Deep groove ball bearingsSingle row bearings can support radialand additional axial loads acting inboth directions and are suitable forhigh speed operation. The basicdesign is an open (unsealed) bearing(➔ fig 1). SKF deep groove ball bear-ings are also available with shields(non-rubbing seals), or with seals (low-friction seals and rubbing seals)(➔ fig 2) at one or both sides.

Deep groove ball bearings are usedin a large number of different applica-tions, mainly for inking, dampeningand paper guiding rollers but also inbookbinding lines, folders and otherprint finishing machines.

Bearings for inking rollers, dampening rollers, paper guidingrollers etc.SKF offers a wide selection of deepgroove ball bearings in an open ver-sion or with shields or seals (low fric-tion and rubbing seals). For applica-tions with higher misalignments thannormal SKF offers a comprehensiverange of self-aligning ball bearingsand spherical roller bearings.

For oscillating rollers needle rollerbearings and cylindrical roller bearingsare mainly used. On top of the stand-ard assortment SKF offers a speciallydesigned range of cylindrical rollerbearings with extended inner rings. Also cylindrical roller bearings of theRNU design can be matched with innerrings which fit into the application.

Bearings for pre-press applicationsand print finishing machinesNormally standard bearings are usedfor this segment in a wide variety oftypes and sizes. In addition to highquality, availability is one of the mostimportant requirements for these products.

Self-aligning ball bearingsSelf-aligning ball bearings have tworows of balls with a common spheredraceway in the outer ring. This gives the self-aligning property, permittingangular misalignment of the shaft rel-ative to the housing. The bearings areavailable in an open (unsealed) design (➔ fig 3) or with rubbing seals at bothsides (➔ fig 4). Self-aligning ball bear-ings are produced with a cylindricalbore as well as with a tapered bore(taper 1:12).

Due to the ability to accommodatemisalignment, self-aligning ball bear-ings are mainly used to support widerollers with high deflection.

Angular contact ballbearingsSKF angular contact ball bearings areproduced in a wide variety of designsand sizes. Those commonly used inthe printing machine industry are

• single row angular contact ball bearings (➔ fig 5),

• double row angular contact ball bear-ings (➔ fig 6),

• four-point contact ball bearings (➔ fig 7), and

• high precision angular contact ballbearings (➔ fig 8).

Single row angular contact ball bearingsSingle row bearings for universal match-ing are commonly used for the axialsupport of printing cylinders togetherwith printing cylinder bearing units forsupporting radial loads (➔ fig 1, page36). When using universally matchedsingle row angular contact ball bear-ings, SKF recommends the use ofmedium clearance (suffix BECBP) orlight preload (suffix BEGAP).

Double row angular contact ball bearingsDouble row angular contact ball bear-ings can accommodate heavy radialloads and axial loads acting in bothdirections. The bearings are also

Page 7: Recommended Product Range€¦ · printing cylinders. Especially for offset printing presses SKF suggests the use of high precision spherical roller bear-Introduction Printing presses

Cylindrical roller bearingsSingle row bearings are produced invarious designs for heavy, purely radial loads (e.g. NU (➔ fig 10) and Ndesigns) and for additional light axialloads acting in one or both directions(e.g. NJ and NUP designs). Thesebearing designs are much used ingearing systems and power transmis-sion for printing presses.

Cylindrical roller bearings for oscillating rollersCylindrical roller bearings are alsoavailable without inner ring (RNUdesign) (➔ fig 11) and can be used to run directly on a shaft or they canbe matched with inner rings withextended width. Such bearings arebest suited for the support of oscillat-ing rollers.

Specially designed SKF cylindricalroller bearings (➔ fig 12) are usedsuccessfully for rotating and simultan-eously oscillating shafts of reciprocat-ing rollers. The bearings are designedwith extended inner ring to give therequired axial displacement. Bearingsare fitted with a polyamide cage andare mainly grease lubricated but canalso be integrated into a central oil circulating system.

available as standard with shields(non-rubbing seals), and seals (rub-bing seals), at both sides (➔ fig 9).

Double row angular contact ball bear-ings are commonly used as locatingbearings for printing cylinders, in geartransmissions and in other applicationswhere the carrying capacity of deepgroove ball bearings is not enough.

Four-point contact ball bearingsFour-point contact ball bearings aresingle row angular contact ball bear-ings having raceways which are de-signed to support axial loads in bothdirections (➔ fig 7). They need lessaxial space than double row bearings.

Four-point contact ball bearings areoften used in the drive arrangementsof web and sheet fed presses togetherwith cylindrical roller bearings.

High precision angular contact ball bearingsSKF high precision angular contactball bearings (➔ fig 8) are produced inthree different dimension series – 719,70 and 72 – and are available withcontact angles of 15˚ (suffix CD) and25˚ (suffix ACD).

Bearings for universal pairing areidentified by the designation suffix Gfollowed by A, B or C for the preloadclass (e.g. 71910 ACDGA/P4A). Sets

of two bearings for universal pairingwith matched bore and outside dia-meters are also available. Dependingon preload class, these carry the designation suffix DGA, DGB,or DGC(e.g. 7006 CD/P4ADGB).

High precision angular contact ballbearings are produced as standard totolerance class P4A specifications andare used for high precision applicationssuch as printing cylinders or transfercylinders in sheet fed presses or anyother application where the highestpossible accuracy is needed.

Precision support bearings for balland roller screws (of series BSA orBSD) are also suitable for the aboveapplications. For more information seeSKF catalogue 4950 “High precisionbearings”.

High precision cylindrical roller bearingsCylindrical roller bearings used forthese applications have a double rowdesign based on series NNU 49 (➔ fig 13) and NN 30 (➔ fig 14). Therollers of the NNU type bearings areguided between the flanges of theouter ring whilst those of NN typebearings are guided between theflanges of the inner ring. The bearingshave a higher tolerance class thannormal (SP) and can be supplied withcylindrical bore or with tapered bore(taper 1:12). To achieve efficient lub-rication, all bearings are provided with an annular groove and lubricationholes in the outer ring (the W33 fea-ture). Cages are available in brass orpolyamide 6,6 depending on bearingsize.

High precision cylindrical rollerbearings are well suited to supportprinting cylinders of any kind, bear-ings of the NNU 49 design are oftenused in transfer cylinders of sheet fedpresses. Bearings of NN 30 designform the basis of the printing cylinderbearing units (PCU) (➔ page 9).

Fig 14 High precision cylindrical rollerbearing, series NN 30

Fig 15 Drawn cup needle roller bearing

Needle roller bearingsNeedle roller bearings incorporatecylindrical rollers which are thin andlong in relation to their diameter. Inspite of their low cross section, thebearings have a high load carryingcapacity and are thus suitable forbearing arrangements where radial space is limited.

Commonly used types are

• drawn cup needle roller bearings (➔ fig 15),

• needle roller bearings without innerring (➔ fig 16), and

• needle roller bearings with inner ring(➔ fig 17).

For applications where an adequateseal is not available or cannot be provided for space reasons, sealedneedle roller bearings can be supplied.

Needle roller bearings are widelyused in various applications in printfinishing machines. Instead of needleroller bearings, printing cylinders areincreasingly being fitted with highprecision spherical roller bearings (➔ page 10) or printing cylinder bear-ing units (PCU) (➔ page 9). The print-ing cylinder bearing units with 3 or 4rings incorporate needle roller andcage assemblies to ensure smooth(and frictionless) adjustment of theeccentric rings.

Printing cylinder bearing units (PCU)Printing cylinder bearing units (PCU)(➔ fig 19) combine the functions ofthe separate components of the tradi-tional bearing arrangement into a compact self-contained unit. Severaldesigns are available in a range ofsizes tailored to meet the needs of theprinting press manufacturers.

They are based on high precisioncylindrical roller bearings NN 30 andare multi-row (2, 3 or 4) cylindricalroller bearings where usually the outerring is replaced by an eccentric ring. Some designs have one or two eccent-ric intermediate rings (➔ fig 20), eachsupported by a double row needle

Fig 18 Inner ring

Fig 19 Printing cylinder bearing unit (PCU)

Fig 20 Some printing cylinder bearing units have one or two eccentric intermediate rings, each supported by a double row needle roller and cage assembly

Inner ringsSKF also supplies loose inner rings (➔ fig 18) for use with needle rollerbearings or cylindrical roller bearingswithout inner ring in cases where theshaft cannot be hardened and ground. It is also possible to use extendedinner rings in order to permit largeraxial displacements of the shaft relat-ive to the housing or to provide idealriding surfaces for the lips of seals.

roller and cage assembly. The outer-most ring is usually cylindrical.

The units are designed to facilitatethe adjustment of printing cylinders inoffset presses required during printingpress operation. They can also be usedfor other printing technologies than off-set as well as for any other applicationwhere eccentricity is needed.

10

Taper roller bearingsThe standard bearings are single rowbearings for heavy radial and simultan-eously acting heavy single directionaxial loads (➔ fig 22). Two bearings onthe shaft are adjusted against eachother in order to give clearance orpreload, depending on the require-ments of the application.

SKF offers a special tailored rangeof high precision taper roller bearingsfor printing cylinders or transfer cylin-ders in sheet fed presses (➔ fig 23).These special bearings are based ondouble row taper roller bearings withthe roller rows arranged back-to-back.The bearings are preloaded in opera-tion and the running accuracy is to tolerance class P4.

Fig 22 Taper roller bearing

Spherical roller bearingsThese are double row bearings, whichare self-aligning and consequentlyinsensitive to errors of alignment of theshaft relative to the housing and toshaft bending (➔ fig 21). In addition toradial loads, the bearings can alsoaccommodate axial loads acting inboth directions.

Spherical roller bearings with nor-mal tolerances are used in the powertransmission of printing presses or tosupport wide rollers with high deflec-tion.

SKF offers high precision, preload-ed spherical roller bearings for printingcylinder applications. These bearingsare identified by the designation suf-fixes VA751, VA759 and VAB.

Besides this special range there isanother earlier range of special bear-ings for printing cylinders identified by six-figure drawing numbers (e.g.453538). They are still used in severalmarkets.

SKF Explorer – new performanceclass for spherical roller bearingsDevelopments in material and heattreatment, manufacturing process andbearing design have resulted in a newspherical roller bearing, known asExplorer. The new Explorer sphericalroller bearings outlast all other spher-ical roller bearings, including the pre-vious SKF bearings. To pass on thebenefits of the several times longer lifeto users, the calculation methods forlife prediction have been modified. For more information about theExplorer spherical roller bearings, see SKF publication 4401.

SKF has developed the Channel concept infactories all over the world. This drasticallyreduces the lead time from raw material toend product as well as work in progress and finished goods in stock. The conceptenables faster and smoother informationflow, eliminates bottlenecks and bypassesunnecessary steps in production. TheChannel team members have the know-ledge and commitment needed to share theresponsibility for fulfilling objectives in areassuch as quality, delivery time, productionflow etc.

The SKF Group is the first major bearingmanufacturer to have been granted approvalaccording to ISO 14001, the internationalstandard for environmental managementsystems. The certificate is the most com-prehensive of its kind and covers more than60 SKF production units in 17 countries. The SKF Engineering & Research Centre

is situated just outside Utrecht in TheNetherlands. In an area of 17 000 squaremetres (185 000 sq.ft) some 150 scientists, engineers and support staff are engaged inthe further improvement of bearing peform-ance. They are developing technologiesaimed at achieving better materials, betterdesigns, better lubricants and better seals – together leading to an even better under-standing of the operation of a bearing in itsapplication. This is also where the SKF LifeTheory was evolved, enabling the design of bearings which are even more compact and offer even longer operational life.

SKF manufactures ball bearings, roller bearings and plain bearings. The smallestare just a few millimetres (a fraction of aninch) in diameter, the largest several metres.SKF also manufactures bearing and oilseals which prevent dirt from entering and lubricant from leaking out. SKF’s subsidiaries CR and RFT S.p.A. are amongthe world’s largest producers of seals.
