Jesus returning to Heaven

D) The Holy Spirit coming to the disciples.

• Which statement best describes how the Church is united to and dependent upon Jesus Christ?

A) “Come follow me.” B) “Let the Children come to me.” C) “I am the vine and you are the Branches.”

• In the story of the prodigal son, how did the father act when the prodigal son came home?

A) Angry B) Joyful C) Sad D) Unfriendly

This week the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors joined together to talk about Anxiety, Depression, and Suicide. Father Mike

Schmitz, from Ascension, has just released new lessons addressing this topic. The students listened to a powerful speaker who

shared with them the story of his family’s struggles. Infidelity, divorce, his oldest brother dying suddenly in the middle of a

basketball open gym, his next 2 brothers eventually going to prison, and his father committing suicide. He said that his dad talked

about the demons in the world after his brothers had been incarcerated and his dad urged him to pray out loud. The best part of

the night for me, was when he paused to gain his composure. All the students were so respectful and did not say a word. You

could almost feel them saying silent prayers that he could go on. After the talk many of them, along with their written thank you,

wrote I’ll be praying for you.

The students were then given information on the importance of sleep and what they eat, and one of our teachers shared

how wide spread this problem is. He explained that 30-50% of patients are diagnosed with Anxiety and Depression. One of the

misconceptions people have is that they can have a life with NO Anxiety and NO Depression. He explained how we all live in

the middle, our life

wavering between one

side or the other. He

asked us to think about

Jesus in the Garden of

Gethsemane. None of

us is alone. The

students were urged to

find someone who will

listen.

All parishioners are invited to the Ash Wednesday Soup Supper sponsored by the Holy Redeemer Youth Group. The meal is on March 6 and will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Again, all are welcome!

GOSPEL MEDITATION

Do you have enough? Many of us come from a nation of material abundance. We have all the things we could possibly need not

only to survive, but to thrive - food, shelter, mental ability, income, access to medical care. Most people in human history lived

with far less than we. So why are we so dissatisfied? Some Christians can be drawn to the "prosperity Gospel." This is the idea

that following God will bring us material abundance in this life.

That surely seems to be the story of today's Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time

at Jesus' command. "They caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other

boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking."

What gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they'd

ever seen. Yet what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave

it behind. "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him."

Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing! Jesus himself includes

"give us this day our daily bread" in the prayer he teaches his disciples. The question is, how do

we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him

completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? "God, You showed up in

an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need.

You love me! You really do love me." Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow

ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship?

MASS SCRIPTURE READINGS & REFLECTIONS

This Week: February 10 – Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading – Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8

I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? Who will go for

us?" "Here I am," I said; "send me!" (Is 6:8)

In witnessing the revelation of God's holy presence, Isaiah was deeply troubled by

his own sin. Then the Lord freed him from his sin, and he was open to do God's

will. How would you describe your spiritual disposition after reconciliation with

the Lord?

Second Reading – 1 Corinthians 15:1-11: Therefore, whether it be I or they, so we preach and so you believed. (1 Cor 15:11)

Paul reports to the Corinthians of the many people to whom Jesus revealed himself

after he rose from the dead. Paul includes himself on that list, speaking frequently

of God's grace. Where do you see God's grace in your life?

Gospel – Luke 5:1-11:

Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." When they brought their boats to the shore, they

left everything and followed him. (Lk 5:10b-11)

Luke offers us a lot of insights into the personality of Peter with his account of Jesus' call of the first disciples. What do we know

about Peter based on this call narrative?

Next Week: February 17 – Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING – Jeremiah 17:5-8:

Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD; whose hope is in the LORD. (Jer 17:7)

The prophet Jeremiah urged his fellow Israelites from Judah to trust in divine providence rather than human wisdom. Why do

you think believers today still trust people more than God?

SECOND READING – 1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20:

If Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some among you say there is no

resurrection of the dead? (1 Cor 15:12)

Paul places our share in Jesus' resurrection from the dead as core to our Christian beliefs.

What might you add to this list of our core beliefs?

GOSPEL – Luke 6:17, 20-26: Raising his eyes toward his disciples [Jesus] said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for the

kingdom of God is yours." (Lk 6:20)

We hear today of Luke's account of Jesus' Sermon on the Plain, which consists of both

blessings and woes. Where do you see yourself in this mix of curses and blessings?

Question: What kind of religious practices should we begin, once we marry, to help us practice our faith each day?

Answer: Your spiritual life as a couple is important. The sacrament of Marriage is a gift and a grace, but living it well isn't always easy! It requires intentionality and perseverance. Growing your spiritual life as a couple also requires a plan. Life can be incredibly busy. There's never "enough time" for everything we want to do. But we can live by our priorities. If we don't prioritize prayer, we'll find it slowly disappear from our lives. If you're not already praying individually, that's a good place to start. If your schedules are similar, take some quiet time at the same time to help hold each other accountable. Praying together is also important! You could start by looking at the religious practices of your family and of families around you that you respect. Talk with your spouse about the ones who make the deepest impression on you or were most meaningful when you were young. Think about what you want your future children to experience. Making faith a commitment now will mean it is engrained habit when you grow your family. Ultimately, these faith practices should help us grow in our love for God and for one another.
